Looks like someone hasn't become familiar with Fire Emblem. But is the quality of the weapon not measured by the one using it?

So you agree with me? Then tell me, how can a sword be superior to any weapon if it all falls upon the one wielding it? It's not the sword that's superior, it's the swordsman, halberdier, archer, etc.

I agree. I've always seen the Night Guard as using sabre/katanna type swords. This differentiates them from the spear wielding Day Guards, is easier to use in enclosed spaces, and the closer combat means your less likely to confuse who you're attacking in the dark.
Also it makes a pony look aWesome: [link]

I assume you mean the western european medieval longsword, since western europe also had: shortswords, cutlasses, claymoors, etc. The sabre was an eastern European sword in the middle ages (until calvary replaced knights on the battle field when it became more used) and, of course, the katanna was a medieval Japanese sword.

I dare to disagree. I think that it's more about the soldier's personal proficiency. So I imagine each Lunar Guard with a weapon he/she has mastered. Some with katanas, some with double axes, some with spears...I do tend to imagine the strongest ones using weapons like this one, though...

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with that. A soldier needs to be able to use whatever weapon they happen to have access to when trouble arises. Also each guard is going to be equiped for their specific duty. A guard in the main hall will be equiped differently than one patroling the castle wall, different than one flying patrol over canterlot, different than one keeping tabs on what has become of the changeling army. All I'm saying is I believe/like the idea of the Night Guard's 'standard' weapon being a curved sword instead of the Day Guard's spear.
The problem with giving every guard the weapon they've personally mastered is it's horrible tactically and logistically. Imagine being an officer during an attack and grabbing the nearest dozen guards to defend a choke point. How would you 'best deffend that choke point if the guards are equipped as follows: (2) sword and shield, (2) spears, (1)nunchucks, (1) mace, (1) quarterstaff, (1) bow, (1) crossbow, (1) flail, (1) great-sword and (1) battleaxe. Yes it can be done but it won't be as efficient as shields up front, spears over top and the archer in the rear. The strength of any army is in the ability of it's parts to work together to be more powerful than any individual can be on their own.
Then there's the logistics. Imagine the royal weapon smiths trying to keep dozens, if not hundreds of different types of weapons in stock in case one's misplaced or broken. And the poor quartermasters who have to keep track of all of that. As opposed to 'swords on the left, spears on the right.' Certainly an individual who's demonstrated proficiency with a weapon could provide their own but the guard will only provide the ones they're training you in.

Well, that's if you see the Lunar Guard like their Solar Counterparts. I usually see them more like a Special Operations Group rather than simple guards. That's why I usually imagine them working in small squads in classified missions rather than just in guard duty. But of course I understand what you mean, and I do agree that either a curved sword or a halfberd would be better for them in place of the Solar spears.

I always assumed that 1,000 years ago the day and night guard split the responcibilities evenly. When Luna fell (which I see as partially due to the 'betrayal' of her night guard as they placed their duty to Equestria above their duty to her)the night guard was rolled into the day guard as one united force.
Now that Luna's back the Night guard is beginning to reform. However if you look at the wedding episode it's obvious that their numbers are still low (probably because of Luna's still low image among the population in general, like the beginning of the 'Nightmare night' episode). Therefore the relatively few ponies who are currently assigned to the night guard would take up special assignments as the bulk of thir duties where, as you suggest, they we have greater lattitude to carry non-standard equipment.
In the future however when there are enough night guard to take over regular castle duties I see swords as tthere would be more standardized equipment among them and as you say a curved sword or a halfbard would be appropriate.
Hasbro listen up!

all I can say is eeyup! You're right. And I would like to see more Luna in the show as well, she's a great character that has been greatly ignored or subestimated.

Even if we say she hasn't been seen much is seasons 1 & 2 because she's been off learning the past 1,000 years of history, social norms, and current diplomatic arrangements of Equestria she should be ready to go by season three.
