Part 3

In the year 1984, the world was on the edge of chaos. The European continent had been engulfed in another horrifying war, one which seemingly had no end in sight.

About a decade ago, the Union of Sovereign Socialist republics declared war on the Russian free states after a series of border skirmishes escalated into a bloody battle of vengeance. The USSR had been preparing for the possibility of war with it’s neutral brother and had amassed a large army on the border years prior, which was now traversing across the mountainous terrain of the Urals. During the first few years of the war, the Sovereigns were making significant progress over the Urals and into the heart of the motherland. It was clear that the USSR was going to emerge as the victor and unite Russia once and for all.

However, to the world’s surprised the Empire of Europa had launched a surprise attack into the Russian free state in 1976. The divisions on the Russo-Europan border were not prepared for the massive army that would cut through the front lines like butter. Millions of Germans descended on the Russian army, slaughtering nearly all of them mercilessly. Word of this quickly reached Moscow and terrified people all throughout the country and beyond. The Russian government knew that they stood no chance fighting both the USSR and Europa and made the reluctant decision to surrender to the socialist in the east.

Russia had been united under one banner, but no one was celebrating this sudden reunification. The Europan knights had continued their march to Moscow, and they needed to be stopped as soon as possible least they commit the same atrocities against the Russian people as the Nazis before them. Shortly after annexing the RFS, the sovereign government adopted a policy of mandatory conscription and ordered every able man in the country over the age of 18 to take part in the struggle against the Europans. The sovereign army would do everything in their will to defend the homeland, but the situation would only grow more dire by the month. For every 10 divisions they killed, 20 more would take their place.

The amount of Europan soldiers being sent to the frontlines was seemingly endless, and each soldier would pull no punches, refusing to surrender and fighting til’ the last man. As the war dragged on throughout the late 70s, the USSR’s war tactics grew more desperate as they wrestled the Europan army over every inch of land. Stories of the brutality spread across the world and traumatized anyone who dared to read them. Many countries would denounce the actions of the Europan Empire, but none more so than the American Federation. The Federation had had shaky relations with Germany since the end of the second world war and had been preparing for the opportunity to invade the nation for decades. However, when the Nazi empire collapsed most people assumed that the country was no longer a serious threat. No one in America thought that Germany would try to create a new empire after failing two times, but the recent invasion of Russia proved everyone wrong.

With the Europans steamrolling across the motherland, American higherups knew that they had to get involve or else history would repeat itself. The American government would push to form a coalition with the Latin pact, another European faction that consisted of Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France to name a few. Shortly after the formation of this coalition, the Federation decided to pull forces out of Japan. They saw little point in continuing the war and needed more soldiers for the upcoming attack against Europa.

The last American forces would leave Japan in early 1977, leaving the islands to be reconquered by the Japanese liberation front. As one war ended, another would soon begin as in April of 1977 the anti-Europan coalition would formally declare war on the Europan empire. American Soldiers would be sent to France to participate in what would become the deadliest war in human history. Although the Americans and French were better equipped and were initially gaining more progress than the Sovereign army, the events that these soldiers witness still shook them to their core. Dozens of Europan divisions traversed the German countryside like ants. Countless men in grey uniforms surveyed the fields, hunting the enemy like the beasts they were. Every battle ended with an entire army being massacred, and the survivors being systematically executed.

For every area of land the Americans had occupied, several divisions had perished as a result. The American public was horrified at their sons, brothers, and fathers were being killed in such brutal ways by the soulless Europan knights. The Chairmen of the American government, Rupert Hills, promised the people that the war would be over as soon as possible, but the war would only drag on for longer, stretching into the 1980s with no end in sight. Like the first world war, the armies of the anti-Europan coalition were caught in a deadly stalemate with the forces of Europa.
The Western front had grinded to a halt and millions of lives were being lost in exchange for small gains in territory. The American public was starting to grow concerned of the situation unraveling before their very eyes, but Hills still vowed to end the war one way or another, even if it meant sacrificing a quarter of the adult male population.

As the world entered 1984, many began to wonder if the war against Europa would last forever, just like what happened in George Orwell’s famous novel. Of course, no sane person would want the war to last even into the 3rd millennium, but no one could imagine a better alternative. However, Chairmen Hills thought of one solution, one that could cause countless casualties but could also have the potential to save many more.

This solution was codenamed: Operation Last Resort.

No one will ever know what exactly happened on July 15th, 1984. But everyone remembers where they were that day…
