Hey Philipp!

Yeah, trying to work on my internet presence. I am enrolled this semester for storyboarding for animation which may be the most pumped I've ever been for a class. how bout yourself? Still taking classes?

moooncube In reply to JonPaulzy [2017-02-13 18:12:11 +0000 UTC]

No, I finished the "Foundations Program" last semester, so I'm practicing on my own now with vids from Ctrl+Paint and a lot of still lives. Gotta find some kinda work soonish, then when things are stable financially I'll see if I can afford enrolling for more classes at CGMA.

There are so many that I'd love to take, like Mech&Vehicle Design or Ron Lemen's drapery course.

Are you working on the side or full time studying? If you are, is your job art related or just something to pay the bills while you get better? That's something I've been debating a lot lately.

I have been doing some freelance one the side for a while now. I got lucky and met some film makers in my area (Kentucky) and have been doing a lot of storyboards for them lately. I also do work on the side waiting tables, its fast money and allows me to work part time.

And yes, that mech design class looks awesome! I took Rom Lemens drapery class and it was a lot of work but extremely informative. It really pushed me and would recommend it, especially if you wanna feel stronger with your clothing.

Wow, I stumbled upon you about 5 minutes ago and your pose sketches are so detailed and helpful and amazing! You just found yourself a new watcher <3

moooncube In reply to Yuagin [2016-10-28 21:10:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I'm glad you enjoy those - I love anatomy so they are fun to do.
I can sketch a few more over the upcoming week if it helps, some in-depth repetition would certainly be good for me as well. ^^

But I must say that no other artist's work is replacement for a decent anatomy book, so make sure you don't potentially study mistakes by only looking here on DA.

Yuagin In reply to moooncube [2016-10-28 23:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Really? I despise realistic drawing so it's a whole new world of pain for me xD

And you'd really do that just for me? I've already filled up my reference folder with all your sketches, but I'm sure I can fit in some more <3

Yeah, but it's really hard to find real life examples of a lot of poses, especially mid air ones, especially when the lighting is weird or the model is wearing clothes so you draw it wrong. I literally spent about 5 hours just scouring DA looking for good examples of anatomy and replacing them when I found better ones.

moooncube In reply to Yuagin [2016-10-29 13:42:20 +0000 UTC]

Realistic drawing is the necessary base for all forms of figurative art.
No matter how stylized it is, carrying it out at a high level always requires anatomical knowledge and solid understanding of form.
There's no way around it if you want to improve beyond a certain point.

If you have trouble finding photo reference, you might be looking in the wrong places - there's plenty. Check out Quickposes , Proko and mjranum-stock for a start.

Concerning your search for "good examples" of anatomy here: for a beginner it is impossible to tell what makes up a good anatomical study, since you'd have no idea if it's actually correct or not. I've seen plenty diagrams and tutorials on here that looked very nice and professional, created by popular artists, which were just plain wrong in parts.

Instead go through something like Proko's anatomy series or buy a real anatomy book (definitely no shallow "Anatomy for Mangaka" and the like, those are useless).

Yuagin In reply to moooncube [2016-10-30 09:52:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes, indeed. Though some examples bend beyond the limits of the human body, beyond even the world's most flexible contortionist. The problem I have with photo reference is they either have clothes on which distracts and distorts the line, or the fact that you can't see precisely where their joints art to "lay out" the sketch. I mean, if all the photos were taken nude through x ray it'd be perfect but ya.

Also, If I go hunting for ones without the distortion of clothes, I don't particularly want to look at the male anatomy like some kind of teenage pervert.

moooncube In reply to Yuagin [2016-10-30 11:58:03 +0000 UTC]

All the reference links I mentioned are nude models, I don't see your point.
Studying naked bodies of whatever gender only contains as much sexuality as you project into it.

Yuagin In reply to moooncube [2016-10-30 18:55:57 +0000 UTC]

True true, but I do a lot of my drawing in school, and it would be extremely suspicious if I had nude pictures open in the middle of class, where I use anatomy sketches the most.

That's very kind of you, but I still got a long way ahead of me. Not trying to bullshit anyone there. ^^ Are you living from your art, or are you aiming to? Should be fairly easy to get an illustration gig at your level.

I havent tried making money from art yet, i am mainly focused on getting better and learning different tools at the moment. I think i am at the level where i can find jobs but not the kind that will pay the bills. I don't even have a proper portfolio with consisten good quality work yet.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

moooncube In reply to Cashmatee [2015-09-25 16:01:00 +0000 UTC]

I see, makes sense. Just don't stay there for too long, after all many decent artists are never "good enough" to meet their own expectations. Plus, smaller jobs might lead to bigger ones, and experience with clients is never a bad thing. Curious to see where you'll end up.

If you do i would be really glad. Don't hesitate to ask if you have specific questions. If i know, i'll help and if i don't well then i don't i haha. But be sure to be specific. I get questions like, how do you colour, every other day and i have no idea what i should say.
