Description My personal flock...or "murder" of crows

I made these....they are NOT for sale.

Crows are legal to own, BUT illegal to buy and sell. The only way you can get one is to know a generous hunter/ person to "gift" you one.

Ravens are downright illegal. Owning one of those would be $5000 fine or 2 years in jail.

I would love to have one if you are willing, as crows are my totem/spirit animal!

yikes. Why are they illegal, do you know?

Zhon In reply to awsmdragonqueen [2011-02-04 03:33:28 +0000 UTC]

Protected under the Migratory Bird Act...along with most all songbirds and birds of prey. (technically a crow is classified as a songbird)

Why are they legal to own, but illegal to buy and sell? That sounds kind of silly. xD

Zhon In reply to CinderFox73095 [2011-01-26 04:19:43 +0000 UTC]

It is silly...the government has weird laws. But they are protected under the Migratory Bird Act, which prohibits the sale of such birds/parts. But...legal to own since they have a hunting season.

Haha awesome ^^ what do the tops look like, you know where the string would join the body? I@m very new to bird taxidermy not done one yet XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to fossilizedmouse [2011-01-26 04:20:15 +0000 UTC]

The string is connected to an eye-screw which screws into the back at the point of balance.

Does it show badly, or...?

Zhon In reply to fossilizedmouse [2011-01-27 04:25:56 +0000 UTC]

No, usually the feathers will conform around the thread and screw-eye.

I was walking through a local park once. and there was a murder of crows all picking at a dead squirrel. I looked up and in every single tree surrounding the crows there were dozens of squirrels watching them eat there dead companion.

It was earie. I was just waiting for the call to go up and the squirrels to rush on the crows.

any way story time aside. Great work I wish there was more contrast to see the crows in more detail

Crows aren't illegal, just illegal to buy and sell because they are under the Migratory Bird Act, but they aren't Federally protected like Ravens. If the bird has a hunting season, they are legal to own.

And I do believe in many cases, rules on ownership and selling change if you are registered as a First Nations individual (meaning once my boyfriend gets off his butt and actually registers as a Lakota - nevermind he's been part of the culture and went through the medicine trials and all that YEARS ago - there may be some odd collections in our house since we won't get beaned for picking fun stuff up outta the yard).

Zhon In reply to Lyrak [2011-01-26 04:23:15 +0000 UTC]

This is true....I hear it takes 5 years to get registered and you must either be 1/8th or 1/16th Indian to gain such rights.

Lyrak In reply to Zhon [2011-01-26 12:28:24 +0000 UTC]

By boyfriend is 1/4 - and I don't actually think it takes that long. Maybe if you're low content like I am (I am *supposedly* 1/16 but gawd I don't want to get the full geneology listing from my aunt who did the research... can't stand her), but I didn't think it took that long if it was easy enough to prove. And considering he's got plenty of family with native blood, and can trace himself back to Sitting Bull, I don't think it'd be difficult...

I was told my easiest bet if *I* wanted to register would be to register with the Seminoles, since according to that aunt the tribe in my family history is considered extinct now. Ugh maaaaaan I'm gonna have to see her again if I want to get the info. UGH.

I always liked that term for a number of crows - "murder."

I kindof wonder how the group got called a "murder".... I find it hilarious that it's called an "administration" of turkeys!

They are fun! And if they come out crappy, it's okay! They look kindof messy anyways.
Perhaps I'll get a tutorial. I have a friend who's giving me 6 more crows.

Cool! A tutorial on a crow mount would be awesome. I have a friend who hunts them (there's a crow season in his state). Too bad I had to move, I was so excited to try it .

Ravens arent as common in the USA and Federally Protected under the same law that protects birds of prey.

Ravens are much more rare here in the UK, you can;t go out and kill one, but its fine to own a dead one
