Description Feels like it's been an incredibly long time since I uploaded anything personal. This is one of my favourite pieces as of late, done for my 2nd book and exhibition. Hope you enjoy. <3

Photography/Direction: Zhang Jingna
Makeup/Hair: Andrea Claire
Model: Margaret White

PS: The flowers are real~ and I really tried to do a cropped version for safe viewing, but it just doesn't really work. So sorry ;_;

The beauty of this photo is not in it's bold reds, its strong blacks nor is it in her tremendous facial beauty. To me it is in the ends of her soft lashes, the slight hint of her tassel formed nipples and her subtle hunch. I couldn't care less about anything else. Yet, it's nothing without the elements put into it. The colours are very Asian in a setting that seems cold. The image is personally to clean for my taste but goes to show the incredible lines that it has. Melancholic but I'd like to see the model try a sadistic smile.

The cropping works but is a bit straightforward, I think she could have benefitted a lot from more space. Give her wonderful hair the room it deserves!

I think the hair needs more attention generally, because it's the most original part of the photo for me. The colour of the flowers goes great with the background and her makeup; but a variety of colours (maybe a bit of yellow) would give the photo a focus. At the moment there's no focal point. If you had chosen either her face or hair as the focus, then it'd be a stronger portrait, IMHO.

The lovely subtle highlights on her hair are rather lost next to the strong white of her skin, which is a shame. But generally the lighting is fantastic. I love the cool shadows on her neck.

It's good that you didn't crop her breasts off; I really like the strong lines of her arms, chest and back and how they contrast with the curves of her face and hair.

a fascinating piece to say the least....i feel that there is really a lot going on here:

technically -

i'm not really much of a photographer so i won't say anything with regards to the actual photo quality, but as a picture, you have done very well in terms of composition, color choice, shape and form...in many ways this is a piece that studies contrasts, the black of her hair with the paleness of her skin; the luxuriant quality that exists in the abundance of her hair and the flowers therein vs. the hair's careful styling and perfect, constrained shaping

conceptually -

but perhaps i find most interest in this piece thought the subtle conceptual qualities it possess...back to the idea of contrasts, the subject is obviously lovely to look at, but her slightly odd expression makes it appear that she is troubled or somehow distraught, maybe even just plain disinterested....i am also interested in how the elaborate mass of her coifed hair forces her neck forward, making her appear slightly uncomfortable and as if she is looking towards something far off...her body is here in this realm, but her mind appears to be elsewhere....she is oblivious to the viewer, instead caught up in something else...

I have been an admirer of your work since I first joined DA over a year ago, and each new deviation never fails to inspire or impress. This deviation, and the rest of your portfolio for that matter, testify to your creative talent and technique.

The most ornate and exotic component of this portrait is undoubtedly the gorgeous ebony hair and wine colored flowers. Another beautiful feature is the flawless and luminescent skin of the model. I can name a variety of additional features that I admire, but what I really love about this portrait is that it is a study of contrasts.

This deviation makes a striking impression for a variety of reasons, the strongest being your choices in color and your work with the model in regards to makeup, posture etc.

The cool slate colored background creates a striking contrast against the model's skin. While it highlights the model it also conveys a certain mood. Another reviewer mentioned melancholy and that is the perfect word for it. It befits the sadness and detachment that the model's face shows.

Her elaborate hair juxtaposed to the downtrodden posture is also jarring. Usually someone who has such a regal hairstyle would be expected to have a regal attitude- shoulders back, eyes focused...confidence should be radiating out of her pores. But instead she seems to have all the world's troubles on her bare shoulders.

The fact that she is nude also lends itself to the idea that whatever is bothering her, she feels that she has been stripped to her very core- her face, hunched shoulders....all of it points to her being crushed under the weight of something. It reminds me of something that I was told as a child- no matter how beautiful someone is, if there is something preying on their mind, it will show. Be it lack of confidence or losing faith in life, her oppression is clearly present and is exaggerated when compared to the beautiful make up and hair.

You mention that you had considered cropping this photo to make it for "safe viewing". It is only my opinion but I believe that doing so would have detracted from the deviation. It would have become a photo focusing more on an elaborate hairstyle than a portrait study of this beautiful model.

Overall an outstanding portrait, deserving of all the praise it has garnered thus far and more.

Nothing to say. Model, make up, hair, all is perfect.
Why can we ask more?
The magerness from the model with the volume of the hair is a great contrast.
The red color: wonderful on this black hair. Make up just enough.
Profile of model: perfect.

AN INCREDIBLE WORK

You can make one million so this.

Do you work for some magazine ? What's surly: you've a true talent.

Aspecting yet more from you, I wish you many succes.

Friendly A. Gernak

P.S.: maybe shall I use the model. I make a link to you in this case.

The color of red that you chose for the hair is beautifully lush!
It looks like there are braids in the hair as well as the wrap around, however I can hardly see them. May be more visible when the photo is larger. I think by not being able to see them, it looks a bit off with the rest of the hair being smooth.

While the eyes are drawn right to the hair, I really love the make up. The mix of red and black eyeshadow is just wonderful!!
I like that the eyeshadow doesn't fill up the whole lid going to the brows.
Again, focus is the hair, but my favorite part of this photo is the beautiful work on the eyes. Great Job!

I have to admit that after I noticed the model's hair in this peice, my eye immediately went to the strange shape of her nipples which are cast in the shadows. She is beautifully made up with her elaboriate hairstyle and perfect makeup, but yet her body is bare and her posture suggests that maybe she is feeling insecure or sad. Maybe it can symbolize a sort of beautiful melancholy, or simply that outward appearance isn't anything. Despite whatever meaning might be behind this photo, it is executed perfectly and looks like a very high-fashion shot. I would expect to see this in any editorial in a magazine like Elle or Vogue. It's another lovely shot from a gifted photographer e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)" />

Omg, thats all i can say. You know i'm a big fan of your works but this really took my breathe away. First of all, the skin color of the model fits perfectly to the background, the red contrast in her hais is a real eyecatcher. Well done. The expression of the model is really confusing i mean, the expression is really kinda different from your usually works, in my opinion that makes the picture really unique. I love how you always care of the details of the lighting because it is totally stunning perfect. i Would change nothing. I think a great other Idea would be the model look more into the camera and lay her head on her shoulder , dunno just an idea. sorry for my horrable english , i hope you understand most of that e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a… " width="19" height="19" alt="" title="Sweating a little..." /> can't wait for more
