Hey mate, hows it going? I don't know if you remember me but I met you at Drawn from Life lifedrawing class. I just thought you might like to know that I have started going to another drawing class where there are teachers who have studied at the Julian Ashton school of fine art. They are awesome and have been teaching me heaps.
Here is a link to their website.

Check it out to see if you like it and I'd love to see you at one of the classes if you are interested.

Hi mate, the courses do look good. I'm pretty good with figure drawing now, but the perspective and painting courses are something I'd love to do, time and money permitting. Also, the long pose sessions sound good too; one of the reasons I stopped coming to Drawn from Life was that I felt the pose times just weren't long enough. You can't do a model justice in two minutes, or even five.
Thanks Nick!

Moriadat In reply to erosarts [2010-01-04 10:16:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the exposure!

Interesting that you should mention the odd choice of narrator; originally the POV character was Oak, but once I realised the dark places he was going to be visiting, I thought it needed a less downbeat POV. I didn't know if I wanted to commit myself to something that bleak and depressing for what has turned out to be a ten year stretch. Oak also needed help finding his way back up out of the dark ... that's why Calgary got thrown in there.

Thanks again, you've made my day

erosarts In reply to Moriadat [2010-01-04 11:50:36 +0000 UTC]

Invariably, everyone has a reason for doing things the way they do. And I really don't have the stomach for "darkness" anymore, like I did when I was younger and more pro-angst, so I can totally relate to your motives.

You mention Oak was the original POV character and I saw something about some of the beginning being redrawn somewhere in your notes, and I'm thinking (and I'm terrible with names, so bear with me) the scene where he hides in his client's closet and witnesses that guy coming in the window -- That's what stands out to me as being the spot where the story has the wrong narrator. Was that originally done from Oak's POV ? because that would totally explain it.

I'm glad to have brought brightness to your day. "Burning Oak" is totally worth checking out! I still need to get my morning fix of it in!

Moriadat In reply to erosarts [2010-01-05 02:48:03 +0000 UTC]

That scene where Oak hides in the closet is more or less the spot where the redrawn stuff segued back into the original art. That may be why it stands out.

Oh man if I had your dedication when drawing my comics (Having your skill would be nice aswell )

How long do you usualy spend on a page?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Moriadat In reply to ZombieToaster [2009-06-21 12:55:32 +0000 UTC]

It can vary. Usually action-packed sequences can be drawn more quickly, with less detail. Slower scenes demand more detail and take longer.

There have been times when I've drawn a page a day. At the other extreme, page 99 of Burned Oak took me 5 years to draw. Depends on the subject matter, depends whether I've 'got it' on that day or not. You know what I mean by 'got it', don't you? Some days you got it, some you don't.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZombieToaster In reply to Moriadat [2009-06-21 13:00:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah absolutely.

And I can see what you mean about action being easier to get away with less. But at the same time. It can be a lot harder to plan out. So shouldnt it kinda even out in the end?

When Ive drawn comics its usualy been a half to one page per day. But I've never really done action. Im not too comfortable either drawing or writing it. But I should try it sometime.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Moriadat In reply to ZombieToaster [2009-06-21 13:31:16 +0000 UTC]

You're right, action IS a lot harder to plan out. Quiet scenes are much easier to plan. So it all evens out I guess.

What I should spend more time on is composition. I've just been looking through some Steve McNiven art and damn, he's good at it.
