Description Asinia AEristalta, formerly known as Donkey, has been given a choice. The Emperor Caligula thinks it's funny to make a married couple fight to death in the arena, especially since he's dangled the promise of freedom in front of whoever survives. Both Asinia and Drusus know that if they fake the fight, or try to escape somehow, they'll both be put to death. The only way out is for one of them to kill the other.

When I first began drawing my gladiators, back in '07, I didn't think their story would end this way. But sometimes characters take over the story and dictate the ending themselves; if I tried to alter it, it wouldn't feel right. The sad thing is, it fits--having a husband and wife kill each other would be exactly the kind of thing Caligula would do.

Because this is a special exhibition battle, the costumes are altered a bit. A retarius (Asinia's gladiatorial class) carries a weighted fishing net and a trident, and would have sparse armor and no helmet. But for special occasions, the outfits would be changed somewhat, and so I've given her a more formal-looking crested helmet and a fancier breechcloth. The normal iron armor pieces have been bronzed to reflect the sun and make the combat look more impressive.

This is another experimental piece. I really want to learn to draw action poses better, so I've been working on them. In this case, I took a quick reference sketch out of the DC Universe Encyclopedia and then altered the pose. Learn to walk before you run, ne?

Alea jacta est is Latin. It means "The die is cast"--i.e., that's it, there's no getting out of it. It's one of Julius Caesar's supposed sayings, along with "Veni, vidi, vici" and so forth.

You Gladiators story is really cool! Are there only these pictures or have you written out a complete story?

I whish there were more of it. You didn't post new art for a long time , but I hope you'll make more of it. I'd like to see Drusus in his equipment for this last fight and know how Asinia became Gladiatrix and what she did after winning her freedom, how she raised their son etc. Some more art of Drusus and Asinia in various situations could be nice as well.

Thank you for your interest and comments on all these pics. You sure went on a commenting spree! It's highly appreciated.

Regarding some of the other things you said--yes, my details are inaccurate, and my anatomy is so-so. I'm still learning, and some things like this pic are pretty old.

I do plan to do more with them . . . eventually. Unfortunately, characters come and go in my head, depending on what I'm inspired by or being paid to work on. Right now my focus is on my ancient Egyptian character, whose manuscript is finished and being shopped to a publisher. But Drusus and Asinia are still in the back of my head, and I daresay I'll come back to them.

Very dynamic pose. This could come right from a graphic novel.

*bow* Too kind. I admit I did base it on a sketch referenced from a graphic novel encyclopedia, so there's some truth to that, but most of the posture is my own. Still, some credit has to go to the DC people.

Ooh, cool. Very dynamic. I thought the net was a skeleton at a distance, but that's nothing to do with your drawing skills.

One thing I keep meaning to say is that scar tissue is not normally gray. Looking just at the little nicks on my hands, they're pretty close to my regular skin color, only shiny and with no melanin, so they look white in comparison. That would be especially true on someone with tanned skin.

Yay backgrounds! I should really do those more often. As Hathaway seems to insinuate, they really are sexy when done right. ^_~

2138 In reply to Neshomeh [2009-04-08 04:04:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. And you're right, scar tissue is usually whitish. I started coloring them gray to try and emphasize the fact that they had had them for a long time, but if that's catching the viewer's attention and standing out as an error, I'll need to fix it. Thanks for letting me know!

Oyes, backgrounds . . . an eternal plague of mine. I need to learn to draw the damn things sometime. I cheated a little in this one, though; the Colosseum had a very high wall around the sand, and the actual seats didn't start until several yards off the ground, so all I needed at the gladiator's level was some sand and a big wall.

Neshomeh In reply to 2138 [2009-04-09 02:20:28 +0000 UTC]

Hey, that's not cheating. You're accurately representing what would be there, so it's all good. *g*

I think I tend not to do backgrounds because I can't always find a happy medium between simplistic and a real pain in the butt . (That last one is a really old picture and it's not on dA.) [/self-pluggery]

As for the scars, look at it like this: your overall skills have come a long way from when you needed to do that. {= )

I couldn't see the last picture--it just linked to a Tripod logo. I wanted to seeeee iiit . . .

And once again, thanks for the heads-up. The only scars I have are my cat's scratches, and it's hard to compare those to the massive wounds these characters would have suffered. Needs moar research.

I love it! One of my favorites of yours actually- I don't know why; maybe tis the pose or the look on her face; I'm not sure maybe its the story, and knowing WHY she's fighting, and yet she still looks so determined.. Great job! Who won? o.o

Thank you. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out; and as for the story, well, I'm still first and foremost a writer. Art's sort of a handy way to show the images in my head to other people.

. . . and Asinia won. Her husband Drusus knew that she was pregnant, and took a fall at the height of combat to protect her and let their line continue. Eight months later, she names her son after him, and never kills another man for the rest of her life.

I don't know why it ended the way it did . . . that story began life as action-adventure. Bloody characters. I might post some excerpts here later on.

I like your gladiator I read not long ago that there were female gladiators and was surprised by it (although, I'm not into Roman history anyway)

Still, she's awesome and the colouring is beautiful

2138 In reply to Ace-Thorne [2009-04-07 21:18:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, female gladiators were less known, but they still existed. Sometimes they were considered a novelty act, of course; there do however exist records of real solid professionals.

And thank you! I'm glad you like her. I'd hate to think I was spamming an annoying character onto my watchers.

No, no, she's interesting - there should be more strong female role models around the net (not the maru-sue type)

Interesting story too - who won? o_O

But thanks--I'm always trying to improve.

Asinia won. Her husband knew she was pregnant, even if she hadn't told him outright, and in the end he let her kill him. . . . Sheesh, I'm on a depression kick lately.

. . . that's odd. I don't have a TV, so I don't really get to see commercials here much. We do have a small gecko with a hokey faux-British accent, a group of perpetually offended cavemen, and an incredibly thin woman shilling for a burger chain, though.

It's really awesome to see how far your drawings have come in the last year or so. That's excellent! Especially on the shading and the proportion of your drawing. It's got an excellent fluidity that is really hard to achieve.

How've you been lately? Haven't seen you around in VicFic much. It's tedious having to do all the talking, you know.

Thankyew! Maybe it's not a noble calling, but I really just want to learn to draw characters well. It's good to hear that I'm getting better.

How've I been . . . my health has been kind of tedious, hence my repeated absence from VicFic. It's probably a good thing, though; if I'd attended on those days, smart money says I would've been a disruption rather than any kind of help. I'm coming back to class, though. Is it still in session tomorrow?

Why don't you try character portraits? That's how I kill time. And if it's any help, I'm in the same boat; the editor's got my bloody manuscript, and I won't hear a thing 'til Sunday. Pins and needles time!
