Description Meh, I actually painted something. Probably has errorcrapwonkiness. Pretty tired right now.

Fictitious view on what the PiikkiΓΆ-Paimio area of Finland might have looked like in the Bronze Age. Great chunks of the present-day dry land in the south were underwater, and the noblemen of elderdays were laid to rest on islets which now stand out as cliffs in the forests. Even today almost every higher spot in PiikkiΓΆ and Paimio has a barrow or some other prehistoric monument on top of it. Some have been plundered and destroyed during the millennia (for instance peasants have been know to use the stones as bases for cowsheds and bordermarks), but some still stand large and intact, like the 15-meter-long tumulus on top of Pohtionvuori hill.

The dawn rises around 1000 B.C. Sacrificial fires are burnt to hail the forefathers. Some lone hunter sits by his ersatz camp.

The textures...the details...how long does it take you to DO something like this? o__o

Γ–rr... 30-40h in the course of two weeks. I took up painting again to relax, so I didn't really count the hours this time.

Thanks. The weather's been really bad here for a long while and haven't gotten out hiking much myself (also been sick lately). Probably one reason why I wanted to paint some wilderness. XD

I never knew any of that! It really does pay to read the artist's comments.

It's a great pic, as well.

I don't think Finnish prehistory is over-represented anywhere in the first place. So I shall keep on writing these annoyingly educating commentaries. XDD

Thanks.

I was just learning about this in Anthropology. We didn't get to spend much time because we were working towards written language and etc, but we might come back to it later too. I think you well captured the dark landscape of the past, it has a way of looking magical just by virtue of being unspoiled. The barrows on the islets are a very interesting image. The past is so intriguing to me.

Heh, I love immersing into history/mythology, especially the Nordic. Also provides some change to my grad studies. XD I got the picture idea whilst hiking on the very area. Seeing the ruins yourself puts the imagination rolling.

Which topic in particular did you have in Anthropology? The Nordic Bronze Age or something more generalized?

More generalized. We will be revisiting European areas later in the term, though. I hope we will take a look at the Nordic region in more detail then.

I like it - it really captures the feeling of a temporary home or camp in the midst of isolation!
