Description
...will there ever be a time I choose to stick to one design of the indoor arena of Zdarloch? Yes. Yes, now is this time Here you finally have it, after various revisions over the years, lol... ..for now, anyway. ZOUB WHY.
Also, if you're only going to comment 'OH NO BEHIND THE VERTICAL!!!11 ZOUB U SUCKKK!!11' please don't. Read the story And then... please don't do it either, actually. You'll see what's up further ahead.
Previously:
Few people had an ego like Simon Kvark Guldborg. In spite of the guy’s relative shortness of stature he was a towering stronghold of arrogance and ruthless ambition; a master in the fine arts of manipulation and superficial charm - and a veritable whirlwind of self-important, self-satisfied, self-inflated selfishness. In the trail of his heedless wake he had left a series of flattened friendships, rotten rivalries and trampled trusts… and immense, sparkling successes. He was brilliant. Indeed, his ability in the saddle was only surpassed by his own estimation of his ability in the saddle.
…So it was with a certain uncharacteristic smugness that Gideon watched Sagadir employ his finest trick in the art of not working harder than necessary: curling up in the front and avoiding Simon’s hand instead of lifting his back and seeking contact on the bit. False collection – a classic Zlesdin move.
Gideon watched them out of the corner of his eye while Kaisa trotted Kvantespring in large, loose circles around him as part of the warm-up. The pattern was subtle for those who did not know what to look for, but clear for him who knew Sagadir through-and-through: every time they reached a corner the horse tucked. On each long side he uncurled again, following Simon’s cue forward. Contact on, off, on, off…
Gideon knew this stunt quite well – he had been involved with Sagadir since the horse was a lanky hooligan of 5 years and Andy had asked for help to solve this issue and others. Now, at almost 10 years and approaching his Grand Prix debut, Sagadir was well-muscled and well-balanced – but it seemed only a few months of Kaisa’s riding had allowed this particular old flaw to return. Good thing Gideon knew the solution for it. Sharing a few tips would no doubt spare Simon some frustrations in the process of fixing it. They were on the same team now, after all, and riding a new horse was always a bit experimental during those first months.
,,Simon,” he called out. ,,More impulsion round the bends. Schenkel, not seat. Driving your seat into his back will only discourage him from lifting it.”
Simon’s gaze fixed on him, much akin to the way someone might stare down a mosquito after locating the source of its incessant, anxiety-inducing buzzing.
,,Don’t attempt to force contact on his mouth when he evades you – let him seek contact with your hand. He’s not used to being ridden very rein-heavy.”
Simon circled closer, forcing Kaisa to evade him as he pulled up on the centerline close to where Gideon had chosen to stay.
,,How dare you?!” Simon all but hissed at him. His shoulders were angrily drawn upwards; his entire form staring down from the back of the tall, grey stallion exuded an acid-like animosity: sharp and corrosive.
,,Excuse me?”
,,You think you’re some kind of Besserwisser dressage authority around here; entitled to micromanage every aspect of other people’s riding?” Simon went on with a searing undertone of boiling anger in his voice. ,,You think I can’t feel what he’s doing? I’m working on it. You’re not better than me.”
Gideon, knowing the stubborn nature of his old rival, should perhaps have anticipated a backlash like this. If there was one thing Simon despised it was getting critique from others – especially useful critique. It was an attitude Gideon has always found uninspired and arrogant.
,,With that horse, I am better than you.” he stated drily. ,,I know him. I rode him for four years.”
,,Oh?” one of Simon’s eyebrows lifted mockingly. ,,By all means, master Besserweiser, perhaps you would like to give a demonstration of your superior methods, then?” He gestured to the saddle and drew out the ensuring silence for a few seconds longer than necessary.
,,No? You can’t? What a shame, I forgot you need two functioning legs for that.”
...Ouch. Gideon drew a long breath.
,,You don’t have to get nasty about it.”
,,Oh please; don’t tell me I hurt your feelings?” Simon smiled and for a second his smile looked genuinely apologetic. ,,I meant no offense. Thought gallows humor was very much your thing.”
,,’Gallows humor’ is only humor when you’re the one at the gallows.” Gideon decided to skip the subject. Appealing to Simon’s better nature was usually a long shot. ,,In any case – only trying to help you out here. Same team, as you put it.”
,,Yeah, well,” Simon clicked his tongue impatiently. ,,I don’t need your ‘help’. There are more than one ways to fix a problem. Your method isn’t the only one that works. So mind your own business.”
He gave the cue to trot. Sagadir complied but lifted his head an inch, confused at the choice of direction – without breaking the rhythm stallion took a step sideways and barely avoided knocking his former rider down. Gideon, felt the silky while-tipped tail trailing across his arm as the horse passed so close past him, and took notice of the fact that the cue to step sideways had not come from Simon.
,,Wow.” Kaisa said next to him, unimpressed. ,,What a dick.”
Gideon made a saying roll of his eyes as in ‘told you so’, though quite honestly even he was surprised at the extent of Simon’s dick-ish tendencies today.
,,Right, back to work,” he told Kaisa. ,,20 meter circle again. Let’s work on that stretch…”
He shot a glance to Simon and Sagadir once more. Simon, knowing he was being watched, had indeed decided to give another method a try: good old hyperflexion. Tried and tested by elite riders around the globe. Nothing could uncurl a horse quite like the liberty of being allowed a longer rein after a session of hyperflexion.
…nothing, except of course, for proper loosening and correct riding. Gideon bit his tongue and sighed with annoyance at what he was seeing. Simon should know better than this. Gideon knew that Simon knew better than this. What game was he playing?
It did not matter. Discussing anything with Simon was useless- no, if you wanted something done you had to discuss it with the right authorities. And Andy, highest authority and equine veterinarian, would surely not be happy to hear his beloved grey was being ridden this way.
To be continued ~

Weeell… So much for “being on the same team”, Simon… *slow clap*
I may be over-analyzing this a bit (and if so, forgive me!) but I kind of have this head-canon that Simon always felt like the runner-up compared to Gideon: they are both victims of parental pressure - that’s a fact - and come from similar social/economic backgrounds, so their personalities made a great difference in how they react to “not winning”: Gideon was gifted with the ability to separate his dressage scores from his perception of himself - not to mention, a temper that allows him to ask and benefit from helpful critiques; Simon, on the other hand, believes that “coming second” = “being a failure”, and thus sees any advice about his riding as a judgment made about himself (basically, “He’s judging my riding” —> “He’s judging me” -> “I’m a worthless rider” —> “I’m a terrible human being”, or something along those lines). Plus, as he himself stated at the first Welma H. Memorial Show, he and Spiegelau had been undefeated only since Gideon lost his previous horse, which obviously didn’t really prove which one of the two was the better rider; Flyinge would have been a good way to measure off to each other again, but Simon was only called because Gideon was in a coma following a traumatic road accident (so not because he “deserved it”, but merely because they had to find a spare for the team when their first choice had to be written off). Sure, Sejrbank seized the opportunity to acquire - even if temporarily - both Zdarloch and Sagadir, which can be seen as a payback of sorts: but since Sagadir is bound to make his Grand Prix debut at a very young age, Simon has another reason to feel like his riding/training skills are being tested; thus, his reaction is to downright ignore anything Gideon says, because otherwise it would mean that he lacks what it takes to ride this new horse like his old rider used to do. At this point, it’s quite likely that his ego lies on a pretty shaky ground, so - while fueled by a very egocentric core personality - some parts of his behavior are unconsciously linked to the need of “being in charge” - and the correlated fear of being at the low end of the hierarchy.
Whew, rant over! I’m sorry, but shady characters with less to no known personal background are honestly my guilty pleasure, more so if they are so well written: I’m seriously amazed at how you can keep everyone on their toes about the fate of these poor darlings, not to mention that your dialogues are so well thought out I’m speechless. I always struggle with them - mostly because they always sound a bit “fake” (English is not my native language, but still). And should we get started on your art? I say yes! Plus, I found myself giggling an awful lot at the descriptions, because you make them so funny to read over and over again, which is terrific. The unfortunate fall of Phuong in the Magasindam has to be one of my absolute favorites thus far.
Like.
“All right, everything fine thus far.”
“Wait, is that…”
“OH GOD, NO!”
“It’s not gonna crash, is not gonna crash…”
“It’s so gonna crash.”
“SERIOUSLY?! WHEN DID I EVER SAID YES TO THAT?!”
Can’t wait what those folks will be up to in the next future!
On an unrelated note, I just imagined one of my characters reacting to the scene with something like:
“SIMON KVARK GULDBORG {it’s a huge red flag when he uses someone’s full name; if The Stare is present too, run for your life!}, you’re one rude and unwanted comment away from me stripping you to the saddle upside down to shake those few brain cells you still have back together, if your ego doesn’t crush you on the way down!”

Heh right.. 'same team', nice one Simon
..you actually hit the issue RIGHT on the nail; well spotted! There is a lot of that mindset in Simon's behaviour/personality, and it explains quite a few of his actions. His base personality isn't a bad one as such, but it has fostered some rather undesirable character traits and a big, fragile ego has flourished from that.
But, of course, Gideon has flaws, issues and undesirable character traits too; nobody is perfect x) While his are not so 'IN YOUR FACE' superlative like Simon's (due to a quiet, complacent core personality), they are definitely there ~
And aaaa, thank you very much for this long, very well-thought out comment that so accurately described your head-canon, it was SUPER interesting to read and nod along in agreement
And thank you for the kind words as well! Writing in English is often a bit HMMM for me as well, since it isn't my first language either, and it often feels... strangely clunky to write? xD Anyway, I am very glad you enjoy my stuff, my kiddoes and their questionable antics x) ...I don't think Phuong will ever live the Magasindam experience down xD
...hahaha, that would be GLORIOUS if he actually did that :'''D Though he sounds like the type of guy you would NOT want to piss off :')

A+ for effort, F for everything else :,D
I'm so glad you feel that way! I always have a bit of reservation when making projections about someone else's character, so I'm more than relieved to hear that I didn't completely messed up this one XD Well, this leaves looots of space for character development, doesn't it? And yeah, it seems that Gideon's antics get more annoying on the long run (TWD docet), but could pass more or less undected if one doesn't know him well (pessimistic bore tendencies aside). Bute - hey! - that's what makes a good, well-rounded character! And your reply totally made my day, through and through X33
Speaking of flaws... I just re-read Gideon's ref (which, by the way, is brilliant: would you mind if I noted down some of the voices you picked up for your lovelies? They are super useful to have a clear overview of their quirks/mannerisms and keep them in character) and I remembered something: there is a city, in my country, whose inhabitants are best known for two things: being exceptionally stingy and declaring "complaining" a national sport. Apparently things got so bad that they were offered to never pay taxes again in their lifetime (and I mean, literally not one cent), if they agreed to stop whining about every single thing at every single time. Guess what? They kept the taxes. #Priorities
You're so very welcome :33 And I agree, it is a strange language sometimes! I guess that a bit of my clunkiness with it comes from being a tongue of an entirely different family from my own, so - vocabulary apart - it has a whole different mindset I have to take into account. Still, you make it look so easy, seriously! Plus, your kiddoes are always such a pleasure to watch, questionable antics included!
Well, in a way we can say that the Magasindam splash did actually brough her luck! I mean, Kaisa got an accident that injured her horse for good and now is afraid to jump; Gideon got into a nasty, nasty car accident that left him semi-paralyzed, with a partially missing leg and forced him to retire from riding; Andy got down with leukemia - and, while dismissed, is not in the clear yet; Annie found herself dealing with all of this mess pretty much alone and with a new baby on the way... Compared to the others, I would say that she dodged a good number of bullets!
I can't stop laughing at the scene XD And yes, I wouldn't recommend to anyone to push his buttons too hard and too far: remarks like this one are usually his last resort, though, since passive-aggressive is much more his game (he usually avoids being the center of attention - mostly due to a not-so-healthy cocktail of "rookie syndrome", a lot of insecurities and some nasty experiences when he first entered the equestrian world); to have him snap like that you would really need to wear his patience thin, which... is not a good idea, nope. In a way, he's closer to Gideon in terms of personality: soft-spoken, quiet, reserved, strong work ethic, you get the gig. And while he will tolerate some not-so-nice comments, he suffers no fools, especially if they come bothering him for no reason; otherwise, he's really easy to get along with, crippling shyness apart. Like, I had an idea of entering him in the RDHS Dressage Cup at Cronenburg, but he would probably go into full panic mode if some senpai (aka Kaira) would just say "Hello" to him while passing by XD What can I say, he could definitely use some confidence boost every now and then!
PS: as a non-dressage rider, what's the difference between schenkel and seat, if I may ask?

Oh, I absolutely love hearing people's head canons One, because I am absolutely humbled that people are interested enough to care and spin theories! And two, because it gives me a pretty good feel whether I'm being clear enough in the way I present the characters (since I don't exactly want to give things away either; it's a fine balance). So reading your thoughts on it was super interesting ~
Ooohh yep, Con/Gideon can definitely get tiresome to listen to when he goes into Eeyore mode and just nags, nags, nags... especially if you're a problem-solving type, because low mutterings don't really solve anything :') And thank you so much <3
Oh sure thing! And... wow, seriously? That is some next-level complaining right there...! I guess the inhabitants take a certain.. pride(?) in this art? Either way, it's a hilarious story! Priorities indeeeed x)
Ah yes, that makes good sense.. prononciation and grammar is one thing; idiomatics is an entirely different realm. Might I ask what your first language is? c: And thank you so much; I'm glad you think so <3
Absolutely; compared to just-about-everyone-else she managed very well (apart, of course, from the trauma that follows seeing all that bad luck bestowed on one's social circle)! It is rumoured to bring a year of good luck if you take a dip in the pond, so it seems to have been true in her case. We'll see if that luck can last ~
I seeee..! He sounds like an interesting fella; passive-aggressive is a ''fun'' character trait to explore >) And ah, I do hope to see him at the RDHS Cup - I'm planning to bring #TeamGoldAndSilver (Simon/Sagadir), come say hi >) (..if he dares? And Kaira is certainly a senpai to be awed by, although she is also... super chill. None of the fame has risen to her head; from what I understand it's more like the opposite. In any case: she's cool x) )
...Yes you may! ^^ Schenkel is just the technical word for 'leg' - in particular it refers to the lower leg. When Con tells Simon to use 'leg and not seat' he's obviously not encouraging Simon to KICK WITH SPURS but rather to squeeze the lower leg around the horse to encourage bend and lifting on the back (and once the back is right the head fixes itself) ^^

Headcanons are the end of me! One time I started to put down some headcanons for the villain of a film (I wanted an explanation of why a major faction had no known insignia whatsoever)... and suddenly I found myself with the lore of an entire world. Then one thing led to another and now I have three or four versions of the same concepts - plus some addictions and some revamped characters - and I'm still debating what I should do with them, because I honestly have no idea :,D And I wholeheartedly agree, it's a fine balance indeed! I just started to plot out my storyline - after two or three drafts that just weren't working out - and I'm positively baffled at the amount of times I was tempted to go full "backstory time" on someone before the time was due! Ahaha, I understand why Kaisa snapped so badly - honest, after a while, it's hard not to wish to just be able to tape his mouth shut! And you're most certainly welcome :33
Thank you! Ahaha, they definitely take their complaining seriously: the idea must have sounded like human rights violation to them!
No harm in asking! My mother-tongue is Italian, so it's Neo-Latin vs Germanic for me (and I'm just now trying to stick to british english, for the sake of character consistency); I'm still trying to find my own writing style - but right now it got to a point where half of the writing is "thought" in Italian (and then translated to English) and the other half is more or less all English based. It... lands to mixed results, if I'm being honest XD Mostly because my brain has to switch on and off Italian constantly, so a part of that mindset is present still when I write - or try to, lol! And you're twice welcome! A reason why I enjoy reading your stories is that you have a very good balance between dialogues and descriptions - enough to draw the reader in but without going overboard with it (which is totally a thing that I do, albeit not on purpose; thank goodness there are roleplays to practice)!
Right, poor dear! Plus, I bet that someone so sensitive to other's emotions would be, if any, even more stressed out by all the gloomy feelings around (and let's not get started on how she and Hilas are the only active showing pair still alive and in one piece, shall we?). One can only hope at this point, I guess - although I'm fairly sure that, if anyone of your darlings knew what was in for them in the next few months, they would have literally thrown themselves in the pond, just to be sure!
He's the kind of guy that won't start a fight (unless there's a very, very strong reason to do so), but will give you a helluva one if that's really what you want, basically; now that I think about it, he's very skeptical about others - much like Simon himself - mostly because he's afraid of being chewed out if he puts a step out of line. His passive-aggressive is his way to put a safe distance between him and anyone who might hurt him - especially if they rub him wrong; it's a bit of an experiment for me, thought, so it may take a while for him to be consistent in his attitude. But, consistent or not, Raphael and Zwaan (aka #TeamDhenebrian ) will be forced to gladly rise to the challenge! What's better for an overly-anxious, shy, definitely-not-blingy fella with stage fright than making his debut into Medium classes on the home grounds of the Dressage Queen herself? I can totally hear his little sister shouting all across the warm-up arena all the praises he sings of her riding... with this poor boy just wanting to be swallowed whole by the ground right-this second-if-you-please-thank-you. Ops.
Got it! I'm definitely not the dressage savant (show-jumper with a western past here!), but ever since I started to flesh out this version of Raphael I discovered a newfound respect/admiration for who practices this discipline; it's a bit harder to practice around here than SJ, but should the chance arise I wouldn't half mind giving it a try! Until that day, I feel Raphael's struggle on a personal level XD So if any mistake pops up there and there, the fault is totally my own :,D
PS: I'm also somewhat taken aback at how, just this Monday, I had the kid I tutor asking me a question about blood clotting - to later switch to white blood cells and their role in defending the organism from diseases - and then finding a literal "steinadler" chilling in my Pinterest feed. Now I'm just waiting for a snooty-looking blonde guy with a chihuahua to stroll by on the way to the library and then I will start to look thrice before crossing a street... If my black cat doesn't get red eyes first, in the meanwhile.

I have to say I am totally in love with ZS's indoor arena, the pale gray wood, and the light colored sand makes such a pleasing combination.
Oh dear Simon, everyone is trying to like ya, but when you start acting up it makes it a little hard to so, especially when it influences your riding. Dx
I feel like he knows better than to do what he did, but like he is just so angry and feeling "patronized" by Con--GIDEON- that he chooses to be a bit drastic? : o I'm not sure, just trying to give the boi some kind of "out" to dislike him a little less haha, when we get mad we don't think too clearly sometimes. x' D
Gideon is honestly just trying to help you Sir, so, please.
I'm also super curious about how Kaisa and Kvante are going to do together! Do I smell a little show for them in the future perhaps?
