Description So this weekend, I'm taking a quick sketch course at Gage Academy of Art (check it out if you're in the Seattle area). I've always had difficulty with working too slowly and meticulously with my renderings, so I thought a class that emphasized rapid drawing (other than just gesture) would be fantastic. Also from the course description it sounded like a good way to start training my visual memory.

For the first day (of two - six hours of instruction each day) we primarily drew each other. This structure was designed so as to give us subjects that were moving, but not very much. We would each turn a little as we worked around the room, but our general position and posturing remained the same. It was a fantastic experience - not only to get back to quickly sketching, but also as an introduction to sketching in public. I've always been self conscious while drawing strangers - but this help develop it into a more comfortable habit.

Anyway, I started the day by drawing each person around the room (the top drawing). Then we did some looser charcoal and contour drawings - and I did a coffee shop sketch for my lunch break (not shown). In the final section of the class we had free study - using whichever approach from that day we liked the most, and I chose to do a more complete sketch of the room (the lower image).

Looking forward to tomorrow, when we'll be sketching outside in one of the downtown pavilions!
