LoL can't argue with that

Personally, I would call both over to my side. To the docter I would ask if he could give me a minute or two, turn to the preacher and say 'be right back' and die. After a few minutes have past the docter would (hopefully) resuscitate me and I would turn to the preacher and say 'Father I have seen the light and now know the true Lord and Master of our world!' and as the preacher leans in to hear my revilation I shall yell 'Hence forth I dedicate my life to speading the logic and wisdom of Foamy the Squirrel so as to save my brothers and sisters from his squirrely wrath!'
Then promptly send the priests reaction to America's funniest home video's and win runner up behind that one cute baby/puppy video everyone finds bloody hilarious.

Relatively certain its a real preacher, just caught at a bad moment in his speech. Definitely scary though.

Taku-chan13 [2012-06-24 02:49:34 +0000 UTC]

Neither. If it's my death bed, I'd prefer to die than to linger ineffectually.
But I suppose a doctor makes more sense.

If so, then I'd never entrust my life with a man who thought radiation was the source of ageing, and that you could grow giant fish simply by placing them in a compressed tank.

TrickyCreature [2012-06-23 22:20:44 +0000 UTC]

There's a word missing. It must be: "Would you rather HAVE a preacher come to save you, or a doctor?" Or:
"Would you rather TRUST a preacher to save you or a doctor?"

But apart from the grammar, it's okay and I like it.

curtsibling [2012-06-23 22:04:48 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, people deserve to have a choice of how they die. If they do not wish to linger, then they could choose to die with dignity. And, if someone wishes to have a clergyman at their deathbed, that is their right. My own country (UK) makes me annoyed in how they force terminally ill people to stay alive due to the quasi-religious law against assisted suicide...I am an atheist to the core, but I think there is a point were law and medical science must step back and let people go. If people wish to find personal solace in their belief, I cannot see what is the problem. No-one else is affected, after all...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AAtheist In reply to curtsibling [2012-06-23 22:19:43 +0000 UTC]

Saying no one else is affected, is a very narrow view, although I certainly agree that it should be their choice as to how they die.

I agree with you absolutely on the ethical situation your alluding to in fact, however I believe the original quote was not intended to be a terminal situation. The unfortunate problem with the idea of allowing people to practice and teach their own faith is that it can lead to situations like this one [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

curtsibling In reply to AAtheist [2012-06-23 22:54:30 +0000 UTC]

I am in agreement with you. And my apologies, I did veer away from the main point a bit.
I think we must recognise the difference between religious "practice" and "teaching", though.
If people keep their belief on a personal level, then I have no problem. But if we have folk
trying to push their "faith medicine" onto others, then that is a breach of a person's rights...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AAtheist In reply to curtsibling [2012-06-23 23:18:36 +0000 UTC]

Very true, unfortunately I think by its very nature, beliefs like this force people to push them on others. If you truly believed your friend was going to hell if they did not believe as you do, wouldn't you do everything you can to save them?

Don't get me wrong, I certainly haven't got anything against people who believe, and I agree if they were all private beliefs it wouldn't make any difference one way or another WHAT they thought was true. There is a massive difference between private and organized religion, and its organized religion I don't like.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

curtsibling In reply to AAtheist [2012-06-23 23:48:53 +0000 UTC]

I am on the same page, organised religion and pushy preachers are indeed the big problem.

If you are afflicted by some serious illness or injury, and your first thought is to ask for a priest and not a doctor, you kind of deserve it. Darwin awards much?

AAtheist In reply to Greatkingrat88 [2012-06-23 21:39:04 +0000 UTC]

No kidding. It would be funny if it wasn't for the people who believe in faith healing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Greatkingrat88 In reply to AAtheist [2012-06-23 21:48:32 +0000 UTC]

It's tragic. Most of these people would seek a doctor, was it not for the way they were taught to rely on faith.
