I haven't actually heard much Gorecki, but I absolutely love him.

I've heard the two string quartets recorded by Kronos and the Symphony No. 3 with Dawn Upshaw, which made me cry the first time I heard it after reading the liner notes. The notes give you this great emotional buildup of the situation of its debue.

Mesiere is on my to-get list.

Any recommendations?

My strongest composer recommendation to anyone right now is Peteris Vasks. His Quartet No. 4 for Kronos is perhaps my favorite piece at the moment. All of his string orchestra music is devine. Chamber work so intimate and yet expansive. He is the master of ... hmm ... pensive, hopeful stargazing?

bazookalucca In reply to evad [2004-01-24 02:59:26 +0000 UTC]

Well. I only have 3 albums by Henryk Gorecki. Here's what I have:

-Symphony #3 Song of Sorrowful Songs
-Miserere
-Kleines Requiem For Eine Polka/Harpsichord Concerto/Good Night

The song of sorrowful songs is just... the most moving - and depressing - symphony I have ever heard. But, it's beauty is what should be noticed about it. It starts off so quiet and low at the beginning that you can barely hear it with any sound system turned up all the way.

Miserere is lots of good mellow Choir music. I recommend getting this. It gets really quiet and some parts and loud at others. This is annoying for sound systems. But I imagine seeing and hearing this in real life would be so much different.

The Kleines/Harpsichord/Good night is ANGRY CLASSICAL MUSIC! It's a very artistic peice. I would recomment at least listening to it. It's not an album for everyone.

His 3rd symphony is what got me hooked on him. I plan on getting more of his stuff... it's just I've been buying so much other music. Anyways that's about all I can tell you.

Sup Zook.
Happy Boxing Day, if Christmas wasn't too overwhelming for you .
My cousins rushed from the States to Taiwan, so I stayed with them for Xmas Eve and Xmas day. It's a very secular holiday here, but still kinda festive.

Yeah... I can really rant now.
I mean, they're great fun to hang around with, but they're also arrogant jerks. It's really tiresome to play their ego games. But hey, for the sake of the holidays, I try to forget it. I try to be happy -- just for one day.

So... Merry Christmas if it's not too late .

PS. Congrats on the acceptance! Where are ya going?

Thanks for the comment on my poem. I don't know, everyone says I'm a really good writer (got 3rd place in a forced competition at our county), but I dislike writing. I enjoy reading, but I've always despised English class and Language Arts. Then again, that poem was very spontaneous of me, since I never write unless it's forced. I can try writing more, but agh, i don't know...

News bores you to apathy!? Oy, you're saying this to a possible journalism major here
But I get what you mean. For the school paper, I try to avoid writing news articles. Straight news is intellectually unstimulating, and it's undertaxing as a form of writing -- it's written for busy, impatient people, so the writer needs to stoop to the greatest common factor.

As for the social/political aspect... I've always illustrated for the school paper, so I guess I'm sorta bringing that into my fine art projects.

Kinda late here, but thanks for the comment bro.
The arrows? I suppose it's primarily to give the composition a touch of geometric design, almost like an advertisement (which is what I intended). I also thought it was reminescent of the stock market... sort of a corpulent CEO's precious opinion... or something .
