Description So last week I went and saw Frost/Nixon, and can finally say "I actually enjoyed a film directed by Ron Howard".

That being said, I wanted to have an illustration to the movie review I wrote (but have not posted yet) on zeruch.net , so I decided to make one.

I think the idea of using journal/blog posts as a way to test your illustration skills is useful. It makes you have to come up with -hopefully- a compelling or useful idea, and then produce it into a presentable manner.

This was done using a reference image, run through several times under a lightbox; each pass using a different set of media (pencil + acrylic paint, brush pen, weird Japanese alcohol-based ink markers, etc), then processed together digitally.

For those old enough to understand the quote, bravo. For the rest:

Nixon eventually got the rather unsavory nickname of "Tricky Dick"
Run-DMC is a rap group that had a great track for its day called "It's Tricky" with a video featuring a then up-and-coming Penn & Teller: [link]

The lines and icy colours around his eyes are just awesome.

To rock a rhyme that's right on time...

I really love the colours here. There's something compelling about that flick of red that connects the speech bubble to Nixon. Very nice.

i saw a thing on pbs the other day about a rock group. Penn talks about how he bought the masters for their entire catalog for $500 after getting the lead man drunk.

Stuff like that makes me sad.

this is a great pic though.

You didn't like Willow?

A lot of movies this past month or two are getting a lot of praise... the only movie of the bunch that I saw, Benjamin Button, had the feel of a great movie and great acting... but lacked a story with any kind of meaning, action, drama, suspense or surprise... so it sucked.

Great image... I like the density of Nixon's head compared to the surroundings. The air bubble is also clever.

It's not that I didn't like Willow, but it is far from great cinema. It's a good bit of entertainment for its day.

It was good enough. I wrote a small review on my blog, but ultimately it was a decent film that took the right liberties to make it engaging.

I am pretty tough on political movies in general, and it passed on Frank Langella's performance alone.
