Description Interesting skull of the Northern Sea Griffin (also spelled Gryphon or Gryffin), also known as the Common Sea Griffin.

Let me tell you the adventurous story!

I went to Scotland in search for the elusive Loch Ness monster, and after many failures, I decided to have a bit of an adventure scoping out the rest of the country. I hired a Scotsman by the name of Neill Hawley, and he was my guide through the wilderness that the land had.

On my trip along the coasts of Stonehaven, I tripped along some large rocks and accidentally fell into a nest. A rather large nest at that! And soon, I came face to face with it's owner. A female griffin. Granted she was no bigger than a small mountain lion, she came equipped with razor sharp talons and a beak that seemed to be made of blackened steel! She was in a blind fury that I had landed near her two black flecked, ivory eggs... and began her defensive, motherly attack.

Gladly, Neil was there and prepared. Armed with his crossbow, he had to act fast, and put her assault to an end with two bolts. Unfortunately, one bolt had passed through her head, shattering her bottom jaw...

Sad to see this magnificent animal go to waste, she became our lunch... well.... more like supper.... Lupper?
Imagine the mixed taste of turkey and a sweet porky/beefy flavour. Prepared with a nice blend of wild herbs and spices, along with a few berries to add variety. Very tasty!

Neill was nice enough to give me the skull while he took the pelt (after which his clan presented him with a feast in his honour, and he became known as a supreme hunter... It's gotta be a guy thing...).
The two eggs that I fortuantely didn't crush went to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, where they will be taken care of and hatched under official care.

So the skull passed through US customs and is now posted for everyone to see!
Enjoy!!!

Lol! Yay! I try to make things look as good as I can (unfortunately I made this one just a little too smooth for me to believe)

yeah, when I looked at it I thought that where the bone met the un-real bone it looked a little off but figured the edges may have been painted over with white to cover something up but never thought it might be fake.

The beak is pure sculpture. The only bone used was a bobcat/lynx cranium.

Thankies!

The story behind your image makes it all the better. I agree that it's not as strong as some other pieces, but it's still nice. Heh, I wonder how many people take your stories seriously

ROFL! I had quite a few believers on the Cragback skull.
But my next griffin will definately have more thought into it.

Hmm. Generally your fantasy skulls are good and look pretty seamless, but this isn't one of your better works. I think you need to work with birds more, this one doesn't work well at all.

Zhon In reply to Falconsong [2008-05-02 22:01:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, he is a bit rough around the beak (which isn't shaped well to begin with as it was pulled over a broken lynx skull)
Perhaps my next one will look better!

It's actually either a really really big bobcat, or a good sized lynx. Found it as a broken skull and this is what became of it.

At the studio the guys throw out skulls that aren't perfect. I also know of a native trade shop that sells broken trash skulls for crafters.

Zhon In reply to Silver-Comet [2008-04-29 03:40:58 +0000 UTC]

The beak is sculpted (I will get better photos soon) and the cranium came from either a lynx or a super big bobcat.
