Amber "Vantid" Hill is an accomplished artist who specializes in fantasy wildlife illustration. She is self-taught with a strong background in animal painting and anatomy. Amber's interest in the natural world began at an early age and inspired a life of drawing and observation.In addition to art, she enjoys organic gardening and permaculture, cooking, travel, animal training, staring at moss, and dreaming of chickens. She currently resides in beautiful Boulder, Colorado with her dashing husband.

One thing that really catches my eye more than anything else is how all your characters in your paintings are active and moving. This really allows the viewer to feel the movement and rhythm of the painting as well as the mood and emotions of the character in response to their activity. I absolutely adore how you paint fur underwater. If you don't mind me asking, do you happen to have any tips or good resources for underwater fur? See, I'm working on an underwater picture right now, but I'm having a hard time finding good underwater refs. I did a bunch of Google searches for dogs and polar bears swimming underwater, but I didn't find anything that was super helpful. The character has long, curly fur and is seen from the side. Most of the photos I found were from the front and didn't really show how the fur moves on the side of the body.

I just look at dogs underwater! If the fur is curly, try looking for women with long hair under water to see what wavy/curly hair does. For the fur I just take a close look at what I see in photos. I focus on that floaty/separated strand look and imagine how the forces of the water push/pull the textures. I'm sorry if that isn't very helpful, but feel free to ask for specifics or critiques!
