To me, it doesn't get better than Fritz Lang. (Metropolis, Die Nibulungen, "M"). Good stuff!

hey years ago I watched die nibelungen in a movie theatre with a guy playing the piano live.. amazing! (gance, dreyer, murnau, germi, fellini, leone, argento, kubrick...)

Yes yes yes! All wonderful, especially Dreyer. Have you seen Vampyre? It's a short 70 minute supernatural film by Dreyer. Very good.
And of course Kubrick, there's nothing that I can say that hasn't already been said. A genius.
