Hey, thanks for adding one of mine to your favorites.
Your "Personal Quote" and "Interests" up there on the Information panel made me smile. One of my interests happens to be living somewhere besides Georgia.
Hi, neighbor!

You just made me laugh out loud. Actually by saying that one of my interests happens to be living somewhere besides Florida, I sent a really watered down message. I really INTENSELY want to live somewhere besides Florida. I'm an IL country girl. IL - where you can take a drive for miles on a nice country road and not be bombarded with traffic... Jobs down here are becoming difficult to get; over population, the increasing necessity to learn a second language, all hustle bustle, low wages, high rent, climbing crime... How's Georgia? I thought it would be a little cheaper there, lower rent, but with comparable wages?

I live in the Atlanta area. Atlanta is boom-town; people are coming from all over to work here. Some of the surrounding counties are the fastest growing in the country. With all the construction going on, there's plenty of work for all of us sign-makers (that's what I do; I work in sign-shops.) This has its downsides, too. Billboards all over, the scenery torn up, etc.
I've visited New Mexico on vacation recently, and I was struck by the cultural differences. That's where I'd like to live, in Santa Fe, or Albuquerque.

Not that creative, but I'm well-paid. Where I'm working now, we make "architectural signage." Mostly we make signs for new Industrial Parks, the monument sign in front, the directory pylons, and the way-finding sign systems. We also do some retail work...The big pylon signs in front of shopping centers, the channel neon signs for the individual tenants, and so on.
I spend most of time on the computer, interpreting the intent of architects and commercial designers. I turn their computer files into tangible patterns for our metal fabricators to use, I set up and control different automated sign-making machines, routers and plotters and such. I work out neon patterns and provide altered photography to show future installations in place. I'm kind of the conduit between the white-collar people and the blue-collar people. No one else in the shop is very computer-literate, so I've managed to get myself job security.
Creative? No. I miss the old sign-painting days, before the computers changed everything (I've been making signs for 22 years now.) But this work pays the bills, and allows me to exercise artistic freedom in the oil painting that I do at home. If I depended on portrait commissions and things, my fine art would become commercial art. Making signs allows me to not be a sell-out with my own work.

Hmmm. So if I had a choice in the wide wide world. Somewhere in Italy maybe...
Does working in a sign shop become mudane for you or are you able to exercise a lot of creativity to your enjoyment?
I thought you might like this website... Professional muralists and faux painters hang out there. A link closer to the bottom of the main page says something like "check out the hot topics" and that's where you find all the categories. I like looking through the critiques, interesting what people send in and the feedback they get. [link]
