Tesia's POV:

After finishing the visit with Maria the tears just would not stop. I don't know if I was angry, sad, or furious, so many emotions were combined and the worst of all was that I had to walk without being able to wipe the tears because my hands were attached to the damn waist chain and I could not really get them to my face. The best I could do was trying to wipe my tears with my shoulder awkwardly.

Finally, we were back to the preparation room where they took all the restraints off me and I was able to try to wipe the tears off, but even then they would not stop. Ger was the first one that saw me when I entered the cell block and I felt she wanted to talk to me, but I just ignore her and went back to my cell.

I thought I was finally getting used to this place, but a brief reminder of how I was so fucked up by Maria is enough to send me into this spiral of dark thoughts again.

"I just want to go home" I cried while hugging my knees in my dark cell for what felt like hours.

I heard a brief knock at the door

"Tesia, you awake?"

It was Ryhardia

"Ger told me that you came back crying from your visit and I wanted to check up on you, what is going on child?"

"I don't want to talk about it," I said trying to make her go away, I just wanted to be alone to deal with this.

"That's fine too"

Then Rihg just sat next to me and put one of her hands on my back rubbing it, trying to comfort me.

After a couple of minutes.

"I just want to go back home, I want to be with my parents, I want to complain about stupid stuff instead of how much my body hurts at the end of the day from working all day long, why is this happening to me Rihg?"

Then I proceeded to tell her what Maria told me on the visit. How she lied as a key witness and what her excuse had been for it, how I didn't know what to make about her excuse and I just poured everything out. Poor Rihg just stayed there listening to me complain and rant about everything in the last six months without saying a word, just nodding to make sure that I knew she was listening to me. After a while my tears subsided and I was able to calm myself down slightly where I wasn't sobbing every couple of seconds.

" Thanks for trusting me and sharing Tesia, but I guess it's time that we have the talk regarding some truths about this place," she said changing her tone to a more serious one.

"What do you mean?" I said

"Well I bet you are pretty smart and have started to notice certain patterns in how many younger girls come here claiming they are innocent and how they were set up, most of the time you would dismiss them, but in here not so much. When you live as long as I have you hear and see things, and you start making deductions about these patterns.

I calmed myself down so that I could put more attention to what Rihg was telling me since her serious tone took me off from my stupor.

" You start noticing first of all that the population of inmates is always pretty stable never too high or never too low just right to get the resources that we need, you start noticing that when there is a decrease of delver type essencers that suddenly we get an influx of solar, flame and soil essencers. For example, we know that most elvenoids have a tendency to have forest or soil essences so when those are lacking we get a bunch of them suddenly pouring in and then productivity increases immediately. It is never at a continuous rhythm, but maybe every 5 years or so a bunch of them suddenly come. There are a variety of essencers in here, but you will see that 80% of them are more apt to do mining work than others"

Rihg started to paint a picture that I didn't want to believe with her words, if what she is saying is true then that means that the reason I am here is bigger than Maria just lying, I felt that there were plenty of inconsistencies with my case too. At the scene of the crime, they should have at least tested Maria's blood for drugs and that should have been plenty of proof and now that I think about it no one brought that up in my case.

" You are not the only one in here that has had a key witness threatened with something and caused their whole case to spiral out of control in combination with some evidence tampering. Plus the Accords by themselves are unjust towards us. Why is it that if someone mugs a person with a gun they get 5 years but if you use essence you can get up to 10 years? I bet the black suit guy that the girl spoke about is part of the RCAE and they are using their power to send essence users here for working in the mines, we are not inmates Tesia, we are a cheap and expendable labor force that they fear. Though I am not sure why they would send a water essence user here, your ability is only useful in Niche circumstances like the crew I am trying to build so if it means something I appreciate you, thanks to you some of our crew might actually make it to the end of their sentence since they might not burn out from excessive essence use".

If what Rihg was telling me was true then..

"Then what you are saying is that I am mostly here because I am an essence user? Why? So that I can make some rich person more money by spending my life? Damnation to all of this, may the fiend eat them all. I wish I was never born with essence powers, I wish the Deity just take away her curse then.

Rihg looked at me with serious eyes for the first time in our conversation.

"Tesia, do not say that, I don't know what the morons 500 years ago were doing by using their essences the way they did, but our powers are a gift from the Deity to show her love. It is something that helped Aliztheans for millennia to fight essence monsters and be able to establish themselves in this dangerous world. Before the accords essence users were celebrated in every family that they were born, but as often is the case the nail that stands out is the first one that gets hammered down. I know that it doesn't seem like that right now but love yourself and love every inch of what makes you unique that includes your essence abilities. They already took away the freedom of your body, do not let them take away the freedom of your spirit. If you allow that to happen you will allow them to own you completely like I have seen it happen to many girls in here"

The words Rihg said lifted slightly some of the weight that I had been experiencing earlier and the sadness that I was feeling started to fill up with a darker emotion that I had a glimpse of briefly when I heard Maria and her excuses. Was it anger, rage, or hatred? My mind is just a mess, but I was curious about one thing since what Rihg said sounded personal then I asked

"Rihg thank you for sharing this, but I am curious, all that you said sounds personal, can I ask how did you get here? You don't have to share if you don't want to".

"Oh, girl that's no problem at all I am actually glad that you are starting to show some interest in the people around you, until now you were still dealing with the numbness of being here. It is personal because of all the girls and friends I have seen sent here with unjust means If you ask around you will probably find out anyways. It is personal because of all the friends that I have seen sent here through unjust means, but I am actually one of the people that really deserve to be here. Around 20 years ago these two flops came to my town and raped my daughter who was just 16 at the time. The next day I found the idiots and burned their balls off with my essence. I didn't want to do that at the beginning, just capture them, but at the moment I didn't have 1/3 of the control over my powers that I have right now. They passed away a couple of hours later and well the rest is history. I do not regret what I did, my daughter was able to get rid of her trauma and marry an excellent young man with which she has two boys, so that gives me a little bit of hope about the future".

With that said I wondered how being in the hands of someone that society deems as the worst of the worst I felt the safest I felt in months. A little bit later I just fell asleep.
