Description OK, this isn't really art ... more of a test involving Poser, DSON & Reality3/LuxRender. I recently watched this YouTube tutorial and was blown away by the tone mapping feature. [link] Lighting can be adjusted while the render is taking place!

awww, she's got a *cute* little snub nose! Great lighting too, I think I'll check that tutorial just to see how it's done.

Thanks much kevin. Yeah, LuxRender uses a non-biased method for rendering which very closely emulates real world lighting situations. As a professional photographer, I'm sure you'll appreciate the tutorial.

Very nice picture. Did it take long? At least, the result is great.

Thanks y-phil. Actually, it didn't take long for this render to initially become passable ... maybe 15 minutes or so with a 6core/16 Gb machine. However, as I had a few things to do elsewhere I just decided to let it run as LuxRender never really stops until you tell it to. After about 2-3 hours I didn't see too much improvement and stopped the process.

The thing I like about LuxRender is the ability to change the light settings while the render is taking place. I think that's awesome.

If you're not familiar with Reality3/LuxRender I'd suggest this video tutorial. [link]

In fact, I'm rather disappointed by Reality3: 11 hours to get this:Β fav.me/d61exuq

Looks like my PC isn't powerful enough (4 cores i870 @ 3Gh)

I think your computer is just fine for the task ... I suspect the problem may have been that, in the "tone mapping" setting, the program may have been left in "Auto Linear" mode. When I did this render, I changed the tone mapping to "Linear" which allows standard camera settings, e.g., f-stop, asa or whatever film speed is named now, shutter speed, etc..

If this isn't clear, 7:53 in the link I suggested explains how it works. Of course you may have already seen that so I apologize if I'm being redundant.

PS I may have not been clear about the computer ... it's six core AMD 3.3 Ghz with 16 Gb of ram.

Don't worry my friend: there's no redundancy. I will try to understand: reading and writing English is not a big problem, but... to listen and to understand this way is an all story....

But I will give it another try, for sure

I've look at that video and the explanations are really interesting, but I think I'm going to give up with Lux: 2 mesh lights, one body without hair, 2 hours and... nothing: just a crappy result with a correct lighting thanks to the video... Never mind.

Octane is a convincing solution, although it costs more:

I've seen some really photorealistic results from Octane. I'm glad you've found a program that you like.

Nice. So what's your opinion of "Reality3"? Is it worth it? I'm still undecided, and actually I think Poser Pro 2012 does a fairly decent job of rendering.

2Loose2Trek In reply to poyeezed [2013-06-28 23:13:05 +0000 UTC]

At first I wasn't too impressed with Reality 3 but then I watched this tutorial about lighting and it all made sense. [link] This image was made by following the procedures in that video and now I can't wait to try it out in other virtual settings which were difficult to properly light in Poser.

And in regard to Preta3D's Reality support, it's among the best I've ever encountered: very fast response time combined with help that is extraordinarily cordial.

As I look through my gallery, the images I'm actually most happy with were rendered in Poser 8 using python scripts that won't work in the later versions of Poser. Sometimes I do the initial setup in Poser 8 using the scripts, save, and then open in Poser Pro 2012.

The bottom line, to me, is that rendering in either Poser or Reality.LuxRender can produce very nice results. It's just that the results are subtly different in flavor.

Very cool. Yea, I need to get the DAZ/Luxus/LuxRender tut myself. I have the plug-in but totally lost in getting the textures converted right.

2Loose2Trek In reply to timnaas [2013-06-27 19:29:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks tim ... I have Reality 2 for Daz Studio as well and, from what I can tell, the operation of the program is almost identical to Reality 3 for Poser. Now if I can just keep DS from losing my content each time I open it. LOL

BTW Preta3D has many excellent tutorials about using Reality on YouTube.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

timnaas In reply to 2Loose2Trek [2013-06-27 19:34:48 +0000 UTC]

Yea, but I don't have the Reality plug-in, I have the new one for DS4.5-4.6 called Luxus, and they work completely differently from each-other. So not sure if it would help.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

2Loose2Trek In reply to timnaas [2013-06-27 20:05:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for apprising me about Luxus (I just now checked it out) ... but I think that once you're rendering in LuxRender (if I'm correct in assuming Luxus is merely a bridge between DS and LuxRender), you would still have the same ability to adjust the tone mapping, i.e., the ability to control lighting. But I'm willing to accept that you mileage may vary. LOL

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

timnaas In reply to 2Loose2Trek [2013-06-27 20:29:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you are correct in that aspect. It's Incorporated in Daz Studio, in other words, instaed of selecting 3Delight you select Luxus. This is the money ticket, changing all the textures over in Luxus for LuxRender to read the textures correctly. At the moment, I am shooting in the dark trying it get it right. And the way LuxRender work, it's hours before you can see what the possible results are. Currently there are no "free" tut and you only get limited info over at the forums at DAZ. It just keep referring you to the Tutorial form the Luxus publisher, which you have to pay for. The read-me's that came with the plug-in is very vague at the least!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

2Loose2Trek In reply to timnaas [2013-06-27 20:42:16 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry to read about the iffy documentation for Luxus. If you check out this video [link] , and ignore the parts regarding Poser and Reality3, about a third of the tutorial covers how to change the light settings while you're performing your render in LuxRender. IMHO it's worth the price of admission.
