Hello!
I know it was some time ago now that you messaged me regarding the hot pixels issue with the E620. Not sure if you've found the solution yet, but I've been doing rather a lot of long exposure work lately and thought I'd share my recipe for getting the sharpest images that I've come across.
First up, don't go any lower than ISO200. ISO200 is the sensors native sensitivity level, at ISO100 and ISO800 it's been shown that you lose around about 1f/stop of dynamic range. 200 and 400 seem to be the safest bets for both dynamic range, and also for minimal amounts of noise in the image.
Seccond, the particular type of noise reduction that gets rid of the hot pixels in long exposures is: Menu -> 'little gear thing ' -> G -> NOISE REDUCT. I set it to either ON or AUTO. That's the one that takes an additional exposure after the shutter has closed to see which pixels give off hot and it then tries to match them up to clean out the hot pixels. It tends to do a pretty decent job
Third: I leave Noise Filter off as it tends to make images a bit 'soft'. I'd rather have image noise and a crisp image than less noise and smeared out high-lights.
Fourth: Image stabilization so-far hasn't proven itself to be too useful unless using telephoto lenses. In this case you also want to use mirror lock up in conjunction with it. Under '*E' in the advanced menu it's under 'Anti Shock'. It's handy because you can leave it turned on and then go to the motor drive setting and flick between the ordinary single shot, and the seccond single shot with the diamond next to it to enable the mirror lock up.
And as a fifth and final note, I've noticed the sharpest apertures for the two kit lenses that come with the E620 are from F8 to F11. Beyond that there really isn't much point, the images just start to get fuzzy at the edges again same as with a bigger aperture.
Not sure if you've already worked all this out for yourself but I thought I'd share what I've learned over the last six months!
