Looking at this one really gives a handle on what this painting is all about. I have to say that at first I was more in favor of the ink work, but after some rumination, I am coming to see the mastery and wonder in this one. Having those touches of red in the strange coral that follow through in the figure and another little area on the right is an excellent device for subtle movement. Also, the way you color this is so subtle, it glows and is quite balanced and wonderfully minimal. I can comfortably say this is a masterwork. The way you've arranged the clouds makes the sky appear to be cupping the figure. At first I was not into the water scene on the right side, but it does indeed add more excitement, invitation, and depth to the piece. It retains its sense of inviting mystery, of a story well told with a solid, yet tantalizingly invisible back story. The little details you have put in, like the utility belt of the figure, are very cool. This glows with light and life overall. And the coloring is, for my personal tastes in lightness, quite pleasing. This is one of your most overall accomplished works, if not your best. Congratulations!

rad. i am glad you warmed up to it. your choosing color over black and white?! that's awesome. and of course the words "masterwork" and "if not your best" make me feel pretty damn good too. this picture has many layers of symbolic meaning. some only have meaning to me and possibly a few people that are really close to me. it was very crucial that people liked it. i am not sure how i would have responded otherwise.

for a few minutes after i finished the colored version, i had a sick feeling in my gut because i thought that i had blown it.

i now overall like it. the sky bugs me a little which is why i did the digital version (although some of what bugs me is the look of the warbled paper. typically i paint with little water. not only am i new to washes, but they use a lot more water causing bumpy paper. i don't like that look. i like clean. my scanner doesn't like it either and it doesn't scan evenly). anyway, i knew from the very beginning that i wasn't going to be able to achieve the sky that i saw in my mind's eye. the digital one doesn't capture it either, although it is in some ways closer.

of course there are other things i wish i had done differently. many of the areas i don't like were done in moments where i forced myself to draw. i would sometimes make hasty decisions that i didn't think through and didn't end up panning out. i think that probably happens to a lot of artists that do time consuming work, although i am not sure.

i am glad that you are tempted by an unknown story. i still haven't decided whether or not this will be in my graphic novel or not. if it is, the temptation will still be there, because i think that this character is only talked about second hand. hopefully there will be a lot of images that are complimentary in that way.
