I don't usually write up critiques, but I guess since I'm procrastinating from my own image-making...
It is photography from Zemotion; how do you critique someone who is already held in such high regard? I suppose I shall approach the critique from a more analytic approach so that others can better appreciate the nuances in the photograph.
At first glance it is easy to think that composition is a simple head portrait, but that is not the case. Being the pro that she is, Zemotion has already established a good division in lights, midtones, and darks within the image, using the costuming and accessories, as well as her final cropping of the image. The other particular instance of art directive decision-making in the image that really made me "geek out" artistically was the choice in contrasting the black clothing with the gold accessories, and yet none of the accessories are so intense in value that they compete with the emphasis of this photograph, which is the face of the model. It is also worth noting that in addition to the primary value groupings from top to bottom, there is also a secondary set of value groupings as a result of the very soft short loop lighting and the directional breeze
What I feel really brings the whole image together was the choice in color grading. The slightly gray/green color grading across the whole image helps to both liven the dark clothing and hair, while at the same time subdue the highly reflective jewelry. The model herself, at the center of all of this with her almost-smile, leaves a very stoic impression upon me, especially combined with the color grading. Yet there are hints of warmth in her face that bring a refreshing temperature contrast in the midst of all the gray coolness.
TL;DR: good composition, value contrast, choice in color grading, color temperature contrast. good support from the model, accessory maker, and backdrop maker.
Well, now I'm done typing this up, I guess I should probably go back to working on my own art.
PS. I just noticed that the jewelry and accessories match the models eyes. I'm not sure if it was intended, (of course you should always answer that it was intentional if anyone actually asks), but this color matching works really well.
