Description

Months had passed. Summer had come.

This time last year, James would have spent every free minute at the lake, probably with Andrew, certainly with friends.

This year, few were swimming in the lake. James assumed it was because of the muddy water no one could explain. So he remained alone, like he had intended to - but every day the loneliness became harder to bear, and finally it was so much he decided to try to leave the lake again.

Nothing had changed about the cold dread, the pull that set in when he approached the shore. But this time, he persisted, and finally, for the first time since the day he should have died, he resurfaced.

The world above looked painfully familiar.

He continued through the shallow water, heading towards the village without thinking. Only when he had almost reached the shore he realized something had changed. Something small. A little memorial on the lake’s edge.

James stopped.

Someone was approaching the shore from the other side.

He was holding a bunch of flowers; as a man, James hadn’t had a favourite flower, but as a boy he had always loved the bright orange of marigolds.

His eldest brother stopped just short of the shore as well, looking out at the lake. James realized Mark couldn’t see him; it didn’t even come as a surprise. He just stood there, drinking in the familiar features, his heart pulling apart at the grief on his brother’s face.

***

Now that the plains event is over, back to your usual program of suffering James.

Oh and since this looks like it might reinforce a common misconception: James did not, in fact, die. He got lost emotionally when he was losing the love of his life , and that's when Seventh came across him, and transformed him c: Since his boundary is the lake bottom, he disappeared into it without a trace, so his family obviously assumed he was dead.
