personality: Though Mishka looks intimidating on the outside, and though he is built like a shit brick house, this Russian is a big teddy bear on the inside.
He always looks mildly concerned or worried, and he doesn’t remember the last time he smiled, and carries an air of calm seriousness about him. Very soft spoken, Mishka has a bad habit of mumbling and talking under his breath and seems to always be sighing about something.
He’s not overly intelligent and keeps most of his opinions to himself, but being an ex-soldier he is incredibly attentive and diligent when it comes to noticing details.
That being said, he’s not particularly fond of authority anymore, not since his retirement from the military, though he doesn’t go out of his way to cause trouble.
history: Mishka’s life started out very boring. His family owned a small farm where he started working as soon as he could hold a sickle. He grew up largely uneducated in the peasant lifestyle and only learnt to read in his teenage years. With a father in the military, Mishka was sure to follow suite as soon as he was old enough, though being an only child this upset his mother.
Mishka’s father died in the Crimean War in 1855, leaving him a small inheritance which he gave completely to his mother. When Mishka was 17 he joined the Russian military, and went off to his first war, the January Uprising, with hardly any training. Being that it was a short affair, Mishka returned unscathed, but much more mature than his physical years.
Mishka continued serving in the army and was called again in 1877 to the Russio Turkish War. Again, the war only lasted a year, and though Russia was victorious, Mishka had lost a lot. His right, and dominant, arm contracted gangrene and was amputated on the field, and he experienced an attack from a sword to the face, but those were nothing compared to the mental and emotional wounds he received.
Seeing his comrades and his enemies alike being slaughtered around him sent Mishka to a dark place, and by the time he got home to his mother he was a changed man. Mishka spent a year recovering from his injuries, during which he was on heavy medication and developed an opium addiction - whether it was for his physical pain or mental pain was unknown - before being forcibly retired to the military administration where he continued to work unhappily throughout his days, struggling silently with severe PTSD, anxiety, and his addiction.
During his year of recovery, Mishka’s jinn presented itself to him. Rather than feeding off his weaknesses and his shadows, his jinn found a place of familiarity and common ground within Mishka, and was determined to link itself to him so that maybe they could help each other recover from their wounds over time.
The presence of his jinn did make his life better for a while, but when he was found almost dead from an overdose, Mishka was sent to Godsglaow for proper help which his jinn could not physically provide.
other:
✨ Mishka enjoys the peace and quiet.
✨ Loud noises startle and trigger his PTSD and he is prone to panic attacks.
✨ He enjoys reading, and smoking, and making people laugh by telling the odd joke here and there, although his humour is very dry.
✨ Because he lost his dominant arm at the shoulder, Mishka has had to learn how to use his left hand and write with it. His handwriting is awful and he can be very uncoordinated with his hand movements at times.
✨ Mishka tucks his unused sleeve into itself on his garments and lets it hang inside itself, or sometimes he just ties it off into a knot.
✨ Mishra has a very thick accent and doesn’t speak English very well.
