I'm apparently incapable of coloring the same way twice. I decided to be stupid and see if I could color an entire picture without the quick selection tool or the magic wand. Don't ask how many layers there are; I lost count after 8. @_@

Well it wasn't five hours STRAIGHT; I can guarantee that. It would divided up over two days I think.
I really can't recall the longest I've ever worked on something. I don't bother to time it but I"m sure my first ones took a lot longer since I had no clue what I was doing.

I was a bit confused because I didn't know how much I could do and which tools did what. But it was fun to play around and learn.

Ah yes, the white space...I wonder when somebody would say something...That's a speech bubble. This is actually a panel from a mini-doujin/comic that was found on the artist's webpage. Maybe I shouldn't have erased the japanese text...

Well, I did something very odd and time consuming this time around. Basically, anytime I wanted to add a color, I made a new layer and then used an EXTREMELY light opacity with the airbrush for the area in question. I went back with the eraser for the highlights and to clean up in various places. Then several trillion layers later, I added a shadow layer where I just darkened in some areas with a low opacity brown.
Normally I use the quick selection tool but I didn't think that'd work too well for something that isn't inked. So I just didn't use it and practically raped the eraser tool.
Hope that explained it? I practically regurgitated everything.

There's another style that I know of and haven't tried it very much, but somebody I know uses it:
This is if you inked the lineart. You hold down the shift key and select the lineart until you have all the lines you want to KEEP. You then hit "select" on the toolbar and then hit "inverse". Now take the eraser and go over the entire thing so you won't have any of the smudges or unnecessary lines you don't want. Deselect it and then you can go through and use the fill bucket to color in certain areas. Then you can add a layer of shading later. It's a lot simpler style, a lot cleaner, and a lot FASTER.
Just tossin different ideas out there.

Ah, you only have a trial? Well you could get Photoshop Elements. It's not as souped up as Photoshop CS3 but it's what I use and just as good. And it's NOT 200 dollars or however much the full version of Photoshop is these days.
