[PERSONALITY]

Cheerful and friendly, Persi is the kind of person that can get along with just about anyone. She’s a bit on the playful side as well, finding a bit of amusement in poking fun at or joking around with others.

Having lived for several centuries, Persi has amassed a good deal of knowledge about the world and the people that live in it. Her experience has made her very observant as well; detecting tics and tells or spotting someone in distress is quite a simple matter for her. Not one to turn away someone in need, Persi makes sure all her students—and even the faculty—know her doors are always open if they need to talk; she knows how important it is even to just have someone to talk to, and she’s more than happy to share her wisdom with those who ask for or need it. Her natural kindness and gentleness lead some to describe her as almost being motherly, though she jokes that grandmotherly is more accurate.

Persi seems to carry a very elegant aura, appearing alluring and mysterious to those who don’t know her. Indeed, she tends to be rather coy about her past and her true identity; most accusations of her being a vampire are met with a laugh and a rather noncommittal response. Persi doesn’t see any reason in hiding her identity as a vampire anymore; it’s just a little fun to see people try to figure it out themselves.

For those who do know her, however, they’ll find this air of elegance hides Perci’s more relaxed and carefree demeanor. She’s in fact rather casual, preferring to avoid formalities and simply address others by name. Her relaxed nature unfortunately tends to bleed over other spheres of life; Persi can be somewhat absentminded at times, forgetting her train of thought or even misplacing items. She also has a nasty habit of being lazy, going so far as to postpone assignments or even cut classes short if she’s feeling like it.

When it comes to her research, however, Persi becomes completely single-minded, focused only on finding the solution to her quandary, even to the detriment of her own health. Persi feels guilty for what has happened to her family, and devotes herself to setting things right, no matter the cost. Her long life and the many experiences she’s gone through also weigh heavily on her soul, which leaves her rather melancholic at times, especially when thinking about what might have been…

 [BACKGROUND]

Born to a family of vampires centuries ago, Persi was informed of her heritage early on in her life. The Oxypetalum family had lived in the shadows of the world for millennia, and though they were slaves to their vampiric desires, they refused to be controlled by them, and developed more humane methods of subsistence. To ensure Persi would not fall to temptation, she was trained from an early age to control her urges, learning to never feed on others, instead subsisting on animal blood like the rest of her family. The young vampire was also made aware of her physiology, and the alterations to normal life that came with it. She would be forced to walk the night, never able to see the sun, and her life would be practically eternal; death would not even be a concern for millennia.

To the young and naïve Persi, this seemed like a good thing. Being virtually immortal and eternally youthful meant she would never have to worry about dying or growing old. As long as she was wise about remaining nocturnal and keeping up her blood intake, she could enjoy life for all eternity. To that end, Persi spent the next century indulging in all life had to offer, taking in everything it could give her.

Yet as the years passed, the true cost of living forever became revealed to her. Her life may have been eternal, and the lives of her family might have been eternal, but no one else’s was. Their lives ended all too soon; friends, loved ones, and even lovers passed away in what felt like the blink of an eye, and Persi realized how lonely the life of an immortal truly was. How could you form lasting relationships with the knowledge that one day, you would be left with nothing but sorrow and pain from losing those relationships, cursed to know you would always outlive anyone you cared about?

Disillusioned by the revelation of her existence, Persi became a recluse, hiding away in her manor and closing herself off from the world, too afraid of the pain of loss to even attempt to bond with anyone. Her very existence became a myth; most assumed the manor to be abandoned or haunted. In her loneliness, she turned to occupying her life with various hobbies and activities, discovering she possessed a strong interest in chemistry. It was as she continued to practice the science and grow more familiar with it that she realized that her life was not as bleak as she once thought. She had found a passion she thoroughly enjoyed, one that she had learned much about over the years. It would be a complete waste to keep that knowledge to herself.

With this in mind, Persi left her manor, working to share her research with other researchers in her field and collaborating with them to better understand the world they shared. She was glad to be able to contribute to the field of chemistry, but the wariness in her heart remained, and she continued to keep herself at arm’s reach, knowing full well any relationships she made would be gone before she even realized it.

Yet even despite this, she found herself growing closer to a fellow researcher, a kind and gentle man named Julius. While she initially remained civil and respectful to him, she quickly began to enjoy his company, not even realizing that she was doing exactly what she’d swore she wouldn’t. By the time she had realized what had happened, she couldn’t stop thinking of the man, and she had to accept the truth; he had stolen her heart.

Though she knew it would end one day, the two began a relationship, and Persi found herself falling more in love with Julius by the day. Yet she knew that because of that, she couldn’t keep any secrets from him, especially her biggest one. She was afraid of what the repercussions could be—according to her parents, there were those who were afraid of those like her, and so revealing her identity to anyone could be dangerous. Yet if you could not be truthful to your true love, did you truly love them? Despite the risks, Persi knew she had to tell Julius the truth, and revealed her nature as a vampire. Knowing that the topic would eventually come up, she also informed him that if he so desired, she could make him a vampire as well, granting him eternal youth and eternal life.

However, despite sharing this information, Persi was reluctant to go through with turning her love. She knew the cost of living forever; being forced to live in the shadows, to watch as everyone you loved passed on, and you remained cursed to life for all eternity. If he was turned, all he would have would be her, and while she reluctantly had to admit that she wouldn’t mind spending eternity with him, she knew it would be misery for Julius; her heart ached just thinking about dooming him to that fate, yet she knew she had to tell him.

But Julius didn’t want to be immortal. He could tell how reluctant Persi was to even share the information, and suspected she was just as reluctant to turn him. Not because she didn’t want to deal with him, but because she didn’t want him to suffer like she had for the past several centuries. He knew just from how Persi talked about everything that she would be miserable for making him a vampire. He wanted his love to be happy, and if that meant he wouldn’t spend forever with her, he was fine with that.

The two discussed it a bit more, ultimately coming to the conclusion that Julius would remain a mortal; it seemed the best way for both of them to be happy. Persi knew that the resolution meant that her relationship with Julius would one day end, but she didn’t care; spending time with him—loving him—was worth every second of the pain of losing him. Their bond strengthened, the two soon married and had a child, whom, on Persi’s request, was named Rhodes.

Knowing that Rhodes would inherit her vampirism, Persi and Julius resolved to work with their son when he came of age to control his vampiric desires; inevitably, the curse of his blood would come for him as it had all the other Oxypetalums, and without proper training, he would succumb to his primal bloodlust. Yet mere months after Rhodes was born, Julius was struck with a terrible illness—one that would cost him his life.

Persi did her best to take care of both her infant son and her ailing husband, but she knew there was little she could do for Julius; his sickness was doomed to take his life. However, she knew she could save him; as a vampire, his illness would amount to little more than a cough. It wasn’t what they had agreed upon, but…this way, they could stay a family…this way, he would survive…

Mere inches from sinking her teeth into his neck, Persi realized what she was doing—what she was about to do—and held herself back. This wasn’t what he would have wanted. This wasn’t what she wanted. Moments later, Julius passed on, leaving Persi alone with their child.

Persi worked to raise Rhodes on her own, taking care of him, educating him, and training him to control his vampiric tendencies. As a dhampir, Rhodes was not bound by a weakness to the sun, and was allowed to walk among the diurnal people of the world. However, his thirst for blood had not waned in the slightest; it was only through his mother’s assistance that he found a fitting substitute, following in his family’s footsteps and partaking of animal blood.

Time passed, and Rhodes grew from a boy to a young man, leaving the comfort of his mother’s manor to find his own path in life. Persi devoted her time to her research once again, working to make breakthroughs in the field of chemistry. However, she still kept in touch with her son, who exchanged letters with her over the years informing her of his travels. Before long, Rhodes had found love of his own; a kind and meek woman from a small village named Sonia. The two were soon happily married, and soon after had two daughters: Petra and Ellora. Persi was proud to be a grandmother, and visited the family whenever she could to see her grandchildren. However, she realized the implications of Rhodes having children; they would no doubt bear the same curse of vampirism that he had gained from her. Their vampire blood would be much more diluted compared to Rhodes and Persi’s but the vampiric urges would be no less powerful. Without proper training, they would succumb.

Luckily, it seems Rhodes had also realized this; when the two girls were around five years old, Rhodes contacted Persi about having the entire family stay with her, so that Persi could assist him in helping Petra and Ellora learn to control themselves. Knowing full well the dangers of them succumbing to their bloodlust and glad to have a chance to spend more time with her granddaughters, Persi accepted, and the family moved into her manor a couple weeks later.

Persi also assisted Rhodes and Sonia in taking care of the two girls, insisting on educating them while also pampering them like any good grandmother at every opportunity. She also began to grow closer to her daughter-in-law, Sonia. Rhodes had also told her of the secret behind their family—he had done so before marrying her, like his mother had—and though she was fine with it, Persi noticed she was more wary around her than her husband, presumably because she was a full vampire rather than a dhampir like Rhodes. Thankfully, the two quickly grew close, finding they had much in common.

It was around this time, however, that she began to notice a change in her son. Rhodes seemed more closed off than she remembered him being; more abrasive, less open to conversation. It was as if a switch within him had been flipped. He also disappeared at night for extensive periods of time, long enough that Sonia began to worry that he was having an affair. However, Persi began to hear rumors circulate around Snowbelle that people were going missing at odd hours of the night, and that the few people that were found were mangled practically beyond recognition.

She didn’t like the picture these pieces were adding up to, but her hunch was unfortunately correct. One evening, just as Persi was waking up, a scream rang out through the manor. Downstairs, Rhodes was seconds away from sinking his teeth into Sonia’s neck; Petra and Ellora were a terrified mess huddled in the corner, looking on with shocked horror at their father. For whatever reason, Rhodes had succumbed to his bloodlust, and Persi deduced that he was also the likely culprit for the disappearances and murders around Snowbelle. Her mind in overdrive, she raced to the pair and pulled her son off of Sonia. It was clear Rhodes wasn’t even thinking at this moment; whatever thoughts he had were consumed by his feral thirst for blood.

Stalling him long enough for Sonia to get Petra and Ellora to safety, Persi attempted to subdue her son, hoping she could tire him out or find a way to return him to his senses. But Rhodes seemed too far gone; all he cared about was his next meal, regardless of who it was.

Refusing to let the monster that was her son touch her daughter-in-law or her granddaughters, Persi did whatever she could to hold him off, though her resistance only made him turn his fangs on her instead. Reacting instinctively, Persi struggled against him, using all her strength to push him off. The force of the thrust was more than she’d intended to use, though; Rhodes stumbled back, tripping over and falling over the railing onto the statue below. He was impaled upon its weapon, dying instantly.

Though she knew it was the only way to protect her family, Persi was devastated that she had killed her only son. Once a funeral was held and Sonia had assured her she could take care of Petra and Ellora, she locked herself within her study, thoughts of the centuries of her life swirling through her mind. Petra and Ellora were demi-vampires whether they wanted to or not, and there was no guarantee that they would remain in control of themselves, even with her guidance. It had happened to their father, and she feared it was inevitably going to happen to them. Even if it didn’t, they couldn’t escape the vampire blood that ran through their veins; their lives wouldn’t be immortal like Persi’s, but they would likely outlive a normal human lifespan by several decades, meaning they too would be forced to watch their loved ones die.

Persi hadn’t had a choice in becoming a vampire. Neither had Rhodes, or Petra or Ellora. Vampirism had been forced upon them, and they had no choice but to deal with the consequences. No more. Persi wasn’t going to let her granddaughters suffer like she had. She was going to give them a choice.

There had to be a cure. There had to be a way to free them from the shackles of vampirism. She just had to find it. Going over her research, she theorized that the solution had to lie in her life’s work; chemistry had to hold at least a piece of the answer.

Fueled by the resolve to save her family, Persi devoted herself to finding the so-called “miracle cure” that would break her family’s curse. But no matter how deep she dove, no matter how much she researched, nothing seemed to hold the answer. All that met her was wall after wall and countless reminders that this entire mission was pointless.

She refused to give up. The answer was out there, somewhere. Her continued research led her to discover a region known as Visiva; it was rather archaic in terms of its technological advancement, but what it did possess was a history very rich in magic and the supernatural. Perhaps if science was not the answer, magic would be.

Resolving to continue her research in Visiva, Persi left a large portion of her family fortune to Sonia and her granddaughters, promising that she would return with the solution. As for when she arrived in the region, she decided to take a visit to the region’s famed school, Novis Academy. Persi had always had a fondness for teaching and sharing her work, and the academy was noticeably located in the very center of the region, making it the perfect place to act as her “base of operations.” Luckily, it seemed the academy had an opening for a chemistry teacher, which she was more than happy to fill.

Persi isn’t sure if Visiva holds the answer she is looking for, but she’s determined to do whatever it takes to save her family from their curse. The fear of what could happen to Petra and Ellora haunts her at all times, and her mind is set on making sure that possibility never becomes a reality.

 [TRIVIA]

Persi is from the Kalos region, and has lived her whole life in Snowbelle City. While she knows a bit of Kalosian, she’s taken the time to pick up some other languages as well, and is fluent in Kantonian, Alolan, and Sinnohan. She was born to Bran, a Crobat and a full vampire like her, and Elizabeth, a Noctowl that was turned into a vampire by her father. Though they both passed long ago, she still loves them dearly. In addition, she has two siblings, both older than her: Madurai, her older sister and the middle child, and Bagan, her older brother and the eldest. Unfortunately, she has lost contact with them, and scarcely even knows if they are still alive. Julius, her husband, was a Drampa, while Rhodes was a Golbat like her. Both of her grandchildren, Petra and Ellora, are Zubats, while her daughter-in-law Sonia is a Snover.

Bound to her vampiric physiology, Persi is extremely vulnerable to sunlight; even the stray beam across her arm is enough to cause serious burns. As such, she can only walk free at night, when the sun is replaced by the moon. However, after a little experimentation, she’s discovered that overcast, cloudy days are doable, but only with proper protection.  In line with this, Persi usually only teaches classes at night, sleeping during the day instead. However, if a student needs accommodation, Persi is happy to make adjustments or meet them during the day if needed.

Persi must also maintain a steady routine of drinking blood, as it is the only thing that can truly sustain her. Luckily, however, she has learned to subsist off of animal blood rather than being forced to take it from humans; she’s never liked the idea of sucking blood from people anyway. Thanks to making a little deal with some of the local butchers near Novis to take their leftover animal blood off their hands at the end of the week, she maintains a good supply that she doesn’t have to worry about running out. If she does end up running a bit low on blood intake, however, she tends to get a bit cranky.

Persi has some other abilities in line with typical vampiric powers, such as being able to entrance others with but a gaze, shift into various forms, including a bat and a cloud of fog, and drain the life of others with a mere touch—luckily the last one is something she can turn off, so she doesn’t need to worry about accidentally sucking energy from a friend. Persi also doesn’t possess a reflection, leading many to wonder how she keeps up her appearances so well, and finds that she is required to ask permission to enter any sort of establishment, something she has grown quite weary of over the years.

Persi enjoys teaching her classes, but when she isn’t sharing her love of chemistry with a younger generation, she’s holed up in the labs on campus or her own room, researching and experimenting to reach her goal of finding the cure for vampirism. Sometimes, of course, she’s simply napping in her room instead. An avid reader, Persi also frequents the library quite a bit enjoying the various books the school has to offer. She’s also a bit of a gossip, and always relishes the opportunity to talk with a friend. However, due to her nocturnal lifestyle, Persi finds that there aren’t many people she can spend time with in her most active parts of the night. This does, however, make her appreciate the company of the other night owls a bit more.

The only thing Persi really fears is what might happen to her granddaughters if she fails to find a way to break her family’s curse—or rather, what they might do. She dislikes lazy, disruptive, or disrespectful students, and refuses to put up with any student or person trying to tower over another.

A talented cook, Persi is skilled at making a variety of dishes, but while her favorites are sour-flavored dishes—especially candy—she isn’t too much of a fan of sweet treats. However, she finds cooking fun in general, and doesn’t mind making anything her guests request!

Her Ability, Infiltrator, allows her to bypass certain barriers made by her opponent, and relies on her vampiric abilities. Thanks to her powers, Persi is able to assume a variety of forms, including a bat or a cloud of fog, which make it simple for her to get around an enemy shield.

Persi’s room would be neat and tidy, though every shelf would be stuffed full of antiques, heirlooms, and keepsakes—just a few of the trinkets and precious items she’s amassed over the centuries.

Having practically watched modern music evolve, Persi has a great adoration for all kinds of genres, though her favorite still remains classical. I imagine her theme song would be “Wood Carving Partita” from the gothic adventure game “Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.” The theme, which is played on a harpsichord, has a rather old-fashioned aesthetic to it, while also incorporating a rather sad and mystical tone, which I feel is a great match for Persi’s somewhat tragic background. As for her voice actor, I can see Misty Lee being a great fit for her, especially in her role as Titania from “Fire Emblem Heroes.” Lee brings a rather mature and almost motherly tone to her role as Titania, fitting my image of Persi rather well.
