Here is an interesting tutorial by ~ buffalographics

This guy's work is awesome and he Does trace! However, he composes everything in PS first. He uses tracing As a Tool to cut down on time but he does all the filling in and shading by hand and if you mess That up, it can look just as bad as if someone had freehand drawn it and not gotten things right.
This guy is a Professional graphic artist.
And just so you can see that he Can draw freehand:

Anyway, read the whole thing as you get time. There are some Very interesting comments about the "tracing is cheating" attitude.
BTW, awesome work, dude. Keep it up! You've got a lot of talent that should never go to waste!

When I spend at least 5 minutes a comment on people's work it is very insulting to be given a traced image that is claimed to be drawn
The below links are to the images I am refering to
near match: [link]
the eye is off: [link]
or is it?: [link]
this is a picture of "FALLEN" [link] by [link] Majestic.
Now first off, I am not stupid, this image was very very traced and I've got the PS iamges to prove it. Now when images are traced many people flip between the base image and tracing paper (which we can see is tracing paper from the picture alone). So my review thread is one dedicated to honest feedback, a nice change from many threads. These are the images I used and what they all mean
page to look at their progress and may adjsut it every once in a while, throwing things slightly off.
So yes the eyes and eyebrows are off....or are they? Now look at the overlayed comparison between the cd cover eye and the "drawn" eye. Damn! They match up perfectly! So I guess the eye was traced and the paper must have moved sometime before moving to do the eyebrow.
The lesson, don't ask em to do a serious comment which takes time to do on a piece when you're not taking it seriously yourself. Also, don't put and I quote from Majestic's main page "hey I'm a good artist,
So I took an image I found of the cd cover of Evanesence which is strikingly similar to the "drawn" one and put it into PS. The first thing I tried was transforming (as well as opacifying) the real cd cover image over the "drawn" one. Blammo, near perfect match..
So what can be said against my accusation of a near perfect match? Look at the eyes and eyebrows, they don't quite match up! Well true but lets nto forget that as people trace they flip the how come I don't get a lot of page views..." up, it only makes me think less of you.

look, when I see four parts of a picture that match up perfectly I do think something is fishy. Maybe I'm wrong and you did draw it but I matched them up very very closely in PS with the evanescence cd cover and found that there were at least four areas that matched. The lines on both sides of the cheek/jaw are perfect and the eyes (both of them) match up perfectly. So maybe I'm wrong and you did draw it, in which case congratulations ^ ^

1 thing I didn't trace... lol... thats it, and that paper I used its not tracing paper, it is paper from my Canson Sketch pad. I had to crop the image to take out the dark outlines that are on the edges of my pictures most of the time. When I drew this picture I kept it in proportion to the image I drew it from. I can't help it that I happen to be able to draw a damn picture to look as it did in the image I drew it from. I mean damn from now on just for you I'll draw my pictures 2x larger just for you, actually I won't, I draw how I fucken like and if it turns out pretty damn well, near perfect match even I geuss I should feel great about my abilities as a young aspiring artist.
I personally hate tracing and wouldn't think to do it. Because I hate it, not to mention traced pictures look horrible.
**Babbles on about how picture was drawn**
I drew this picture at school between 1st and 2nd period. 1st period I set the image up. Put those lines on the top and bottom, then I drew a line going down the center. After drawing that line in the center I made the two lines where the eyes are located inside of and asked some friends whether it seemed right. Then I made lines so as to have her face correctly spaced(a problem with me) then I began drawing the shape of her head. First I gots me two blue colored pencils, Off second period. My teacher wasn't there and neither was most of the class(skip day) and so I had to go into the architecture teachers section(think thats what it was). Then he cut off the lights and played a movie, thats when I finished the image by going over the face, doing her lips and her eyes, and a long session with her hair and coloring... lol I don't know what this proves but it sure as hell satisfied me... Fact is...
I DIDN'T TRACE SHIT good day
did you like my friday, wasn't it just interesting...lol

not sure what to say really. you've got a lot of potential all over the place, good animal drawings, good people drawings... but i get the feeling you're not quite sure what you wanna work with style-wise. a lot of the people all seem to be different styles. and that's cool, cuz learning and practicing other styles helps you improve your own. so, unforetunately, i can't reall say much other than i know when you pick something, it'll be great! hope your search for a comfortable style for you works out well.
