Basically I'm a hobbyist, art isn't my job
I'm a medic by profession, art is what I do for fun, not for a living.
However, my regular clients are all from contacts on my FB page, a lot recommended by family and friends.
Basically word of mouth and shared posts gets me work but I only have so many slots a year and I keep it as low stress as possible.

That's still some pretty solid advice. I intend to turn art into a full time thing so that's probably a good place to start. I have experience self advertising so starting through Facebook and friends seems like a smart idea, I just never tried it.

Probably the easiest way to get started and you get your stuff out there.
The problem with most platforms (DA, ArtStation, Tumblr, FB, IG) is that your competing against thousands of others all doing the same thing.
Without a massive fan base and watch list, work is harder to come by.
I've only be 'online' with art for 14 months as before that it was just restricted to my own FB page but that was enough with all my regulars
I will never be able to make a living from art, not good enough, and use a medium folks don't want.
If you want to break into the online art world, digital art is the way to go.

Making a career as an artist is 50% art and 50% advertising and self promotion.
It's a lot of hard work and it doesn't stop.
That's why it's important to build that fan base first and go from there.

Whatever medium you choose and whatever passion you follow, just do it.
The most important thing is to enjoy yourself.
Ignore those folks who act / comment in a negative way and remember the first audience you need to please is you.
As long as your work makes you happy, that's what matters.
