Hi, I'm wondering if you use anything to waterproof your pieces after they are stained?
π: 0 β©: 1
OsborneArts In reply to smashy-bone [2013-07-16 19:33:47 +0000 UTC]
Hi!Β Yes, we use a sealer on our masks, front and back so they can be worn, cleaned with soap and water and not have problems.

How difficult would you say mask making is?
I can see its definitely rewarding.
What materials do you use other than leather? ever try ceramics?
π: 0 β©: 1
OsborneArts In reply to Jesus-lizard [2012-06-02 23:06:55 +0000 UTC]
Mask making by us was started by my husband Kenn who taught me. I would say it is not an easy thing to pick up and do and it can be frustrating. I am still learning, and have started a few more intricate works recently. But, all in all, it is definately rewarding and having a talent for drawing and having a vision for making something totally different that what is out there is worth every smile and good word. Kenn used to teach ceramics years ago and we used to turn wood, corion, metal, and whatever we could find to make pens, bowls, etc. Kenn also paints with acrylics and draws when the mood hits him.
Thanks so much for asking!!
Becky

I love the classiness and antiquity your masks have. I haven't worked much with dyes yet but I plant to get more into it! I'm trying to get a job at Tandy Leather Factory and it's looking good so hopefully that will help my leather crafting as well!!!
Can't wait to see more of your stuff! I think my favorite piece of yours is the gryphon mask/helmet. LOVE THAT ONE!

Wow, thanks so much! I (Becky) love the dyes, they are so rich and blend together if needed. End up forgetting gloves though and have colorful hands most of the time! Good luck on the Tandy job, that would be cool! Kenn is the mastermind behind the gryphon mask/helmet. I am secretly hoping that one doesn't sell as I enjoy having it! Keep in touch, it's always nice to have someone to talk to with similar interests.

Hee hee .
Yeah I'm going to be working on a lion mask soon...with a huge twist! But I'm wondering about a future mask I want to make: a Chinese fu guardian. The mask concept will be very large and kind of heavy so would you recommend that I make belt straps to hold it to the head rather than ribbon or pipe cleaners? That's what I'm thinking...

OsborneArts In reply to Draikairion [2012-02-18 12:33:21 +0000 UTC]
Wow, time is flying by. I would say that leather strap would be better, we usually use it when the mask is heavier. Makes it much more comfortable and holds more securely. Hope things are good!!

hey there, sorry if this is posted somewhere else but i was just curious as to what kind of sealer you use.
π: 0 β©: 1
OsborneArts In reply to keoven87 [2011-12-17 15:08:43 +0000 UTC]
It really depends on the finish we are going for, mostly over dye and stain we use Pro Clear from Springfield Leather. It is similar to the old Tandy Super Shene and has a water like consistency which soaks into the leather nicely. If we want a more soft matte finish we use Fiebing's Bag-Kote thinned with water. If we do a painted project we finish with a half and half mix of Liquitex Gloss Varnish and Liquitex Matte Varnish but adjust based on the look we are going for. We use all brush on water based finishes for ease of clean up and to keep fumes in our studio to a minimum.

hmmm...so how do you waterproof them??
π: 0 β©: 1
OsborneArts In reply to keoven87 [2011-12-18 19:55:26 +0000 UTC]
The sealer makes them water resistant, not waterproof. They can take slightly damp but would not recommend immersing them in water.

Amazing leather work my friend! I really love all the masks that you have done!Keep being awesome!
Quick question as I have worked only a small amout with leather. You say 5-6 oz leather, does this mean the thickness? Do you stiffen the leather at all with something?
π: 0 β©: 1
OsborneArts In reply to Templar135 [2011-12-16 14:47:15 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so much! The 5-6 oz corresponds to the thickness, each ounce of thickness corresponds to 1/64 inches. We use vegetable tanned leather which stiffens on drying and heat, and sealer which leaves it flexible but holds its shape.
