[PERSONALITY]
Carly is a kind and intelligent girl who is always willing to lend a hand to whoever needs the help. Determined to see her dream realized, she’s a hard worker who doesn’t like giving up, regardless of what she’s fighting for. A very positive person, Carly can easily brighten a room with her cheerfulness and energy. She’s a little bit of a prankster, but makes sure her jokes never go too far; she wants her tricks to bring joy, not sadness.
Naturally curious, she enjoys trying new things, never afraid to take a step outside of her comfort zone and always on the lookout for new things to add to her routine. Though she can be overdramatic at times in normal conversation, this aspect helps give an extra flair to her performance; she enjoys being able to ham up a show and keep the audience’s attention, and being a little dramatic definitely helps with that. Always looking for a chance to show off her magic, she’ll use any opportunity she gets to perform a trick or two.
Carly is proud of her skills, magic-related or otherwise, and gets a little bit of a big head when she performs well or is praised. Unfortunately, this pride is a double-edged sword, as when Carly messes up or does something wrong, no matter what she did, she beats herself up over it and keeps trying until she gets it right, to varying degrees of success.
While she isn’t a neat freak, Carly prefers keeping her things clean, even if her room isn’t the most orderly. She takes special care of her top hat, which she’s rarely seen without; the hat and its corresponding wand are very dear to her, and she is very protective of both of them. To help get into the role of a magician, Carly tries her best to dress the part, wearing a cape to match the hat and wand—an accessory she also makes sure to keep immaculate.
She also has a bit of a jealous streak, though she hates admitting she does and tries her best to keep it under wraps. Her temper can also get the better of her, but she isn’t one to explode; though intense, her anger is usually well concealed.
[BACKGROUND]
Having been taken into a foster home at an early age, Carly remembers little of her biological parents. She cannot remember their faces, what they sounded like, or what kind of people they were. She was told by her caretakers that they dropped her off when she was two, and that they promised they would be back for her soon.
She waited for them, hoping she would one day be reunited with her family. Yet as the years passed, it became harder and harder to hold on to that hope. She began to wonder if they really intended to keep that promise, if they even cared for her at all. Once that doubt emerged, it began to fester, and soon she began to fear that no one in the world really cared for her. By the time she was ten years old, Carly had given up hope altogether her parents would return, and she had closed herself off from many of the other kids at the group home. She would even refuse to meet the adults that visited the home hoping to welcome some of the children into their families, convinced that she would only disappoint herself.
It was around this time that a mysterious man arrived at the group home; a magician who was a friend of the owner of the home. It was evident to Carly that he had come there to see the owner, yet he instead began to put on a show for the kids there. Originally she was unimpressed, and chose to ignore him—what good would a few tricks do her? Yet a few hours later, she was surprised to find the magician still performing, and all the kids still watching, faces aglow with wonder. Now curious, Carly decided to watch for a few minutes and see what was so special about his performance.
Though his tricks started off simple, he did them with such flair and presence that they were ten times as impressive. As his performance continued, the tricks grew more and more complex, and Carly was left amazed at how he pulled some of them off. They looked to be impossible, something no person could do, even with real magic, and yet, here he was, doing them! It didn’t take long for the same look of awe to cross her face, and by the time the magician wrapped up his act, she was shocked to discover that he had been performing for another couple hours!
And then, as suddenly as he arrived, he tucked away his wand, gave an elegant bow with a flourish of his hat, and left, saying farewell to the owner on his way out. Carly was left stunned at the day’s events, amazed that someone could do something so impressive yet confused at who he was or why he had decided to perform in the first place. Wanting answers, she asked the owner about him, who informed her that he was an old friend of his that hated seeing people sad; to help cheer them up, he would put on a show for them, and often wouldn’t stop until they were smiling and happy again.
This revelation touched Carly; the man had done all that—he put in so much of his own time and effort—just so she and the kids would be happy. Did someone else really care for her? Was there really someone that wanted her to be happy?
She had to know more. Not just about the man, but also how he did all those tricks; how was he able to perform like that, and get those reactions out of others? She needed to find out. And a few months later, she would get the chance, as the man returned to visit again. While the man was busy talking to the owner, Carly began to sift through his belongings, hoping to find a secret to his skills. Though she was quickly caught before she could find anything, the man simply laughed it off, finding her interest in his magic endearing. When she asked to know why he was so invested in making the kids happy and how he managed to pull off such amazing tricks, the man simply responded that he just liked making people happy, and that she would have to learn how to do them herself—there was no fun in being told the secret. However, he did promise to teach her whenever he came by to visit.
From then on, Carly focused on practicing magic, desiring to learn how to perform like he did. While her skills weren’t great and her presence was terrible, she still kept at it, even performing mock shows for some of the younger kids. Performing for them and watching them smile gave Carly a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment; she enjoyed seeing them smile, and she was happy to know she could help them be happy. The magician would return every few months, and Carly would excitedly await his arrival every time, eager to learn more from him. Occasionally, the two would even perform together, putting on a spectacular show for the kids.
When Carly was twelve, she was finally adopted by a loving couple, the Curielles, and she couldn’t be happier to finally be part of a family. On the day she was set to leave for her new home, the magician came to see her off, giving her his top hat and wand as a parting gift and a promise to “never let her spark die.”
Carly lived a happy life with her new family, but never forgot the magician’s words, or what he did for her and the other kids at the group home. Wanting to cheer people up and make them feel cared for and like they mattered like he did, Carly decided to work to become an amazing magician, so that she could bring the whole world wonder and joy.
It was soon after she turned 18 that she learned about Novis, a famed academy that gave rise to some of the most successful people in the world. The people who graduated from that school went on to become famous and successful in a variety of fields; maybe she could find a path to her dream there? And even if she couldn’t, there was plenty she could learn there that would help her one way or another. Her mind made up and with a little help from her parents, she made plans to apply for Novis Academy.
Determined to see her dream realized, Carly plans to give Novis her all, and rise to the status of world-famous magician when she graduates. She also hopes that she can find a way to better distinguish stage magic from the “special” kind, wanting people to appreciate the former on its own and show that in a world where real magic exists, the kind with tricks and sleight of hand can be just as interesting. Above all else, however, she holds on to the words of the magician, determined to never let her spark die.
[TRIVIA]
Carly has lived her whole life in the Visiva region, spending most of her childhood in a group home in Aigean City. The home was run by a kindly Reuniclus named Martha, whom Carly affectionately refers to as Gran; the two still keep in touch today. Her adoptive parents, an Ursaring named Misty and a Druddigon named Clive, are very close and dear to her, and she loves them as if they were her real parents.
Determined to become a great magician, Carly spends a lot of her time practicing magic tricks and mastering her stage presence. Her skills have improved over the years, but they’re nowhere close to where she wants them; there are still times where she’ll mess up a delivery or forget how to perform a trick. She has a habit of using her actual magical abilities to help with her tricks—a habit she’s determined to break.
There’s nothing Carly likes more than seeing others smile, especially if she can help them get there; bringing people happiness, no matter how, is something she greatly enjoys doing, so she’ll always be willing to lend a hand to those who need it. When she isn’t practicing, Carly enjoys reading and sewing, even if she isn’t the best at the latter.
Carly hates being alone, preferring to be in the company of others. When she isn’t, she’ll usually go seek someone out. She’s somewhat of a gossip, but she’s content with just spending time with her friends. She dislikes seeing others sad or being bullied, and will do her best to stand up and help those in trouble.
A bit of a picky eater, Carly dislikes most sweets, but doesn’t have a problem with candy like chocolate. However, she prefers bitterer flavors. She adores cute things, and has amassed a small collection of stuffed animals, most of which she has taken with her to Novis.
Her room would be very simplistic, if a little messy. She would have a few books on shelves and keep some sewing supplies in her closet, but her desk would be a mess of papers for class, magic, and other miscellaneous topics. Her bed would be disorganized, but you probably won’t be able to tell as it will be buried under a pile of stuffed animals.
Carly enjoys a wide variety of music, but prefers pop music. However, she has a particular distaste for country and hip-hop music. Her theme song would be “Reach for the Stars” by Cash Cash, an upbeat, pop-ish song about following your dreams and living life to the fullest, which reflects both her favored genre and her ambitions and dreams. Her voice actor would be Cristina Valenzuela, specifically in her roles as Shantae from the titular series and Sailor Mars from Sailor Moon. In these roles Valenzuela has a great mix of the attitude, positivity, and dramatics that I imagine Carly having, making her a great fit for the amateur magician.
