This is ME when I meet other EmmyxLayton fans XD Granted, I'm pretty much an all-inclusive het-shipper for Proffy regardless (Proffy x Claire, Emmy, Rosetta, Janice, etc.), but I really just adore him with Emmy because they're just such FUN in my mind -- everything from cute to saucy to funny
And truth be told, within this tiny fandom, LaytonxEmmy shippers are very rare, especially compared to other pairings which tend to be more much popular/prominent. Which is fine; to each their own, but it just makes me get even MORE excited when I find other fans of this particular pairing
I just get all glassy-eyed and smiley and retarded whenever another LaytonxEmmy fan pops up and goes, "Oh, I love them, too!"* 3 *

I'm that way for most fandoms. Like in Sherlock, for example, I only really ship about...four things? And only two of those include the main character himself (and are not het pairings), but for Layton I just find it so hard to not ship things.
(as long as Luke is adopted by Layton I really don't care who Layton is with romantically. I have to admit that Luke is my favourite. I like Layton with Emmy being surrogate parents to Luke. In my head I call them Puzzle Family)

I do tend to be, but I honestly don't understand ship wars or why people get so vehement about it. They only ships I am violently against are sherlolly and shirene (for Sherlock) because of...well, really long reasons. It's always really weird for me to get into a fandom where I don't have a preference, like for Hunger Games. I didn't care who ended up with whom in the end. (and, to an extent, Harry Potter. Although I am pissed he wound up with Ginny)
I like the idea of women throwing themselves at him (well, women, men, anybody) because of how damn flustered he gets

I don't involve myself with "ship wars" because frankly I think it's stupid. Β People should do what they do, and just respect each other; that's just how life is. Β I won't mess with someone else's tastes if they don't mess with mine, you know? It's FICTION and enjoyment. Β Let it be, is what I say.

I admit. I haven't even learn what shipping, headcanons, and canon...OTPs...means until about late 2009-2010...I'm late.

Don't worry! I didn't know what "shipping" or "pairing" or all that nonsense was until around then either, when I was first joining the Layton fandom (around late 2009)! So you aren't alone
I too prefer het pairings (vs. yaoi) just because I'm a total sucker for "boy meets girl" sort of things. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned and boring, but it's what I enjoy

There's people out there...and those I know in person that direct the Layton doll(s) I got as a...the word that also starts with p and it's not professor (and has to deal with the topic about him being with the kids)...considering Luke and Flora...also it is because the appearance upon the eyes...I simply like him portrayed to have the mentor and fatherly role...
I don't see the character, Professor Layton, to act in that sort of manner at all...and I dislike how people are a 'tease' upon that topic.
Aside from that, hooray I found more people like you that likes the boy to girl pairs!

Yeah, I'm a total het shipper -- it's just what I like! I don't have anything against the other kinds, my friends are into that and it's cool -- but for me I much prefer het stuff. It's just what appeals to me personally
And I'm in total agreeance with you about the other topic you mentioned. I really dislike when Layton is portrayed in that light, I find it kind of distasteful. It's funny when it's joked about now and again, but frankly I've seen it too much to find it that funny anymore.
