Haya A, Im in animation school right now and would love to be a stop mo animator.... there are not enough of us around and CGI is running rampant.... what do you reckon. do you think I should become a puppet maker like I would like to of try andΒ focus primarily on Maya and Z brush etc?

Hi Steve! sorry for such a late answer. I reckon the skills are quite transferable. The animation principles are the same for all forms of animation, and designing a good character is about developing a good "eye". If you draw a lot of faces, that helps with sculpting them and vice versa. Same with clay and Zbrush. So if the basic skills are down, moving between mediums of expression is just an adjustment if you change your mind later.
If it helps, animators I spoke with at Aardman reckoned it was easier to go from stop-mo to CGI rather than the other way around. I can't say from personal experience though, I've barely tried Maya, though I had a little bit of fun with Zbrush.
To me the magic of animation is making the plasticine I played with as a child come to life, so CGI just doesn't do it for me, but that's me.
Hope that helps! Good luck with your animation.

Hi Andreas, thank you for your comment on my page. I originally was going to go into animation inspired by Will Vinton and his work. I decided on Film instead(Sad really, its so much easier to strut your stuff in animation) I hope one day to make it back to animation, but for now I can only watch people's superb work like yours and congratulate you on the fine job your doing.
Cheers-DanielW

Hi Dan, thanks!
Yeah, the classic Vinton Studio's stuff is great! I love their characters and how they really look like plasticine despite a high level of realism in their designs.
Being good at film is a good start for getting into animation, so I reckon you havn't vasted your time. Until last year of uni I thought I wast just gonna animate, but found myself analyzing live action features for camera angles and moves, edits, symbolism, acting, use of sound and music etc.. There's so much to it, and so much fun, animating is really just a small part of it all (though it is the one thing I will be doing when I start hiring people to do all those other things
Keep it up, if you really want to do it, you can!

HI Sarah, I'm back online. Congrats on geting marreid, the wedding cake caracters looked awesome! I wanna do something like that too now
It was a great time at Aardman, but I did not get in on Shaun the sheep as hoped. There's always a hope that they'll still do Purple and Brown, but right now I'm doing my own thing, and it's looking bright so far.

ahhh it's a small world isnt it? I actually met someone a couple of weeks ago who knew Nick at uni. They shared a flat together!(with others)
Ahh well thats ok then.I'd of loved to see some effects but I understand why they keep them under wraps.Cant wait for the next film.
Studio is ok-bit quiet at the moment but i assume its the same for everyone with the current money climate. We have a few plans for things tho.
Lol i know your not crazy but I thought i'd remind you just incase

Good to hear you have got a foot in the door at Aardmans!!
I found The Lord sorry! Thatβs Peter Lord a very pleasant chap to speak to when I met him on an Animation course in Bristol some yearβs back.
I'm dead envious!!
Have you got any tips on what swung it for you?
I guess that the Aardman doors are open for the best talent around
Good luck for the rest of your Work Experience
