Description Transplant

Pencil and watercolor on watercolor paper, original 40” x 30” Giclée prints 20” x 24”

First I want to apologies about posting work this old (more than 10 years) but this is the most personal drawing I have ever created. Its not technically my best nor conceptually the most interesting but very important in my personal history as an artist. The process also released many demons, which is icing on the cake. The reason for the post is to stress what a great thing it is to really dig into your personal symbolism.

When my parents and I immigrated to the United States. My first morning in this new country as I was looking across the infinite flat land of lower Michigan, and my first pangs of homesickness hit. As I gazed teary eyed at this new landscape I imagined being a plant that was ripped out of a beautiful garden and transplanted in this vast emptiness. As the plant was lowered into this “grave” all colors faded. Instead of the flower leaning towards the sun, it bent towards to its old home and wilted in the process.

Twenty-eight years I produced this work, partly form an early sketch that I made that fateful day. The Geranium represents myself, the heart in the clouds symbolism my old home and the grandmother that was left behind. The planter is made out of barbed wire (it’s hard to see in this small version) this represents not having a choice in the matter, and the rectangular box “grave” is the vacant, lifeless country which was now my new home.

Thanks for looking.

I'm crying looking at this photo!
I have watched it for the first time many years ago, I haven't logged in deviantart since then, this is photo is still etched in my brain.

The most powerful drawing I have ever seen! it tells the exact dilemma of feelings I'm having now, I want to stay where I belong, I fear my next destination!

I like this. Even though I live in Australia, which is a very dry country as you probably know, I could never imagine living anywhere else, away from this native vegetation and the bush and the sea.

Maybe this is not your most interesting concept (when compared to all the others), but the personal meaning is so deep that it grants the image a huge power.

While most of your drawings arise emotions like anger, fatality and bitterness (which is subjective, of course - it's just the kind of person I am), this one is filled with abyssal sadness and the crystal beauty of heartache.

I'm thinking about a lot of things while looking at this, but I won't comment too long, because there's a part of this which has to stay "yours only"... Just a few things though :

- Geranium was a good choice, considering its usual place in people's environment.
- The hint of colour accentuates the withering state.
- An empty square is a very realistic way to represent United States (and not only because your roots were spherical).
- ...ok, enough already.

I really enjoyed that one.

Thank you, love your translation. When you draw from your heart thing happen that are truly special. If I where to draw a drawing on the homeless yes it pisses me off and frightens me but I’ve never been homeless can I do this justice? Yet great actors do this all the time by imaging themselves in that spot so it’s possible but very difficult.

Wow. Awesome.

I understand your concept...I too drew a something similar. I used a tree that was planted ...was young tree(thin and small branches, leaf color, amount of branches...) alone in the field yet was surrounded by older trees about 100 feet away. I immigrated from a place where there wasn't much...all plains some mountains, river a big cliff about 1 mile away... then here in California I was surrounded by apartments no where to go outside...was always indoors. Didn't understand the language... it seemed to me I was alone here or everyone didn't like me.

I drew such a drawing to symbolize this when I was in the second grade...for a contest...which I won. It was like 15 years ago...and don't think I ever got my drawing back

I can always recreate.

Too funny that I choose one of your earlier drawings, as one of my favorites without reading the dialogue.....considering your perfect talent of coarse. It represents to me.............because there is still life shining, the beauty of it shines above all. Sounds like it felt its purpose for being a part of your life ("It felt"-inside you). Your pain has made your talent one, that not many will have. Count your sadness as a blessing, because your work has and will bless many.

Hey, havn't been around in forever ..thought i would stop by and see how you were comming along.

This is a great piece really. If you'd ask me...heartfelt pieces is what makes art art to me...not lines and shapes that are pure design (there are exceptions) but..art to me is a ...healthy release.
...and im rambling.

basically, this is great and i'd love to see more of this type of work from you though obviously this is old and..portraits are your passion? anyway, great work as always i'm loving the concept.
