Well..... I can get a replica for around $350... or a real one for about $700!
I got a real hyena skin (saved it from the dumpster) and now I'm getting it tanned. I hope it comes out ok! Maybe he'd make a cool taxidermy mount or rug!

No, it's a hair-on piece of skin. About 1.5"x6" long.
Came from an older hyena arm I had.

A client wanted a rug made, and it was excess that was trimmed off. I also find paws, claws, hooves, faces and things in the scrap bins that I save.
Don't worry, they are all legal parts that came in from Africa from guided hunts. They were all passed by the USFW, and that's the only way I can get them.

looks like they have really strong jaws. colieo. oh hey, do you have a pic of a wolf skull? i have this skull i found...it really looks like one-i think-but i found it right here in kansas like...last year. so...i dunno. i suppose it could be plausiable. or it could just be a german shepard or something. i just know it doesnt look like any of my coyote skulls.

Zhon In reply to awsmdragonqueen [2006-10-02 01:34:34 +0000 UTC]

I don't have any pics of a wolf skull, but try typing "wolf" in the SkullsUnlimited.com search!
Chances are you might have gotten a coydog (I got a pelt from one and everyone thought I shot Fido...)! Half coyote, half dog (unless it's a full dog that got lost).
Post up a pic for us all to see!!!!

ooo your wise. (i shoulda thought of that...) lol, thanx. i'll see if i cant get pictures up. i just dont have a digital camera so...easier said than done. i think it may just be a dog skull...way too big for a coyot. and i doubt id just find a wolf skull laying around here in the middle of kansas...*shrug* but thanx!!!

Hey dude!
I've been out looking for quail and dove, but I can't find any where it's legal to shoot them, lol.... I did shoot a good size cottontail rabbit and I threw it in the freezer incase you'd like it with your birds once I get some. Let me know. There are tons of bunnies out here! If you don't want it I'll probably skin it and freeze the skin and skull for later. It's a really pretty rabbit though. Let me know!

Zhon In reply to BornToBrewUpStorms [2006-09-25 03:12:34 +0000 UTC]

Hahah, yeah, birds are hard sometimes. The quails and doves don't really travel in fleets too much.
Sure! I'd like a bunny skin! YOu can have the skull and bones for your beetles! If you can skin it for taxidermy and have everything still attached to the skin, and salt dry it, that'd be great!
Thanks a bunch!!!

BornToBrewUpStorms In reply to Zhon [2006-09-26 00:56:04 +0000 UTC]

The only things I've skinned for taxidermy have been squirrels and deer.... and even then, I didn't salt them right. I was just guessing with the salt and such... if you can link me to a detailed way to salt and dry pelts for taxidermy, I can skin it for you. Do I leave the feet in? Do I have to turn the ears? That will be really hard on a rabbit, but I do need practice. Let me know.

Zhon In reply to BornToBrewUpStorms [2006-09-26 01:56:31 +0000 UTC]

Rabbits aren't really so different than a squirrel (other than the fur goes everywhere! Lol!) All you basically do is skin them out, remove all major chunks of meat, you can cut the feet to the toe joints (small things are a big hassle to go all the way to the calw bones). Then once everything is skinned out, spread non0iodized salt on the flesh side, getting it in all the corners and folds. The salt will kill the bacteria and set the fur so it doesn't fall out. And lay it out, flesh side up to dry.
It may be possible to re-salt it the next day to pull more water out of the skin.
That's basically how it's done. Then the skin is ready to be tanned!!!!

Don't worry, I trust ya!
Speaking of which.... what', I going to owe ya? Skullz? Fuzz?

BornToBrewUpStorms In reply to Zhon [2006-09-27 01:13:56 +0000 UTC]

I did my squirrels by cutting up the back instead of down the belly.... which do you prefer? And do you want me to set it in the sun once it's salted? I've done both (sun and inside salting).

Zhon In reply to BornToBrewUpStorms [2006-09-27 02:14:13 +0000 UTC]

You can skin him either way you'd like. Whatever is more comfortable to you.
You can go ahead and sun dry it too! That's not a bad idea!

And again..... whadda I owe ya?
xD

Woah. Those are some chunky teeth 8o. Quite different from a canine's :0

The whole.. hyena family is weird. They're actually closer related to weasels than dogs (or so I heard.. somewhere).
And aardwolves (cousin, same family) have 5 toes on their front tooths. Funkyyyy~

akireru In reply to akireru [2006-09-15 21:25:07 +0000 UTC]

um.. brain fart here?
That was supposed to be "feet" not "tooths"
Must've been I was just thinking about teeth, and tooth-foot. They sound similar. >o
Okay, not really xD; But still.

Zhon In reply to akireru [2006-09-15 23:02:33 +0000 UTC]

Yep! I do that occassionally too!
xD
But yeah! They're really weird animals in general! I knever knew that they had so much jaw powerz!

xD 5 toes on their tooths.... that would be the epitomy of freaks! Foot-In-Mouth Disorder! Lol!

Because hyenas are so freaky!
That and their teef are extremely thick! Meant for cracking into the bone marrow of Giraffes!
That and my friend told me that they are born without gender, or with both until they get old enough to serve a purpose in a pack.
Weird......

darkzel In reply to Zhon [2006-09-23 20:22:02 +0000 UTC]

Actaully, its the gender thing;
Its becasue females are at the top of hyena socety, and msut be bigger nd stronger than males so....
They have peenors.
It is true; female hyena have peens, compelate with (nonfunctioning)testes. Weirder still, they must coputlate and give birth through them, wich is why hyena mothers often die during thier first litters. Not only that, but due to all of that testoserone, hyena pups are meeeeeen. They are pretty much born fighting one another, and the stronger pup usualyl kills the waeker one(s).
.....
This just shows that I have waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much free time.
