ZeroDevil — Storm Diving

Description A little concept I came up with recently. It's an extreme sport of sorts in which skydivers wear special wing suits that are reinforced with Steel, Titanium, and Kevlar. These suits have extended wings and tails which fold up on the ground, and allow for superb glide ratios.

The main purpose of these suits; simple: skydiving into the most extreme weather out there including, but not limited to, thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and waterspouts.

Launching from a plane is too dangerous unless the plane is at high altitude. As a result, most storm divers have developed another way to get airborne if they cannot do so from a standing start; a launcher of sorts that works like the catapult on an aircraft carrier. This launcher propels them forward and into the air. The launchers are steam-driven and can be mounted on stationary platforms, on vehicles, and on buildings.

Needless to say, this is a dangerous concept (but I might use it in a storyline). This drawing you see here is of one kind of these wing suits, this kind in particular is designed for twister-diving, or diving into a low-scale tornado. It has steel bracing implanted into the torso of the suit, and the main suit itself is covered in a light-weight version of Kevlar fabric.

These suits fit members of both genders (male and female) and are form-fitting for aerodynamics.

This pilot right here is a new character of mine. She's a female pilot whose name is Kaylee, although she goes by Cardinal when going out flying (due to the bright red color of her suit). She assumes her "Cardinal" moniker when flying because she keeps her dangerous hobby a secret from her parents, who would be worried to death if they found out that their daughter went twister storm diving at every opportunity.

A bit more info about her:

The fastest tornado she's ever been in was an F2 with a 130 MPH wind speed (this was also the dive she came closest to crashing on).

Her first dive was in clear weather for the sake of testing out her new wing suit.

She was originally scared to death of tornadoes, but decided that the only way to get over this fear was to face the storms head-on.

The first tornado she dived into was an F0 which barely qualified as a true tornado (and was technically a large dust devil).

She usually dives into F1 tornadoes with a wind speed of around 80 to 90 MPH.

She desperately wants to test out a new kind of suit that's out there, but doesn't have the money to purchase it yet.

Her ultimate desire is to fly into a strong F3 tornado with a wind speed of at least 200 MPH (although later on in her storyline, she ends up going head to head with a monster-sized F5 with a 310 MPH wind speed and a 15 mile base).

Would this actually work? O.O

Maybe, if it was strong enough of a suit.

THAT WOULD BE SO COOL.

i like the "tail" bit at the back of the wing.

It certainly seems like a big step up from thereal life suits people sky dive in today.

i can't wait to see the story line written.

I don't know if I'll write it or not, but I might.

Thanks though. ^^

Awesome. This is an extreme sport that I could get in to

The OC of mine which I share my screen-name with has a symilar armour system. I'm still working on a way for the wings to retract to a more managable size for when she's grounded.

The wings are also supposed to be sturdy enough for combat but...well...I gotta keep working on it. Maybe I'll scan my reference sketches or something...I have to restart my final that I was going to use for my ID...

Interesting concept for your character. Perhaps the wings could be semi-elastic and could stretch to fit their positions when on the ground and in the air.

The thing is I've designed them like bird wings with overlapping metal feathers. It fits the retraction sort of (each layer folding back under the previous one), but the problem is making them big enough for flight, manageably retractable AND sturdy enough to attack with.
I just need to get back to drawing it. It should fix itself in the process...
