# About me

My name is Ian and I'm a sophomore at Towson University (Digital Media with a concentration in Game Design).
To quote my favorite critic, I'm what you would call a "misty-eyed 'games-are-art' hippy." I avidly believe that video games are a uniquely enriching experience and that they can be the most powerful tools with which we tell stories. Nothing grinds my gears more than ignorance, particular when it's related to gaming and the lifestyle that surrounds it (see: any stupid protest against games, parents who blame games rather than their own ineptitude, Michael Atkinson). I'm the co-founder of an unknown studio, currently in pre-production of our first game, aiming high and hoping to have an impact on the industry.

And now the obligatory dA thingy:

Current Residence: Towson University
Favourite genre of music: rock/metal
Favourite style of art: ... art in general?
Operating System: Mac OSX, of course.
MP3 player of choice: iPod Touch.
Shell of choice: One that has a ghost in it
Favourite cartoon character: any badass anime character (i.e. Lelouch from Code Geass, Lucy from Elfen Lied, etc.)
Personal Quote: "Speak softly and carry a big stick." - Teddy Roosevelt

No problemo! You've got some hella-rad pixel art

Btw, what are your thoughts on isometric vs top-down (like 3rd gen Pokemon) in terms of movement and aesthetic?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vanmall In reply to Kotsuso [2013-09-25 13:07:28 +0000 UTC]

Looking at my pixel art I obviously enjoy isometric pixel art more but I think when it comes to creating games and animation then top-down and non-isometric pixel art looks better.

No problem! It was totally cool. The friend who got me into Patapon and I are planning on doing something similar for this Otakon. We noticed that the white triangle on the Uberheros makes them look like they're wearing little tuxedos, so we're gonna wear black suits with white shirts underneath, topped off with elaborate masks. Gonna be sweet, haha.

I'm still getting my act together when it comes to anatomy (so I can SORT of free-think/free-hand), but I almost always work from reference photos. I got really lucky with having Hornet as an opponent this round because my kid brother fit the size requirement perfectly. We had a lot of fun being blindfolded and slashing at each other with bits of cardboard, haha.

Kotsuso In reply to mr-tiaa [2013-02-25 02:19:45 +0000 UTC]

Wee bit awkward, actually; parents gave me a hard time for "playing dress-up" (jokingly, of course) and my bro was a bit annoyed at my pickiness when it comes to photos, bahaha!

If there's another art form I'd love to get my hands dirty with it would be sculpture. I've become much too comfortable behind my computer and tablet, haha.

You are pretty talented, and I saw your sculpture with tape. I use mostly paper mache. It is cheap and easy to make. There are many different formulas for paper mache, but I keep it simple.
Take craft glue/elmer's glue and mix it with some water until it is a little bit soupy. If I am making a mask, I use tin foil to get my basic shape by pressing a double folded piece of it over my face until it matches my contours. Then I take a hot glue gun and carefully glue news paper strips over both sides- carefully keeping its shape. With this done, I then take newspaper strips and dip them in the glue, using my fingers to work the glue over the whole strip, while allowing excess glue to fall back into the container. Then I apply the wetted strip to the mask. It is best to let strips overlap slightly, and the more strips over an area, the harder and stiffer it will be when it dries. Do one side of the mask at a time, and use a fan or something to dry it quickly. When it is done, you can add details. Cut out the eye holes, use tin foil or DAS air hardening clay to get shapes. The Das clay you can just mache over when it has set a bit, and this keeps it safe from crumbling. A few layers of acrylic paint can make a nice surface- like leather.
[link] This is a site that has do it yourself mache too- all on the cheap. You could probably make great sculpture, and you should give it a shot.
