Description Took me 3.5 hours over 2 days.
Well, since my laptop screwed up over the weekend, I couldn't do any of the CG stuff I would have wanted to do, so I had to resort to drawing traditional stuff, and since the cat picture I was referencing from for my other sketch was saved on my laptop, I had to draw something else.

So I flipped through the 2 new magazines I bought as reference for my IPT magazine layout and stuff, and found this photo of this African kid in this month's issue of Desktop. I think.... I really liked the expression on (I dunno about the gender of the kid, actually) the face so I decided to draw it.

But whether I have managed to recapture that interesting expression is another matter. What do you think of it? I took a photo of the picture instead of scanning it because our scanner tends to leave out the light parts. ^^

Oh yeah, I actually took WIP photos of this picture, would you like to see them?

I really love the expression. And the shading of the face and the lack of shading anywhere else really makes the face stand out. I like it; great job.

Oh, I didn't realise the lack of shading the background would have an effect like that. It's interesting now that you've pointed it out.

Sometimes the things you don't notice can make the picture even better! 8D

Woah! Realism!

I like the expression A LOT. I think it's a micture of thoughtful, sceptical and disbelief. You can read into the twitch of the lips and the raised eyebrows. Great work.

Yeah, I don't do it much since it takes a long time. But I think I should do it more.

I started to draw this picture because I really liked the expression in the photo too. It's... interesting.

It has a lot of human character, if you see what I mean.

Whoa, this is amazing. You draw so beautifully, it's something you should be really proud of. I absolutely love his expression, and the wonderful detail and effort put in.
I'd have to say my favourite part is the eyes <3
I have a few questions, however; how did you draw the hair and what was the hardest part of the drawing?

3fukutaicho In reply to Knast-Kneam [2009-03-03 09:56:17 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thank you very much.

The way I drew hair was... sort of like this:

I used 6B and did the left side and forehead outline with short curved strokes.
Then I used the 6B and shaded the light areas.
Then I used 8B for the darkest areas.
Then I used 7B for the left side to blend between the 6B and 8B.
Then I used No. 2 paper stud to smudge everything with circular movement, from the light parts out.
When I smudged it so that the light parts are getting too dark, I dab it with my eraser and smudge it out.

Well... hopeful that was understandable. I'm not very good at explaining things.

And the hardest part of it... was actually drawing the hair, I think.
It's the first time I'm drawn hair like that.
But then, I'm quite new to using paper studs and seeing how I smudged almost everything, everything was challenging.
I still have a lot to learn. ^^

You're very welcome

Thank you so much for taking the time to sit down and actually write all that. It was very helpful - lol, you reminded me to use blending pencils.

And for your first time drawing hair like that, it's amazing. I'll add you to my watch list, because i enjoy the other stuff in your gallery, too <3

Any time.
It's actually the first time that someone who isn't my friend in real everyday life has asked me this sort of question. I'm glad that you actually bothered to ask.

And to tell the truth, I only remembered do realism pencil drawings a few weeks ago. I haven't really done it for a while.

Aw, thank you.

this is great. i totally know the feeling of trying to draw a realistic picture. its like the longer you look at it, the more lopsided an eye looks or too small the nose appears. you did really well! great job

It's good to know that you like it. Thank you very much.

You know... when I first saw this deviation... I was like: "Did I watch anyone who drew traditionally?..."
Then, I realised it was you.
Then... it was OMG. O_o.
You have no idea how shocked I am.

But I think it's nice to see you draw (but not CGing) once in a while~ The expression is funny... and your title "Hn?" reminds me of Atobe's "ahn?"... actually... even his/her expression reminds me of Atobe.

Btw, I love the bg.
