Come to think of it, a grown-up Nyx would make an excellent Mare-Do-Well, wouldn't she? She can fly, she can use powerful magic (and as an Alicorn, she'll probably have the amazing physical strength of Earth Ponies as well), she's saved countless pony lives, and her cutie mark is all about protecting others.
...not to mention the fact that her coat and mane matches the costume almost perfectly.

I'm trying to understand what the white shape on a blue background behind Nyx's mane is - is it the face-mask of the MDW costume that she's flung back?

The white/blue oval is the eye covering / goggles that are in the face mask. I have some other Mare Do Well images, so you can look at that as well if you're not sure what I mean.

Although, this does make me wonder how she flies with that suit on, it looks kinda stretchy like latex or something. Feathers might have trouble moving in that

I'm not sure if Nightmare Moon (and by extension, Nyx) has feathers. Her wings look more like that of a dragon or bat.
Then again, Fluttershy got her wings into the suit and could fly...

Fair point. I've never worked out exactly what they are either. The overall shape does look like bat / dragon wings when compared to Celestia or Luna.
