Those books are horrible, I do not say that all books are, there are many wonderful, but the school books really stink ... well in my opinion.

Well, at least the Greek ones do... And having to read them over and over doesn't help! The system wants us to memorize mathematical definitions (without caring, of course, if we even know what it defines), when I can't even remember my ID number. They're destroying maths. Hell! they're destroying science!

In my country is the same, they only care that students memorize and learn mechanically. They are not interested in us analyzing, criticizing, being creative or critical, so they educate to create efficient workers who are happy and conformist.
The truth I never really enjoy a book until I left school, there I found the love to read and to learn.

It's exactly the same here...Nothing practical or intellectually useful. And the worst thing is that even the smallest efforts to make the system better get trampled by ignorant idiots, teacher AND students. Constant understatement and unwillingness to try and do something "out of the book", while the exceptions to that rule get discouraged and mocked by the conformists! It's like intellectual cannibalism.

Here is the same, when I begun the university, I must learn many things for myself, such as analytical ability, work ethic, critical ability and study habits... And of course, there is something that evidences the deficient education system in my country and it is; On the one hand, pedagogy, NOW, is a career that is studied by all those who do not have the wnough "intelligence" to study something else, teacher work is poorly paid and students are poorly motivated, prefer to see reality shows, know the life of the athlete or celebrity of the week, to do something else.

Exactly! There're teachers who are so insufficient of knowledge and they're supposed to teach us history, for example, with books that were written in favour of our country's pride! I'm supposed to go to uni and I still dont know certain things about the world's history. And I wish I had the time to found out myself throughout the year...but oh oh! EXAMS.

Sure that if, when I finished school I realized the great lack of knowledge I had, My teachers were not so bad, but both the books and the education system are very bad.

Hopefully, in a few hours the exam results will announce that I've passed and I can become a university student, so I can finally put that all back and start learning instead of just being schooled. (Sorry for the chatter, I'm a little nervous)

Great, I really think it's a beautiful career, even though I've always been bad in math, I love the quantum physics ... at least I understand it conceptually ... because mathematically it's like an extraterrestrial language for me.

The university I chose provides courses on every field of physics, and I can choose the field of expertise a year before my degree. I'm mostly interested in experimental and applied physics, but I guess I will know better when I start!
The truth is, I love maths and I'm looking forward to learning how to communicate through them. And quantum physics is such a hot field right now. Mathematicians and physicist are combining forces, because the theories that are being proposed are nutcases! It's so exciting that I can be a part of it!

As far as I can tell from my brothers and sister, they're having the best times of the their lives! To tell you the truth, in Greece students can be as relaxed as they want, dependent on their finances. The system allows us to repeat failed tests over and over, which gives us time for entertainment, but usually it gets out of hand when you're too relaxed. It's not random the fact that Greek people are known for their stress-free spirit and their laziness.

Well, that's totally different from what happens in my country, where there are times when you do not even have time to sleep .. typical at the end of the year "the week without sleep".

Having spend the last few months in that enviroment, I have to admit it's ideal. You don't have the wrong kind of pressure to study. Instead, you try to find your own motives. While having a lot of fun, and feeling a little guilty for not studying as much. (Sorry for the reeeeeally late reply)

Yes, the most important thing is that you feel you study for your own growth and knowledge rather than for the qualification, and having fun is an important part of the process including the knowledge socialization process. Personally I have beautiful memories of my stay at the university.

I should add, that I failed 3/5 courses this semester. But, at least, I learnt how sitting around studying nothing feels like...and, yeah, productivity is key to happiness. The best mistake I've ever made!
