Hey Matt, I have a tip and something else
In Gimp under the tool options dialogue, there's a thingy that looks like a floppy disk with an arrow pointing outwards. Have any paint tool (brush, pencil, eraser, etc.) selected from the toolbox then click on that thingy. Pick one of the options from the list and have fun
