the snail isnt supposed to be the only focus of it, the main focal point sure, but... not the only thing. the fuse, the gear, the root... all of which were things i wanted to be a big part of this.
also yes, i realize theres not a lot going on in the right side of the picture, but i wanted to keep the snail toward the center, there was junk on the left that had to go (basically this was a carefully constructed mini-scene) and i figured going square was the best option, as i think that metal disk behind the snail balances out the weight of the photo better than any other crop could... but perhaps not. it was a difficult choice, that one.

There's an Opeth song called "Derelict Herds", I thought maybe you used part of the title... but never mind, it's an excelent picture anyway.

nope, never heard of it. derelict is a real word, usually referring to rusty abandoned things.
its proper use applies to shipwrecks i believe, but its used for anything abandoned.

it was quite strange how it happened, it was a cloudy day and i had the shot all set up, and right as i was about to adjust the shutter speed due to it being a little dark, the clouds moved just right so a beam of light hit the snail and put the exposure level right where i wanted it anyway.
quite lucky, that.

Yes very much so, if it was painted it would be like caraveggio or a baroque illuminated painting. I love how they did that back then

Beautiful, I love the soft translucency of the tube and the snail juxtaposed with the roughness of the rust and root. Bravo!

as soon as i put the snail on that, it started to rain, and the clouds moved in such a way so that the sky darkened and a beam of light was right on the snail. yeah, its my picture, but nature did help a bit. so it was a bit of a collaboration, i guess.

That is amazingly epic. The way the light illuminates the snail is really gorgeous. I'm excited that you were able to capture this moment!

it was rather rainy out, and i had the shot lined up, and just as i was about to adjust the shutter speed to brighten it up a little, there was a crack in the clouds and the sun hit right on the snail, but not the background. it really was rather lucky, since it put the exposure right at what i was going to set it to.
