Description
No Trust in the Light
Before I tell you this story, you should know a bit about the person who I’m talking about.
Ashknix isn’t a human, at least, not totally human. He is part pheonix, snake, plant, and human. His hair is light green and is made up of three leaves. His face is like a human’s, but with snake-like skin. Patches of his face are skeleton, deep scars in the bone, and his eyes are light blue. You can only see one eye, the other is covered by his hair. His left hand is like a skeleton’s, three-fingered, and his right is a utility. Usually a spoon. He wears a dark red trench coat and dark pink-red shoes. He’s practically a loner, and this is one story:
Intro: Sky, Sun, and Clouds
Ashknix laid back on a rock at the beach. He looked up at the Fading Sea. Both his arms were behind his head. He listened to the soothing sound of the ocean waves hitting the beach, and the majestic calls of the birds flying across the sky. He watched them fly across his vision then disappear as they exited his view of the light-blue Fading Sea. Fluffy, white Crying Wave-Tips slowly floated across the Fading Sea, the DayFire shone down on the island, bringing the lighted day. The smell of the salty ocean lingered in the air.
“Appears to be clear Fades tonight.” he said. “And maybe tomorrow, too.”
“That’s nice,” he replied to himself. “maybe someone will come and enjoy it with us.”
“Yea,”
“You think that’ll really happen?”
Ashknix thought about it.
“We’ve said that it would happen several times, so I don’t know this time.”
“True..”
A large vessel sailed towards his island.
Section 1: Beach and Forest
“I’m still wondering whether or not haunters get nightmares.” he said, standing and watching a seagull. His hands in his pockets.
“Me too,”
Ashknix looked out over the ocean, the waves flowed endlessly out to the horizon, not a sign of other life. He turned around and looked into the dense, green forest on his island. He never had gone in farther than the crooked, rickety, old tree with an old lance dangling from it. Along his beach there was nothing besides him and some animals. He’s circled the whole island beachside several times, no sign of humanoid life besides him. Inland, he will figure out later.
Section 2: Home
Ashknix started to walk home. His home looks more like a pile of random cloth draped over some rocks. But that isn’t just it. He lifted the cloth up and slid down the tunnel shaft.
He zoomed past chunks of rock and glowmeralds. The glowmeralds gave a soft, green glow that lit up the tunnel. He eventually slid past the yellow-colored gems, which also glowed it’s color softly. He eventually slid off one of the ramps and sailed through a light blue lighted cavern of water and rock. His dark red trench coat flapped as he flew through the air, he landed on the other path and stopped.
“Wonder why we chose to live down here,” he said as he walked towards one of the many exotic tables in his underground cave-home and sat down.
A large, circular rock cavern was what he called home. Nine waterfalls flowed out of the walls high in the air, a moat surrounded the middle island were Ashknix has his home. Exotic tables surrounded the perimeter, found washed up on the shore. A big pillar in the middle held up the StillWater dome top with a staircase spiraling up it. Japanese maples grew in the cavern, two at the base of the pillar and several in the spots where the waterfalls weren’t falling. The water, much like the cavern before, glowed and flowed with unknown energy. It splashed up against the sides of the middle island when the ocean was rough.
Section 3: NightShine and NightHaunt
“What do you believe is happening to the ocean tonight?” Ashknix asked.
“What do you mean?” he replied to himself.
“I mean, it looks rough at the bottom.” he studied his view of the ocean bottom from underground. “It isn’t usually like this.”
“Weather...”
“It was supposed to be clear Fades tomorrow and tonight, remember?”
“Ask the fish.”
“I’m not an amphibian.”
“You’re part snake, there are water snakes.”
“Really? I didn’t know that.”
“Take a swim! Then you’ll know.”
KABLAM!
Something, maybe LightStrikes, exploded and lit up the ocean bottom. Ashknix quickly got up and ran to the exit, a water tunnel. He jumped in, holding his breath, and swam up the tunnel. When he got to the top he climbed out, he clambered down the beach, the harsh wind pushing against him. When he got to a safe place he looked up at the sky.
“I believe that you were mistaken when you claimed there would be clear Fades tonight.” he said to himself.
“Truth be told, I was very sure.” he could barely hear the words he spoke against the harsh howls of the wind.
“Yes, you were,” said a voice. “that’s why I changed the weather, to get your attention.”
The gray Crying Wave-Tips disintegrated into a magical DayFire fall. Ashknix watched at the warm DayFire slip away under the horizon, then turned to watch the cold NightShine quickly fade into the now black Fading Sea.
Ashknix felt a cold, chilly thing touch his elbow. He immediately turned sharply and yanked his arm away.
“Hello, Ashknix,” said the voice soothingly. “I’ve never seen you overground at Night.”
Ashknix looked at the figure. A void-black figure with softly glowing, golden eyes looked into his. It had no legs or feet, just a jumble of bent black wisps. It’s hair looked the same, but were smoother.
“Who are you?” he asked the creature.
“NightHaunt.”
“How do you know my name? I’ve almost never spoken it before.”
NightHaunt flew into the air and did a cartwheel, then she, he, whatever it was, looked at him.
“You should hear what you say at night!” it joked, giving a big grin. “Most of it is rather fascinating to listen to, but sometimes you scream.”
“I do?” He asked, starting to think this person was one of those ‘stalker’ people.
NightHaunt was quiet for a minute, then it laughed. “No, I’m not a stalker, Ashknix.” it flew next to him. “I’m just here at night, and I used to think I was completely alone until DayLife told me about you being here. You don’t have a door, so I couldn’t’ve knocked to get your attention. Plus, you’re rather cute when you sleep.”
Ashknix looked at NightHaunt weirdly, “You watch me sleep?”
“Pretty much, what else could I do? You’re asleep at night!” it flew around him again.
“You could wake me up.”
“True, but I was shy!”
“Shy?”
“Yea, shy. You know, where you don’t have the bravery to do something.”
Ashknix was silent, then he looked up at NightShine.
“Does NightShine cause the darkness at night?”
NightHaunt flew next to Ashknix, landed, and looked up at NightShine.
“No, the darkness at night is caused by the absence of the sun.”
Ashknix looked at NightHaunt, “What’s ‘the sun’?”
“It’s what you call ‘DayFire’”
Ashknix looked at the sand, “Huh,” he looked at the horizon were DayFire fell. “I prefer Day Fire.”
“Me too.”
He looked back up at NightShine, ”If DayFire is ‘the sun’, what is NightShine?”
“The moon.”
There was a silence.
NightHaunt looked at Ashknix, “Hey, wanna see something cool?”
“Huh?”
“Too bad, you have no choice anyway.” NightHaunt grabbed Ashknix’s elbow and flew off over the forest.
Ashknix was so surprised he didn’t do or say anything. He simply stared straight forward at NightShine.
Section 4: DayFire and DayLife
“Ashknix, just look down at the forest.” NightHaunt said, stopping.
Ashknix looked at the forest below him and he closed his eyes.
“I’d rather be at ho-” he felt NightHaunt’s grip diminish. He fell.
He turned until he faced up, NightHaunt was not above him. He turned to the ground; the trees flew at him at high speeds.. or was it him flying at them?
“Well, this is an interesting predicament.” he said.
“You bet.” he replied to himself.
Ashknix had no idea what to do, he never thought he would be in this situation.
Flap his arms? He tried, but only slammed into the tree branches. He tumbled down through the tree, and finally was caught by a thick branch.
“LOLZ” said a voice. “That was the funniest struggle I’ve seen.”
Ashknix lifted himself up and shook his head.
“‘Lolz’? What is that?”
“It means ‘Laugh Out Loud’”
Wiping his lip on his sleeve, he looked at the person, yet another flying one. It was dressed in a long, red and orange dress. It’s skin had a nice tan and its eyes were purple. It had white gloves on it’s hands and black shoes.
“What?” it asked.
Ashknix scowled at it before swinging down to the ground.
“You aren’t very talkative, are you?”
He didn’t answer. He just started walking towards the sound of the beach. It landed next to him and walked along with him. They walked in silence until it stopped him.
“The name’s DayLife,” it said. “thank you for asking.”
Ashknix nodded at DayLife, then continued walking. “You’re welcome.”
DayLife ran next to him.
“I’ve heard you’re the loner on this island,” DayLife stated, but stopped suddenly.
Ashknix became startled and looked at DayLife. She had a creepy, wide, psychopathic smile on.
“I can help with that.”
Section 5: Time to Shine
Ashknix took a couple steps back, “What?”
DayLife’s hands erupted in flame, “Hope you’ve had a bad life,” she started to walk towards him, “Because now is your time to shine like the sun!”
A fireball flew towards Ashknix, he put his left hand in front of his face and caught it.
His own hand erupted into flame, this caught DayLife by surprise. The patches on his face that are skeleton ignited, and licks of flame covered his right ankle.
“You’re not the only one with firepower.” he said, hand still raised. “This should be fun.. for you.”
He swung his hand to the right, then pulled it diagonally down. A slash of flame hit DayLife, she stumbled back into a tree. Ashknix walked towards her.
“It happens to be rather amusing that you think you can kill me.” he said smugly, not changing his expression.
DayLife looked up at him, she smiled. “That’s because I can.” she flew straight up in the air and stopped once she was in the middle of the trees. She put her hands together and fired a column of fire at him. He raised his hand again and countered it. He overcame her and shot her out of the Fading Sea. She fell into a patch of bushes.
“Can you?” he asked, not moving. “I know the trick, wait in your spot where you fell until your opponent approaches. Then you attack them. It’s not going to work, DayLife.”
DayLife flew out of the bushes, she dove for him and tried to punch him. He snaked around her arm as she flew towards him. She slammed into the ground.
“Predictable.” he stated, prepared for the next attack.
“Oh yes it was,” said a voice from the shadows. “Let me take care of this, Ashknix.”
Suddenly wisps of shadows covered the forest floor. Ashknix took several steps back until he looked up. Pitch-black wisps weaved through the trees, encasing them in total darkness. The only light source was Ashknix. He looked at DayLife, she stared at her hands and clenched them, desperate to ignite them.
“Your powers don’t work without the light of the sun, DayLife.” said NightHaunt, walking towards them. “Mine work as long as there are shadows.”
Ashknix was surprised that NightHaunt was there. He thought for a split second then joined in on the plan.
“It’s a funny thing that your name has the word ‘life’ in it,” NightHaunt teased. “because you’d rather kill someone than let them live.”
DayLife scowled at NightHaunt, “Yea, and what are you going to do to me?” she challenged. “You can’t hurt me without getting banished to Earth.”
NightHaunt smiled evilly, “I’m not going to do anything,”
“I am.” Ashknix said, raising his spoon hand. Then he got a crazy look in his eyes as his faint insanity took over, a crazy smile spread across his face. “I’ve only enjoyed killing one other person. I forgot his name.. hopefully I’ll remember before you die.”
The silhouette of Ashknix was the last thing DayLife saw.
Aftermath: The LightBlade Dagger
Ashknix sits on top of the cliff wall, staring out over the ocean.
“That’s an interesting adventure you had,” you say when he’s done. “but what happened to NightHaunt and DayFire afterwards?”
Ashknix is silent; he studies the dagger that has replaced his spoon. “After I killed DayLife, NightHaunt helped me get back home,”
“On shadowed paths of course,” you say.
“Yes, in the shadows.” Ashknix looks at your ship that took anchor in his bay, then returns his attention to the blade. “NightHaunt gave me this dagger, the LightBlade, and said it’s easier to kill people with than a spoon.”
You are silent.
He looks back over the horizon and sets his hand down. “I don’t think the same thing, but the hilt fits better in the socket than my spoon does.”
You look at the dagger. Pale white in color, the quartz dagger has elaborate engravings of swirls and hieroglyphs.
“What do the hieroglyphs say?” you ask, looking back up at him.
“I don’t know, nor do I intend to find out.” he says, not turning.
“If you have one last thing to say, what is it?”
Ashknix is quiet for a few minutes, looking out over the ocean. You wait silently, after two or three minutes you start to feel uneasy. He opens his mouth to taste the salty sea air, then closes it and looks at your ship once more, the flag waving proudly and the sails wrapped up. Soft creaks and moans come from the hull as the ship bobs with the waves. The crystal blue water splashes the hull, exploding into small white water droplets.
“I have nothing to say,” he claims, then he looks you in the eye for the first time. “Except this,” his cold skeleton hand covers your eyes. “Don’t trust the light.”
