No worries! I am planning a Female Hero's Shade pre-death cosplay for 2016 so your progress pics are going to help me greatly. I hope I can make it look as good as yours!

Yeah. I love challenging myself and it will be my first full armour piece. (I am making a Xerneas gijinka cosplay for 2015 and plan to have some armour but nothing like a full suit of armour).
I am in no way a man or look like a man so I don't know if I could pull off a crossplay and I am not really willing to wear contacts so I think the red eye is out of the question. (I tried to wear them once before for a cosplay and hurt my eye).
I believe I have saved every single picture you posted of your armour so far so I think I will have a good starting point. I will definitely drop you a question if I am having problems understanding your pics/ the direction you were going with it, but from what I saw I think I will be fine. I am going to start working on it next year. Right now is just the concept phase with countless drawings and references and pattern making.
Thanks for your kind words and cosplay on!

Making armour can be very frustrating, and very very rewarding at the same time! Do some test runs in pieces you've constructed, since mobility and joints suffer the most if things are too big/small. I love that you're challenging yourself to make it! That Xerneas cosplay sounds like it'll be a lot of fun too.
As for body shape, armour can be built in ways to help you look opposite gender (it works both ways). But you know your body best, and having armour fit -you- well, can make a average costume, into an amazing one! I also can't wear contacts because of extremely dry eyes, I understand those woes. People have never discriminated me for that fact though, so don't feel bad about it.
Yup! I might post some new techniques too, with foam/fabric ways of making armour. See pros and cons while I test it out this year, haha.
Take care!

It's definitely going to be frustrating and a lot of cuts and burns and a lot of test runs but I have until april next year to get Xerneas out and april the year after that to get heros shade out so I think I will be getting a lot of practice in and be able to create multiple versions of both and be able to test them out from time to time.
Armour is very tricky and very deceiving at the same time.
Contacts can be a pain and I wore some for about 3 hours but my pupils don't dilate and so I got an extremely bad migraine by the end of it, besides I like to flaunt my different coloured eyes.
I do follow your facebook group as well so I have been keeping an eye on your Volga helmet for a while. Seems to be going well so far!
Cosplay really is about trial and error and finding what works for you and what is most efficient.

That's a good amount of time, especially if you can work on it a bit every day or so. The mistakes are what eat up the worst amount of time, but once you have the pattern straight, the construction can go very fast. Armor is deceiving, but I still would choose it over fabric heavy costumes any day, haha. There is something nice about the shapes, and techniques used to make it work. Also all the different materials you can substitute, while fabric is always fabric...
Ah, thanks! I've been sick a bit recently, so I had to take a break for about a week, I'm hoping to get back to patterning the chestplate, and collar area next. A lot of Volga's armor is organic shaped, which is proving to be a new challenge, hopefully it turns out well.

I think your armor will look great when its finished.
Very true. I have done a lot of fabric heavy cosplays in the past and they are a pain at times. I do like to experiment with various different materials. Love exploring new fabrics.
Practice makes perfect is not just a kitchy phrase, It takes a lot of trial and error to get anywhere. I have made many cosplays and I have definitely gotten better.

So true. Maybe I should try out more fabrics in the future, as long as I can find good sales so it doesn't hurt my wallet, haha.
What type of fabrics do you like working with most? I find I have a lot of trouble with stretch, or satins and other slippery materials. My hand sewing is far too slow, and would take years to finish one project. :/

Polyester is the worst fabric to work with if you are a beginner, do not use it unless you are used to slippery ass fabric that will hate you and bit you in the butt. I used it for my victini cosplay and I found it was slightly see through and by the end of the first day it was falling apart every time I moved. It did not agree with me at all. It was even a 70% polyester, 30% rayon blend and the bugger still hated me. By the third day the outfit just fell apart on me.
I gotta love Rayon and Nylon blends, the hems from those hold very well and they are super comfy and breathable which is important when working in layers and while wearing corsets. Super easy to hand sew as well. If you need practice use some felt for different stitches, I used it to practice when I first started many years ago.

Geez, just noticed how long this message was sent, I'm terribly sorry.
I agree that polyester is very annoying to work with, I think satin is the worst though. I always preferred the cottons, since they could breathe, and you could normally dye them in a pinch. I know a lot of people who just use whatever fabric they see, or that's on sale, so I can understand the woes of not being able to afford really nice fabrics too!

No worries! Our messages are like super spread out.
I just recently (like a month ago) bought fabric for my 2 cosplays that I am doing this year. Biggest piece of advice i can give you is when you shop for fabric or even clothes stick your hand out and just walk up and down the aisles until you find something that feels nice and comfy and could work for your cosplay. Its the way I pick out all my clothes and all my clothes are super comfy and by doing this for as long as I have I have been able to find clothes that fit me well and feel comfortable without even trying them on.
It's important to find the right fabric, stretchy fabric is more than likely going to be exclusively form-fitting while fabrics like chiffon and silk will just hang down and be loose.
I just bought this one fabric. It was like a lace and super stretchy. Extremely soft and extremely hard to work with. Stretchy fabric that is see through is hard to work with.
The con where I am wearing my 2 new cosplays to is coming up on the 16th. Thats less than a week! I will definitely be taking lots of photos of both and I will be putting them up here and possibly on my tumblr so keep an eye out for them!
You almost done Volga?

Awesome, I hope you were able to get everything done on time for the con! It sounds like crunch time is around for most of us cosplayers. Myself included, haha. Thanks for the advice too.
Volga has been pushed back, so I'll get working on him after the end of this month (May), since I have my main convention coming up, and Zelda Symphony I was invited too the week after. I have to focus on other costumes at the moment.

I finished all my cosplays in time! It was a great feeling to finish them a week before the con and actually see it laid out. I didn't really get a good picture of the one but I got some professional photos done of my Xerneas so thats exciting.
Already planning out 2017 cosplay, only doing one and its going to include a lot of trial and error so I am going to start working on pieces of it now while I build my 2016 cosplays.
Good luck working on your cosplays. if you need anymore advice don't hesitate to ask.

I barely managed to finish my one costume, but it was wearable at least, haha. I'll be fixing up all the problems for next year, for a proper photoshoot. I'm glad you were able to get some professional photos of your Xerneas! I hope they turned out well.
I'm looking forward to starting my 2016 now, I definitely don't want to rush... but I say that every year. *sigh*

hahahaha I am already working on my 2017 cosplay. I have my cosplays laid out for the next 3 years so I think I am good. I had so many comments on the Xerneas and even had one kid throw a pokeball at me and had this other kid follow me around during 2 cons where I wore it. It was crazy. Its nice to actually have your cosplay recognized once in a while. I am worried about that for one of my 2016 ones as I am doing spritzee and its a less known pokemon but the one for 2017 is a legendary and going to (hopefully) include articulating wings and so I expect to get lots of pictures of it and I will definitely be getting professional photos of that one done and be entering into contests with it.

Sounds like a typical cosplayer plans, haha. I also have several years planned out, but I usually tackle them in order. Hoping to hit Nintendo World in Sept, so need to work on my Zelda stuff.
Wearing less known costumes isn't bad! I wore something fairly new to North America, but has been out in Japan for a while. Most people didn't know what series we were from, but it was worthwhile to wear. It's about having fun.

My first year I dressed as Xion from kingdom hearts but I did a casual one and no one knew what I was until I said it.
My next few years and did Zoroark, Victini, and Ponyta as well as Reshiram, Darkrai and now Trevenant and Xerneas.
The only times I have been recognized were when I dressed up as Victini because it was pretty obvious cause butt wings are pretty obvious and of course now Xerneas. I love dressing up and working on something I love for hours upon hours. Its just slightly more rewarding to me for people to recognize what I am.
I went to Nintendo World a few years back and it was great I bought a lot of stuff there. My mother went to it back in february and bought more stuff for me.
I am a pokemon collector. I have a crap ton of pokemon merchandise. I may post my collection at a later date but that would take a really long time considering I am moving to my new condo soon and need to reorganize everything. Eventually I will post it.
