Description Finest Hour - Card Number 73: Contagion Contraption

As the flames slowly dissipated, the charred shell of the metal pony remained standing for a few seconds, before it collapsed in a pile of scrap, releasing a cloud of dark, green gas from its hull.

“Hold your breath and run. No final analysis of gas, but most likely contains hazardous materials!”

They did as the doctor told them; running away as fast as they could from the spreading cloud of gas. With a mighty flap of her wings, Fluttershy sent the cloud after the group, billowing forth like a wave of death.

“Not fast enough, damn these old bones. All of you, keep running!”

Starswirl turned around and began to weave a spell.

“Starswirl, what are you…”

“Run, get away. I can buy you some time.”

Intending to block the spreading cloud of gas, Starswirl conjured forth a wall of force in front of him, filling the air with a barely visible barrier of energy, big enough to hold the gas back.

“Impressive. You are as powerful as I remember. But that, of course, does not mean powerful enough!”

“Remember? What do you…”

As Starswirl looked confused at the laughing Fluttershy, he saw to his horror something he had never seen magic do before, and with his considerable expertise on the area, that is saying a lot. The barrier he had made began to turn black, cracking like splintering glass, as gas began to seep though.

“What evil is this? Corrupting… magic?”

“Indeed! When we first met, I was alone. But now, I have others to help me. Others, with powers far beyond your imagination. Want to se it firsthoof? Specter, show him!”

Specter, the twisted image of Luna, which had been standing guard next to Fluttershy, began to move unnaturally fast, almost a blur, before crashing through the barrier in front of Starswirl, with its scythe raised high. With shards of shattered barrier flying around him, and a jet of gas pushed though the hole in the barrier, all Starswirl could do in defense was to stagger backwards in shock, as Specter swung the heavy scythe at him.
The others, blinded by the jet of gas that had caught up with them in no time, could do little to stop the seeming inevitable.

Next piece of the story

(Stupid joke warning: A line I originally intended to use for Starswirl for this part was "You shall not gas!" but it was vetoed by my bad-joke-detector)

Angry smiley face? Anyway I think I figured it out. You're gonna use Ral Zarek! The Izzet planeswalker ignored by many but still extremely badass!

The mark on its flank, if that's what you are asking about.

To be honest, I dont actually know a lot about Ral Zarek, I dont have any of the novels, nor did I play during the original Ravnica set. But could be interesting to read a bit about him, since he will most likely appear in Gatecrash or Dragon's Maze.

He is, however, not planned to appear in this set. For the moment, at least.

All we know about Ral is that he is from Ravnica, former Izzet guildmage and a couple of pics. But the Izzet part immediately gives away his personality .

WOW!
I like this one.
This is the kind of creature I most like (spells with legs).

This is pretty... simple for a rare.
What about increasing the cost to [2BB] and giving it the corruption ability?

Or make it cost [BBB] and be a 3/2.

I don't know. Just make it feel more like a rare.

I used Solemn Simulacrum as a "template" for this card, but I can see what you mean about being simple. I'll see if I can make it a bit more interesting.

Updated with a changed mana cost, and having corruption 1, so that it is a bit more focused on black, but also somewhat useable for combat.
Another idea I had was giving it Evoke for 3BB, allowing it to be used entirely as a sorcery.

Evoke is not a core set mechanic.
Which means that if you give evoke to one card in your set, you have to give evoke to more cards.
