Description
To continue with the theme of the Helmets of the Gondolindrim, here's Ecthelion of the Fountain, Captain of Gondolin and the Slayer of Gothmog, the Lord of Balrogs. His helmet, the eventual bane of Gothmog, is one of the few that's described in detail by Tolkien. 2B pencil.Related content

Where, exactly, is the helmet described in such detail? I'm only on the second book of HoME at the moment (finishing up Fall of Gondolin) and the helmet is only briefly mentioned as having a spike on top. Is there a more detailed description in a later tome of HoME?

Ecthelion is my fave character in the Sil. and I have always tried to imagine his fateful helmet. I love this visualization! Well done. Very Gondolinesque.

Why it is hidden in scraps!?
I'm searching your gallery, for I've done some Gondolidrim shields yesterday and want to see your ideas on them.

Why is it in scraps? Well, I think Tolkien's description Ecthelion's helm sounds ridiculous.. and even though the purpose of this sketch was to study if I could make it look somehow presentable, it's still quite goofy-looking. It's a quick sketch anyway and not really fit for my actual gallery.
I've actually worked on quite a few shield designs based on heraldry but i haven't published those yet.

You know, I've recently drawn a comic with Eckthelion for a tolkienistic magazine, and my helmet was certainly uglier

I had some trouble visualizing this helmet.. Tolkien describes it as having a spike of steel topped with a diamond.. sounds ridiculous! So i had to draw it and see if i could make it look decent.. keeping in mind that he's supposed to impale Gothmog with that thing, too!

Yeah, i believe his both arms were wounded and Gothmog was just about to finish him off when he jumped at him head first and dragged him into the fountain where they both died.. oops, sorry for spoilers.

I'm glad you like it. True, i haven't seen many pictures of him, but I will certainly be doing an illustration of Ecthelion's final battle with Gothmog some day.
