I'm a wee bit confused by this post. What is it that you see? Do you know me in some indirect way or from some other place, and I linked you to this page or a friend did?

o.O

So nice of you to ask. The past 30 days have been like an eternity for me. I'm not quite ready to fully explain what went on, but I'm still writing a hefty journal entry about it.

...thank you~

(heh. I never would have thought that such a small thing as finding your comment in a friend's journal and replying to it would cause such an interesting chain of events)

I appreciate both your comments in response to me, as well as the fact that you have chosen to put me on your watchlist as well *smiles*

(deviantART ate my original response to this comment! T^T; but I'm going to send this even though it's late...)

-sigh- heh hee... this comment has been sitting in my inbox for awhile now and it is only now that I come up with a suitable reply...

Anyway, Thank you for unexpectedly showing up and leaving a comment for my friend- you didn't have to do that and I appreciate it~

-let's see now, about the whole text formatting thing... I'll give you a couple tags that I've seen work for DA comments (you can use even more HTML tags in your journal entries on here and obviously, use almost ALL tags when you're subscribed...)

there are these two that I know and love:

[sub] keep in mind to use the for these tags- this one gives you subscript text

[blockquote] this is good for emphasizing text by leaving a lot of space and making an indentation around what it is that you wish to say

nowadays, I often use these in conjunction with the standard italics and bold and what have you- I like to put certain stresses and emphasis on my points, and it is so hard to do that over the internet... just communicating by sending text is so limiting
*prefers interacting with people in person most of the time*

-whoo...

take care~

I still find it hard to make those text-modifying tricks a part of my regular messages. It just doesn't feel natural. I wish they had a ctrl+i/b etc system here.

Thanks for the compliment. Artists have got to work together in order to be able to keep going. It can be rough out there, but if we listen to each other, then it makes the job a lot easier. Just remember to listen to everyone with a grain of salt.

I totally agree. That's one reason I'm sticking with DA. The more I hang around other artists, the more I'm motivated to keep doing art.

Great Stuff here!!! I think the comic art is great for self publication or internet publication. The horse is great for galleries or frame shops sold as a print or original! The horse art is more marketable than the comic art.

Best of luck!

Shin00bi In reply to WhimsicalcreationsLB [2006-10-19 01:12:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah as far as gallery-worthy stuff. Thanks.

You might notice the way I did the horse, is still somewhat in a comic book style, it's just the subject matter that not so much comic book.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Some of my favourite comic book artists are also painters and gallery-type artists, so it's not like I don't want to do both.

Hey Shin00bi! How long did it take for you to finally draw the way you do? I'm in awe off some of the stuff you do but I'm also envious...So how long? This will give me a little incentive to try to catch up to you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shin00bi In reply to thEaquireD [2006-10-17 07:52:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks thEaquireD, there's really no better compliment.

I think the question should be more like "what did you do to get that good"

I don't want to discourage you by saying, I've been drawing my whole life, which I have.

It wasn't until very recently that I started to pick things up.

Submit yourself to your favourite artists. Copy their work (not trace), for practice. If you go for realism, copy photographs. Oh and don't copy me by the way, I'm still a newbie. I'd recommend buying some purty comic books and just referencing them.

I practice by copying pictures from comic books.

All the deviations you see are done free hand though. But that wouldn't be possible without the practice that goes into my sketchbook.

I really do mean it wasn't until recently that I became "good" - I also don't think I'm very good at all.

Dissatisfaction has a lot to do with it too.

A lot of my favourite artists in the comic industry freely admit that they copy. There's no shame in it. I mean, that's why there are styles like "manga" out there.

Speaking of which, I think it's been a little too long since the last time I copied J.Scott Campbell. I think I'm gonna go do that for practice, because I'm getting sick of fiddling with the lines I can't seem to draw right now. He makes women look the best.

I hope that helps. I will help answer any of your questions in the future. Feel free to note me, or post comments etc. I love helping other people in art.

If you copy, bear in mind it's ok to combine several elements into one character for example. Like referencing one artist's depiction of lips, another's eyes, ears, position etc.

I have quite a few full sketch-books. It's a hassle to scan them and upload them to scraps, but I think I might.

Really in all honesty, a lot of drawings suck, you just don't see those ones here, not even in scraps.

Eventually the freehand drawing without reference will just come to you.

Shin00bi In reply to Shin00bi [2006-10-17 07:55:41 +0000 UTC]

I meant to say "Really in all honesty, a lot of my drawings suck."

Oh and to help give you an idea that it doesn't take long to be good.

My friend started drawing about 2 years ago, and he's actually damn good.

It's not about the time, just the practice.

All the time I spent drawing as younger kid don't really affect how good I draw now.

Well I would, except I have to kind of go to work 5 days a week

But I get what you mean. I'll have to isolate myself and just give myself "me-time'" more often. Like when I was a kid.
