thanks so much Shane!! Do you consider yourself more 2d or 3d based?

Well I would say 3D as I am studying to be a product designer, but I still like playing around in 2D everynow and then, and your more then welcome, your art is some of the cooest I've seen on DA.

Thanks for adding me to your list of friends, but looking at your 3d skills, I don't know what you could possibly learn from me, if anything, I should be watching you!

Are you kidding .. your renderings are absolutely amazing, I was blown away by many of your deviations. Even if I dont learn anything from you directly, your work is still inspiring

Thanks, it's kind of you to say so, but mostly my activities are focused around one particular effect or idea and the final image is just a by product. My present project (well and for the last year on and off) is getting a good fluffy effect - and I believe I am getting close. Now what can I make that is fluffy?

Well when I read fluffy and thought 3D, the first thing that popped into my head was Monsters Inc. I believe the fur on Sully was a real breakthrough for animators but a still render may be quite a good learning experience :S As a product designer I deal with plastics and metals 99%of the time so fluffy is quite beyond me. Anyways good luck with it, will be interested to see what comes of it.

The render time works against you, for most materials a low rez render will do to check the colours and such but for this you have to go right down to the last pixel because the devil is in the detail. We'll see, I'm rendering a couple of experiments up at the mo - maybe something to look at by Saturday...

well if it as detailed as you say, the end result should be great ... perhaps closeups wouldn't do such an injustice as they usually do my renderings.

I won't get too excited just yet, I've rendered a lot of pooh in my time - what you see on the gallery is just the tip of the ice burg - the other 9/10 are consigned to the recycle bin!

ahh practice makes perfect my friend .. at least you dont have a lecturer naggin at you. Plus I know you are capable of some cool stuff, it just takes time ... same with everything really.

Sometimes it helps to have someone push you along, in some ways I miss the structured approach of being under tution and I have to generate my own goals and projects (which means, me being generally a lazy sort of person, I choose to do something I think is going to be easy - and occasionally come a cropper as with the splash image which turned out to be seventeen to eighteen times more difficult that I imagined).

InsaneIndustries In reply to davidbrinnen [2005-02-02 02:16:17 +0000 UTC]
hmm I see your point, though the structure you speak of is a hard task in itself ... lecturers and tutors are always busy .. and models I have posted here have usually been done in the span of a few days before due date (sleepless ones at that). Plus class time is usually spent mucking around on side projects/other assignments leaving a small fraction of time to learn a program, make a model, render and animate/route 3d model for hand in. My point being that going at your own pace has its rewards and its drawbacks.

I'll grant you that. My days in college were spent with pencils, charcole and ink - the computers of the day were still at the making images out of $charaters and didn't do colour - so I can't easily imagine what it must be like.
