Description WORK IN PROGRESS: The Lords of Ñoldor - The House of Finwë - Character Portraits
[or Ñoldorin Character Sketches -Redux-]

This is a by-product of my ambitious “Lords of the Ñoldor ” WIP project.. a revised version of my character portrait compilation to serve as a reference sheet for myself (and hopefully a handy way to check who’s who among the Ñoldor for others.. ).

I will keep this in Scraps as a WIP and update it as I complete more characters for the main project. When(/if..) I have completed them all, I’ll finalize it and move it to my main gallery.. (and dump the old sketch to scraps).

As a © note, Finwë’s heraldic design is by Tolkien (as are all characters and names, naturally..), the four house emblems are by me. All drawn by me.

It’s a WIP, so comments and ideas on how to improve the layout etc. are welcome!

Individual character designs can be seen more properly at their respective WIP pages:

Hey, I love the concept, and also the associated portraits.

Just a little question; any particular reason you went with K instead of C? Was it for aesthetic reasons, or was it just for simplicity's sake?

Can you draw Maglor?

Is my favourite elf of the Silmarillion.

Wow, this is beautyfully done.

It's always nice to see someone draw Silmarillion related pictures, but making a 'family tree' with portrets is an excellent idea. And your drawings are very 'elvish' - if you get my meaning.

Nothing to criticize about the portraits themselves, here... just a few things I noticed -

1. Curufin - I don't quite understand why you placed him as last of Feanor's sons. It would be easy to move the Ambarussa to the right and put him between them and Caranthir, no?

2. Galadriel - first of all... I think the Shibboleth states that Nerwende is actually her mother-name. As you stated the father-names first for all others, maybe a small reversal is in order. Similarly, you may want to reverse the order of her epessi - no matter which story regarding her and Celeborn you go by, Alatárielle (the name being Telerin and therefore chronologically first) should be placed first, and the later Sindarin translation of that name second. As the meaning is the same, and both are epessi, I also think that both might look better placed in quotes...

Sorry if that sounded snobbish - it wasn't meant like that... I'm just in an extremely nitpicky mood right now. Sorry. *sheepish grin* I hope the suggestions make sense, at least.

Thanks for the feedback.. the layout is by no means final! If the layout would make it possible, I'd put the whole 2nd generation on same level.. so Curufin's not supposed to be the "last" -- they are just not in a strict order of age, but I've gone for symmetry.. that's why the twins are in the middle. You might also notice that I chose to pair Galadriel with Finrod and Aegnor with Angrod, since it fits better IMO.. that's also not the "right" order according to age. As for Galadriel, I already decided to drop the name Alatárielle altogether, since in "my canon" Celeborn is a Sindarin Elf and thus Galadriel will be the original form. You are right about the the order of the father and mother names, though.. I'll change that in the next update.

You're welcome! I only after reading your comment noticed that you had changed the order of Finarfin's children - I guess I'm more of a fan of the House of Fëanor, so that change was far more glaring (to me) - but the way you explain it makes perfect sense.
Glad I could help at least a little among all the blathering.

Amazing! I can't wait to see the rest of the portraits! I think these portraits have more "life" in them than in the old one: Feanor looks really great in this one. I'm excited to see Maedhros

Thank you! Yes, the first version was just a sketch, and also my drawing skill were more rusty then..

It might take a while before this project gets to Maedhros, since I'm planning to start working on the panel layout and border design once I've drawn all the people in the middle panel.. also I'll be increasingly busy with work and other RL issues during the fall. However, I do have a couple of other drawings featuring Maedhros that I expect to finish soon.

Both these compilations (the previous and this one, yet unfinished) seem to me very Noldorin in spirit . Such portraits could have been drawn... by the Noldor themselves, they are so technically perfect ,full of details and lifelike, conveying the very essence of this Elvish people, their restlessnes, and courage and deep knowledge, as well as the personalities of Finwe's descendants.

But, at the same time, by their very form (rows of portraits in square frames with names written below), these drawings have reminded me of Soviet posters with the portraits of CPSU Politbiuro leaders lined up against red background (I'm old enough to remember them...). I meant no offence, it's just a joke, SORRY!

I'm much grateful for your swift reply to my humble remark ( and also eager to read your comments regarding my amateurish doodles, thank you in advance!).

At the same time,I'd like to explain some points. Maybe I was wrong to use such straigforwardly political terms, BUT MY COMMENT DID NOT REFER TO "ELVISH COMMUNISM", THEIR SOCIAL STRUCTURES OR POLITICS IN ANY WAY! Of course I know that Tolkien's Elvies lived in some ideal feudal kingdoms! I MEANT ONLY THE FORM OF THIS DRAWING (see the details I described in brackets),and tried to express my personal associations (or childhood memories) linked with it.

Perhaps, it is more fitting to call your projects "genealogy trees". They are really looking like family trees with portraits and heraldic shields that may have been executed by some Elvish loremaster...

Don’t worry, I understood that you meant the layout and found the association funny.

The remark about "Elvish utopian communism" was all mine and intended as a joke (although I think it is to a degree appropriate, since they did not use money, shared their possessions fairly freely and even though they had kings and chieftains they were all free and fairly equal, etc etc. ..especially in Aman. Of course, all those high ideals have nothing to do with how communism in reality works -- or rather, doesn’t!)

Genealogy tree is indeed what this is meant to be, although the generations could not be put entirely on one level without messing the layout.. but I might yet end up changing it around completely before it’s done..

Thank you! That's a very thoughtful and flattering comment! You're being too nice..

Anyway, argh! The Noldorin Politburo! Although the Elves did kinda live in an ideal utopian Communist society..! (but since we all know how well that works in real life... errr - and "Ideal Communism" would have no need for leaders or Politburos in the first place.)
