& now for a random comment have you played Metal Gear or Devil May Cry? (any of them?)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MeshWeaver In reply to ParagonOfVirtue [2013-05-20 16:53:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, I haven't played Metal Gear yet, but I'm SUPER curious about it In fact there's a new "Legendary" collection coming out in a month or two, with all the MGS games and some extras I can't remember, so I'm planning on getting that one and "marathoning" the whole series like I did with Mass Effect From everything I've seen&heard so far, it sounds like an amazing series

Oh, did you hear about "Remember Me"? That also looks pretty awesome

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ParagonOfVirtue In reply to MeshWeaver [2013-05-20 17:24:11 +0000 UTC]

See, I'm curious about MGS too I heard it's got this really deep & interesting story, but...
I've just never been into shooters My aim sucks, for one

But if they're making a bundle Maybe I'll give it a shot for once
I was also considering getting the bundle of HD remakes of PS2-Tomb Raider

I think I heard about "Remember Me" once, but then I forgot it 'cause they where talking about DMC5 &... well, I guess you know the controversy about it...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MeshWeaver In reply to ParagonOfVirtue [2013-05-20 18:07:01 +0000 UTC]

I don't, actually I really only know the name "Devil May Cry", so if there was controversy over one of the titles I probably missed it all

The thing I've always heard about MGS is that you don't necessarily have to go around shooting enemy units, since it's mostly about stealth. Apparently you can even go through the entire game without actually killing anyone My aim kinda sucks sometimes as well, though - I'm constantly getting pwned when playing Uncharted 2 online, but it's still lots of fun so I don't really care
TBH though I'm not really into shooters either. I mean, I've played a couple FPS games from time to time (mostly Star Wars Battlefront 2, though it's a, uh... *ahem* downloaded version Planning on getting the real one on Steam eventually!) but I'm not really that interested in them. What I like about Uncharted or MassEffect is that there's more to it than just shooting at stuff. MassEffect has the whole Star Trek sci-fi RPG thing going for it, while Uncharted has the puzzles and platforming/parkour (not to mention it's very IndianaJones-like)

I've been kinda curious about Tomb Raider as well, though mostly the newest one for PS3; looks like it's similar to the Uncharted games

ParagonOfVirtue In reply to MeshWeaver [2013-05-20 19:50:54 +0000 UTC]

(a long rant just appeared out of nowhere )

Stealth, huh? well I'm a big fan of the stealth/predator mode in Arkham Asylum/City I like it even better than the free-flow combat, & I'm hooked with that one too

"Apparently you can even go through the entire game without actually killing anyone "
Well, that's good to know It's another reason I love the Arkham series, Batman never kills anyone, he's a hero dAmn it!

Honestly, I felt guilty in Final Fantasy when suddenly I realized I'd killed a whole lot of enormous beautiful turtles, that had probably lived in peace for centuries, for a very small chance of one of them giving me a lot of money... & before that I'd been killing their babies

Tbh, I've played many pirated games before But just because it's practically impossible to find a legal copy of anything in my country, I'd have to buy it all overseas, & I only have those 400$ a year, & I don't even gain my own money yet I'll try to get the originals with my own money when I have it, if only to support the creators...

Ahem I read some review that the new Tomb Raider is similar to Uncharted. Apparently, it's a new origin story for Lara Croft, which seems to have been received better than with DMC5 (I'll get to that one later). I haven't played Uncharted, but I played Tomb Raider: Legend for PS2 & I loved it chasing pieces of an ancient artifact all over the world, lots of jumping around, finding trophies & all that
I also played one fro PSOne, The Last Revelation, I think it was the fourth... & it was friggin' hard Maybe that's why it was so fun

"I really only know the name "Devil May Cry", so if there was controversy over one of the titles I probably missed it all "
Oh well, to make a long story... not so long they controversy is that they completely remade the character design for no reason apparently, the creators thought "The old Dante is not cool anymore"...
So they turned the badass, pretty white-haired boy into a smoking, drinking, apathetic-looking black-haired boy...
So the message is "Hey kids! change Pizza for cigarettes! guaranteed to kill you 10x faster"?
The fans bitched up & down for this but the creators apparently didn't give a dAmn...
& they insisted on making it part of the DMC series, so it seems it's going to be the official design from now on...
They also made it an origin story, & changed the details of his "lineage"...

The game has gotten more fans after it's release, since apparently the gameplay was good... as good as all the prior DMCs that is...
So I personally have no reason to play it but I planned to watch some walkthroughs to see if they've at least left some of his personality intact...

"A wild rant has appeared!"

"MeshWeaver used Reply!"

**flash flash**

"It's super effective!"

LOL, you just sent me on a 20-some-minute TVTropes walk It's kinda strange, though, that they would change an established character design like that for seemingly no reason. I mean it's a bit of a "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" situation, like Microsoft and the constant rearranging of the Control Panel Or like making Link in The Legend of Zelda - Skyward Sword (great game) right-handed instead of the traditional left; that caused quite a bit of stir amongst the fans, though TBH that particular change is completely understandable since most people are right-handed, and you motion-control the sword with the Wiimote+
The only instance where it's a bit weird is in the previous instalment, Twilight Princess. Since it was a port from the Gamecube to the Wii, all they did was X-mirror the whole game so that Link is right-handed. Only problem is now the sun rises in the west, which is incredibly confusing when you're trying to figure out which way is North. I ended up going South many, many times before I remembered that it was flipped

"Honestly, I felt guilty in Final Fantasy when suddenly I realized I'd killed a whole lot of enormous beautiful turtles, that had probably lived in peace for centuries, for a very small chance of one of them giving me a lot of money... "

Haha, yeah, that's always a bit of a bummer. Actually, it reminds me of a instance when I was playing the first MassEffect. There's this planet you can land on at one point (horrible green textures, but that's beside the point), and I'm driving around in the armoured tank/exploration vehicle (aka the Mako) and there are "tribes" of monkey-creatures spread out over the map in bunches. So I'm driving around, not hitting any of them (sometimes coming to a screeching halt to avoid one), scaling mountains, shooting at annoying Geth (AI robots), and in general being awesome
Then I approach a Geth base/mine/thing and park the Mako (while being surrounded my monkeys), do stuff, and then climb back into the Mako and start to drive off, ready to get back to the Normandy SR-1. Little did I know a monkey-creature had walked in front of the Mako and as I started to drive off, I ran it over. I couldn't see it at all, the Mako was blocking the camera view, and then I get "+5 Renegade" in the corner of the screen and Tali'Zorah saying something like "That was a little brutal, Shepard" and I see a monkey-thing limply fly off to the side.
I was all "NOOOOO! I didn't want to hit the monkey-thing! Why was it in front of the Mako?! I didn't want any Renegade points! "

"LOL, you just sent me on a 20-some-minute TVTropes walk "
Errr... oops I should be more careful where I put links to TVTropes...
WARNING: more TV Tropes links ahead

Changing laterality is a pretty minor change overall (even if the sun rises in the west ), easy to get over. Honestly, if it had just been the hair & clothes they changed, I wouldn't have given a dAmn...
Many "defenders" say that "he still has white hair when using the Devil Trigger, so it's still the same," the problem is not the hair color, geez!

But as it turns out, 80-90% of what I've seen him doing so far would just look out of character in the original Dante. To the point I just consider him a different guy with the same name ...

I'm terribly sorry to be using you as a scapegoat for my frustrations I'm usually not one to go "They Changed It Now It Sucks" .
I actually liked the Prince of Persia movie, even though it had nothing to do with the game I just took it as a Fanfic with a high budget, & they admitted it had nothing to do with the games & did not affect them in any way...
But these guys... the only thing they did after people complained was chage it from a "continuity reboot" to an "alternate universe"... or something...
Which changes nothing if they insist on going on with this "continuity"...
I should stop bitching about it now, shouldn't I?

About that little story... some things like that happen in inFamous, since everything you can do to enemies, you can do to innocent civilians...
& the civilians seem to be stupid enough to run to the middle of a gang war (that is: me vs the gangs), & I've accidentally kicked a few of them a few meters in the air luckily, I can also heal them right after ... Batman doesn't have problems like this...
No, he has completely different ones...

"WARNING: more TV Tropes links ahead"

Yay!

"I'm terribly sorry to be using you as a scapegoat for my frustrations "

Haha, nah, don't worry about it We all need to vent our fan-frustrations sometimes, you know? Plus it's actually pretty informative - for instance I didn't know the Prince of Persia film was unrelated to the games, having never played or watched either of them - but I do have the remastered trilogy sitting next to my PS3, waiting to be played I've just been too PS3-busy replaying MassEffect as FemShep and playing Uncharted2; Among Thieves online

"& the civilians seem to be stupid enough to run to the middle of a gang war (that is: me vs the gangs), & I've accidentally kicked a few of them a few meters in the air "

LOL, good ol' NPC AI My brother actually told me about that in regards to inFamous. Or at least, inFamous2, which is the one he played and is now sitting next to my PS3, waiting to be played by me. I'm actually really looking forward to that one, more so than PoP. From what I've seen and heard it looks very Heroes-like, and it's one of my favourite shows Haven't watched it in a while...

ParagonOfVirtue In reply to MeshWeaver [2013-05-30 03:02:25 +0000 UTC]

"for instance I didn't know the Prince of Persia film was unrelated to the games"
Actually, it has one... no two things from the game: 1) the main character is (supposedly) the Prince of Persia (well, duh), & 2) the are "Sands of Time" in a huge hourglass which uses a dagger as key...
& I think there was also a princess somewhere...
I've actually only played the first one (the one that spawned the Movie), but it got me locked in front of my PS2 as with Shadow of the Colossus

& you know what else? I haven't played inFamous 2 (or was it inFAMOUS? ) Even though I won the first one the very same day you posted that reply...
No, really, I won it now I completely understand why TV Tropes says at least 20 tropes wouldn't be in the examples page if it wasn't for the ending
Now, I would just love to play the 2nd (it would actually be our very first game in common ), but I can't, since a friend is holding it right now, until he wins it & my sister finishes the 1st one...
So I'll have to aim for the Platinum in Arkham City meanwhile... since I won that one just a few days before
Yup, it was a productive week

Btw, I've been watching some playthroughs of DmC (5), & so far, the 2nd Dante is only about 57% out-of-character which is still quite enough to qualify as a distinct character, but not as bad as in he trailers For some reason watching those makes me wanna play the previous games

PS: Something funny happened right after I read this message 3 days ago...
Reality hit me like a truck on the forehead, & I realized I actually had homework to do
Which took me an excruciating amount of time because, guess what? I managed to kick myself back into TV Tropes...
& then TV Tropes managed to simultaneously kick me into FF.net & send me in a wiki-walk through the PPC-wiki ...
& the moral of this story is: be wary of following the links I put up

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MeshWeaver In reply to ParagonOfVirtue [2013-05-31 17:39:50 +0000 UTC]

LOL I'll get around to inFamous2 soon - I just have to stop playing Uncharted2 so much and put the disc in the console

"PS: Something funny happened right after I read this message 3 days ago...
Reality hit me like a truck on the forehead, & I realized I actually had homework to do"

Haha, I actually had a similar-ish situation last week - I was supposed to be writing something for a birthday card and I somehow kept ending up on wikis and gaming news articles and BlenderArtists

Also, 57% out of character isn't that bad, really. I wonder what L would think of that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ParagonOfVirtue In reply to MeshWeaver [2013-05-31 21:36:52 +0000 UTC]

Heh :greeting: I had a problem like that choosing between Arkham City & inFAMOUS... & look what happened, I won them almost at the same time
Count on the good'ol wikis to keep up the procrastination

Uh oh... rant mode pumping up *wild flock of TV Tropes links appeared!*

About the percentages... That's pretty hard to determine, actually It's like saying something is 57% cooler... Which is actually what the creators thought they where doing. Turns out, things are not as simple as that...

Is not that they made this Donte lame, it's just they made him too different...
They tried that in the second game, making him more stoic & serious, & though his looks in that game where about the coolest in the series, if there's one thing the fans generally agree on is that the second game was the worst in the series...

There's also the fact that they made a very Microsoft decision by changing the things nobody had ever complained about without even asking...
Seeing you've played Mass Effect 3, you're probably heard the fandom has a similar controversy over the ending. & what did the creators do? They bent over backwards to try to please them. What did the creators of DmC do in light of the huge internet counterattack they received from their first trailer? They changed the status from continuity reboot to alternate universe ...

Not content with that they put an "Easter Egg" about the white hair thing, which a lot of fans took as them outright giving them the finger ...
& even after all that, the creator still insist it's all because of the hair color ...
& got called out on it, naturally...

Now, for what I've actually seen in the walkthroughs...
The youngest Dante (DMC3) in the original continuity was impulsive & pretty inmature , but never an outright rebellious, uncaring, teenager , like the alternate... Although one thing they did to help their case was quiting his smoking... Until they replaced it with inferred alcohol abuse & outright promiscuity...
Which is not to say I hate him I've seen a bit of his softer side & he's kind of growing into me... as a completely different character...

I dunno, I think what bugs me the most is that the creators insist these games are related...

MeshWeaver In reply to ParagonOfVirtue [2013-06-01 00:01:09 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I have indeed played Mass Effect 3 (it was amazing), and I've indeed heard about the huge controversy the ending generated. I can't say I'm part of that group though - the ending confused me initially, but afterwards I was like "Well, that's the ending they wanted to make, so that's how it ends, and that's that" and in fact I'm quite looking forward to seeing it again And maybe this time I'll be able to shoot The Illusive Man before he shoots Capt. Anderson - hit the wrong button the first time and Anderson got shot TIM was freakin' annoying.

aaaaaand now I just spent half an hour on TVTropes I'm now calling this "The Reply that Crawled Through Time".

For some reason I can't think of any characters or game-events that have gone through the same stuff, other than ME3. I know I've played a couple, but my mind is completely blank
Anyway, what I found most funny about the 57% comment was that it reminded me of L's tendency to assign percentages to things. He was awesome Why'd Rem have to kill him, dammit?

"Although one thing they did to help their case was quiting his smoking... Until they replaced it with inferred alcohol abuse & outright promiscuity..."

That actually made me laugh out loud

That's the thing when something becomes controversial... as soon as someone starts bitching, suddenly most everyone has something to say about it, even if they wouldn't have cared otherwise

"aaaaaand now I just spent half an hour on TVTropes I'm now calling this "The Reply that Crawled Through Time"."
LOL only half an hour? that's actually quite impressive; most people spend full hours, days, & some even the rest of their lives in there

"what I found most funny about the 57% comment was that it reminded me of L's tendency to assign percentages to things."
L is in the examples page of that trope actually Including a comment that he's always 99% sure about those percentages he was just too cool to live

LOL well I'm actually not sure if it was half an hour or an hour, I kinda lost track

I just checked the Too Cool to Live page, and surprisingly enough L isn't mentioned in the Death Note section. Naomi Misora (the FBI-agent's wife) is though - she probably was too cool to live. I was actually pretty disappointed when Light killed her off, she seemed like an awesome character.
