Description Process of Elimination VS Danganronpa

*Massive spoilers for Process of Elimination and Danganronpa V3*

Two aspiring teenage detectives from murder mystery visual novels with plots revolving around being trapped in death games.  Both for years were haunted by the guilt of incidents of their past that ironically contradict each other in terms of success (Wato because failed to help catch the person responsible for the death of Saika while Shuichi feels responsible for catching a murderer who he later found out only murdered to get revenge on someone who drove his family to suicide).  During the prologue of their respective games, both awaken and emerge from a locker after having been unconscious for a while, where they find themselves in a location isolated from society (The Morgue being on an island and The Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles being surrounded by a glass cage).  Shortly after coming to their senses, they meet and become part of the cast consisting of people with specialized talents that they’re given a title for (the Detective Alliance being composed of top detectives who specialize in unique methods of solving cases and the cast of V3 being composed of students who are among the best at what they do).  Among the people in their group is a kind hearted but also incredibly skilled female who constantly provides moral support for them (Saika and Kaede) who they quickly develop a close bond with.  Shortly after the start of the death games, both are suspected of being the killers upon the first dead body being found, with said dead body being of arguably the most important member of the group (Senior Detective and Rantaro Amami) but eventually have their names cleared.  While both also initially start out with little confidence in themselves, they slowly become more confident over time, helped even further by the support from their allies around them.  However, eventually the death of Saika and Kaede would occur and mentally destroy them, but it would also act as further motivation to discover who’s behind the murders in the first place.  Towards the late part of their games, both learn the harsh truth that the memories of their past they once had… weren’t quite as they remembered it being.  Despite this though, they refuse to give up, choosing to push forward and end the killings once and for all.  Fun little contrast in their aliases as Wato is called the “Incompetent Detective” while Shuichi is the “Ultimate Detective”

Bonus little connections between their games:

Both follow the same situation of “ally gets murdered, investigate for specific clues, discuss said clues, accuse murderer, prove why it was that person, recap the events that took place” with the murderer each time being a member of their group.  In addition, the murders line up shockingly well:

  • Case 1: Main protag is believed to be the killer, but ultimately the true murderer isn’t revealed until the end of the game

  • Case 2: The nail in the coffin is a part of the murderer’s hand that went missing (Kirumi’s glove fabric and Downtown’s fake nail)

  • Case 3: One of the victims was the member of the group known for fighting (Tenko and Rowdy) with them being killed in the dark via being stabbed to to death

  • Case 4: A bit of stretch, but the cause of death was based around technology (The digital world and Red SPX) with one of the fallen being an incredibly strong yet incredibly kind hearted member of the group (Gonta and Armor) who were manipulated by a psychopathic liar(Kokichi and Renegade)

  • Case 5: While less specific, in this instance the psychopathic member ended up being taken down by the one member of the group who hated them the most (Kaito and Workaholic) leading to their deaths as well

  • Final chapter: The remaining survivors decide to re-examine the first murder case again and come to a proper conclusion that the mastermind behind the killings was the one person who seemed to be the most innocent (Tsumugi and Doleful)
